Woodfellas built our name in Yorkhill producing timber windows, and that’s still what we do. We make, refurbish, and install timber windows from our Yorkhill workshop, covering houses and commercial properties throughout Central Scotland.
Every window that leaves our workshop is custom-built from responsibly sourced treated pine or hardwood, and double glazing and improved security are fitted as standard.
Tenements need sash and case, contemporary extensions want casement, and some properties need a full new set. Whatever the property type, we produce ourselves and put them in ourselves. No middlemen.
Wooden windows we make
We build two primary types of timber window, one suited to older properties, one suited to newer ones. Both are available in treated pine or hardwood, and both feature double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Sash windows
The classic Scottish window, and still the go-to.
Slide vertically. Box frame. Weighted cords and pulleys. That’s a sash window. They’re on most of Yorkhill’s period tenements and the only replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.
We restore, repair, and make custom sash windows. Period profiles. Original proportions. Modern thermal and acoustic standards.
A lot of the time, restoring the existing frames, draught-proofing and double glazing, is the smarter option if the frames themselves are still in good shape. We always do a full survey before recommending a replacement.

Hinged windows
Casement windows open outward on hinges, bigger opening for ventilation, easy cleaning from inside. You’ll see them on Yorkhill properties built from the 1920s onwards, and on rear extensions, dormers, and new builds.
We make custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed configurations. Like our sash windows, every casement is custom-built and double glazed as standard.

Timber windows, why they’re the right choice
There’s a reason people have been putting timber windows in properties for centuries, and it’s not just because they always have. Timber genuinely outperforms UPVC and aluminium in a number of areas that count to households.
Natural insulation
Timber conducts heat far less readily than aluminium. Outperforms UPVC at the same frame thicknesses. Better thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before the double glazing even gets involved.
Scotland depends on central heating. A timber frame’s thermal qualities make a real impact to what you spend, and that saving shows up over the years.
Fix, don’t replace
Where damage appears in a timber window, restoration remains a viable choice.
Rot in a sill or bottom rail can be taken out and fresh timber put in. A damaged part of frame can be replaced in section. UPVC isn’t repairable in the same way. When it goes, the entire unit ends up in landfill and you start over.
Over the lifetime of a property, the ability to maintain and repair timber windows rather than replacing them means genuine savings in both cost and waste.
Eco performance
All our timber is sourced from ethically managed forests.
Timber is a natural resource, it holds carbon as it stands and biodegrades cleanly when it’s done. UPVC is plastic made from oil, and aluminium production takes a huge amount of power.
For homeowners for whom the environmental impact of their house is a consideration, timber is the clear option.
The appeal and value of timber windows
Timber windows have a substance, a feel, and a grain that no synthetic alternative can come close to.
On a traditional sandstone tenement, a pale stone villa, or a period Scottish cottage, timber windows look right in a way UPVC just can’t. Worth considering if aesthetics matter to you.
Value, too. On older properties, where period features are part of the appeal, timber windows add real worth that UPVC can’t match.
Timber windows with double glazing
Sash or casement. Every window. Double-glazed sealed units fitted as standard.
The sealed unit is housed within the timber frame, employing two sheets of glass separated by a sealed cavity to limit heat transfer and boost sound insulation.
The timber frame does its bit. The double glazing does its bit. Together they deliver strong thermal and acoustic performance across both styles, sash or casement, same result.
We can also install glazing bars if your property calls for a traditional divided-light look.
Got older timber windows that are still sound but only single glazed? In many cases we can switch them to double glazing as part of a restoration, retaining the existing frames and boosting performance without a full replacement.
It’s a very frequent request on Yorkhill’s older properties, solid existing sash windows, but single glazing that admits cold air and street noise. Easily fixed.
Every sealed unit we put in satisfies the latest building regulations governing thermal performance.

Conservation area timber windows
More than 600 conservation areas throughout Scotland. The chances are yours is one of them.
If your property is in one of these areas, it’s worth understanding that UPVC is not an approved window material. Your local council may require replacements that match the original in material, design, and profile.
Over 20 years making timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings across Scotland, we understand what the council expects.
We can help with consent conditions and build windows that satisfy planning condition while giving you modern performance. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more depth.
Timber types
Two timber types, and that’s what we use across the entire window product range.
Treated pine is the most requested choice. It is pressure-treated to ward off rot and decay, holds a paint finish well, and performs well in Yorkhill’s wet climate.
Want a natural timber look or need extra hardwearing performance? Hardwood is the answer, naturally more resistant to wear, and it accepts stains and oils so well.
Property, exposure level, finish, three things we look at before helping you choose the right timber for each job. Get those right and the rest follows.
Timber windows, your questions answered
What styles of timber windows do you make?
We build sash and case windows and casement windows, both made in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Yorkhill design, sliding vertically within a timber box frame. Casement windows hinge and swing out. We also produce fixed window panels for any window opening configuration.
Are timber windows worth it over UPVC?
Yes, for results, longevity, and looks, timber is the better choice. It insulates better at the same frame width, lasts significantly longer when maintained, and can be restored rather than fully replaced. It’s also the only material permitted for listed buildings and is strongly favoured in conservation areas.
Can existing timber windows be converted to double glazing?
In many cases, yes. If your current timber frames are in sound condition, we can convert the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. That retains the original frames and appearance while lifting thermal and acoustic results.
