Timber Windows Glasgow

Two Decades of Experience & Craftmanship
Bespoke windows and doors – Sash and Case Windows, Bifold Doors, Timber doors & Timber Shop Fronts - Glasgow, Scotland

Woodfellas are Glasgow’s bespoke timber window specialists. We manufacture, restore, and install wooden windows from our workshop in Glasgow, covering homes and commercial properties across Central Scotland.

Every window we produce is made to measure using sustainably sourced treated pine or hardwood timber, with double glazing and enhanced security fitted as standard. Whether you need sash and case windows for a Victorian tenement, casement windows for a modern extension, or a full set of replacement windows for any type of property, we build them in-house and fit them ourselves.

Our Timber Window Range

We manufacture two main types of timber window, each suited to different properties and requirements. Both are available in treated pine or hardwood, and both come with double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash windows

The traditional Glasgow window. Sash windows slide vertically within a box frame using a system of cords and counterbalance weights. They’re the original window type on most of Glasgow’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements, and they’re the required replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.
We restore, repair, and manufacture bespoke sash windows that match original profiles and proportions while delivering modern thermal and acoustic performance. Restoration often includes draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, and it’s the smartest option where the original frames are sound. We carry out full assessments before recommending replacement.

Casement windows

Casement windows are hinged and swing outward to open, giving a wider opening for ventilation and easier cleaning from inside. They’re common on Glasgow properties built from the 1920s onwards, as well as extensions, dormers, and newer builds.
We manufacture bespoke timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed configurations. Like our sash windows, every casement is made to measure and double glazed as standard. See our full timber casement windows page for more detail on styles and options.

Why Timber is the Right Choice for Windows

There’s a reason timber has been the go-to window material for centuries, and it’s not just tradition. Timber genuinely outperforms UPVC and aluminium in several areas that matter to homeowners.

Natural insulation

Timber conducts heat far less readily than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at comparable frame thicknesses. That means better thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before you even factor in the double glazing. In a city like Glasgow where heating bills are a real concern, the insulating properties of a timber frame make a measurable difference.

Repair, don't replace

When a timber window gets damaged, you can repair it. Rot in a sill or bottom rail can be cut out and new timber spliced in. A damaged section of frame can be rebuilt. UPVC can’t be repaired in the same way, so when it fails, the whole unit goes to landfill and you start again. Over the lifetime of a property, the ability to repair and maintain timber windows rather than replacing them saves money and waste.

Sustainability

We source all our timber from sustainably managed forests. Timber is a renewable material that stores carbon throughout its working life and biodegrades naturally at end of life. UPVC is a plastic derived from oil, and aluminium production is energy-intensive. If the environmental footprint of your home matters to you, timber is the clear choice.

Character and value

Timber windows have a weight, depth, and grain that no synthetic material can replicate. On a sandstone tenement, a blonde stone villa, or a traditional Scottish cottage, timber windows look right in a way that UPVC never quite manages. They also add value to a property, particularly period homes where original or sympathetic features are part of the appeal.

Double glazed timber windows

All the windows we manufacture come with double-glazed sealed units fitted as standard, whether sash or casement. The sealed unit sits within the timber frame and uses two panes of glass separated by a cavity to reduce heat transfer and improve sound insulation. Combined with the natural insulating properties of the timber frame, a double-glazed timber window delivers excellent thermal and acoustic performance across both window types. We can also fit glazing bars for properties that need a traditional divided-light appearance.

If you have older timber windows that are still structurally sound but single glazed, we can often upgrade them to double glazing as part of a restoration, keeping the original frames and improving performance without a full replacement. This is a common request on Glasgow’s older tenement properties, where the original sash windows are well-built but the single glazing lets in cold and street noise. Every unit we fit meets current building regulations for thermal performance.

Timber windows for conservation areas

Glasgow has over 20 designated conservation areas, and many of the city’s older properties are Category A, B, or C listed. If your property falls into either category, UPVC is not an acceptable window material, and Glasgow City Council requires replacements that match the original in material, design, and profile.

We’ve been manufacturing timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties across Glasgow for over 20 years, and we understand what the council expects. We can advise on consent requirements and manufacture windows that meet every planning condition while giving you modern performance. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more detail.

Timber Types

We work with two timber types across all our window products.

Treated pine is the most popular choice. It’s pressure-treated to resist rot and decay, takes a painted finish well, and performs reliably in Glasgow’s wet climate. For properties where a natural timber finish is preferred, or where extra durability is needed, we offer hardwood, which is naturally more resistant to wear and takes stains and oils beautifully.

We recommend the right timber for each project based on the property, the exposure, and the finish you want.
