Timber Windows Wishaw

Woodfellas are the timber window team working out of Wishaw. We manufacture, restore, and put in wooden windows from our Wishaw base, working across both residential properties and business properties right across Central Scotland.

Made to measure, sustainably sourced timber, double glazing, improved security. Every window that leaves our workshop is built the same way. No shortcuts.

Sash and case for a tenement? Casements for a modern extension? A complete new set for any property? We make them all ourselves and install ourselves.

Wooden windows we make

We build two main types of timber window, each built for different properties and specifications. Whichever you pick, both are offered in treated pine or hardwood and both include double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Classic sash windows

The traditional Scottish window, and it has never changed.

Slide vertically. Box frame. Cords and counterbalance weights. That’s a sash window. They’re on most of Wishaw’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements and the required replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.

The best sash windows look exactly like the original. We refurbish, fix, and build custom ones mirroring existing profiles and proportions, while giving you modern thermal and acoustic results where it matters.

A lot of the time, restoring the existing frames, draught-proofing and double glazing, is the more sensible option if the frames themselves are still in good shape. We always do a full inspection before recommending a replacement.

Hinged casement windows

Hinged. Swing outward to open. Bigger opening, easier access from inside. Common on Wishaw properties built from the 1920s on, including extensions, dormers, and newer builds.

We make custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed setups. Just like our sash windows, every casement is built to order and double glazed as standard, no exceptions.

Our timber casement windows section has more detail on all available options and choices.

Why choose timber for your windows

Timber windows have been around for generations, and there’s a good reason they’ve stayed the go-to. It’s not just tradition, timber truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that matter to households.

Timber’s natural insulation

The frame matters, not just the glass. Timber carries heat far less quickly than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at the equivalent frame width, giving stronger thermal performance from the frame itself, before the double glazing even comes into it.

Scotland’s not exactly tropical, and heating bills are no joke, so the fact that timber frames insulate better makes a real effect to what you spend.

Repair, don’t replace

Wear sets in. With timber, that’s not the end of the story. You can sort it.

Rot in a sill can be removed and fresh timber spliced in. A damaged section of frame can be rebuilt. UPVC isn’t repairable in the same way. When it goes, the whole unit goes to landfill and you start over.

Over the lifespan of a property, the capacity to repair and maintain timber windows rather than carrying out full replacement represents real savings in both money and material waste.

Environmental credentials

The timber we use is sourced from responsibly managed forests, every piece of it.

Timber locks in carbon and biodegrades naturally, it’s a natural resource. UPVC is plastic made from oil, and aluminium manufacturing is extremely energy-intensive.

If the environmental impact of your home matters to you, timber is clearly the better choice. It’s not complicated.

Beauty and value

Weight. Depth. Grain. No synthetic material can copy it.

On a traditional sandstone tenement, a pale stone villa, or a period Scottish cottage, timber windows belong in a way UPVC never quite manages. Worth noting if the look matter to you.

Timber windows also bring tangible value to a property, particularly period homes where original or sympathetic features are part of the appeal.

Double glazing in timber windows

All windows made by Woodfellas, whether sash or casement, include double-glazed sealed units fitted as standard.

The sealed unit sits within the timber frame, using two panes of glass separated by a cavity to reduce heat transfer and boost sound insulation.

When combined with the natural insulating properties of the timber frame, a double-glazed timber window delivers solid thermal and acoustic results across both sash and casement types.

If your property requires a traditional divided-light look, we can install glazing bars, just let us know.

Got older timber windows that are still solid but only single glazed? In many cases we can switch them to double glazing as part of a restoration, retaining the original frames and boosting performance without a full replacement.

This is a common request on Wishaw’s older properties. The original sash windows are solid, but the single glazing lets in cold air and street noise, and converting to double glazing solves both.

And every unit we put in satisfies the latest building regulations for thermal standards, so no worries there.

Timber windows for conservation areas

There are over 600 conservation areas across Scotland, a significant total.

If your property is in one of these areas, it’s worth understanding that UPVC is not an approved window material. Your local council will often require replacements that mirror the original in material, design, and profile.

Having made timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties throughout Scotland for over 20 years, we have developed a solid understanding of council requirements.

We can walk you through consent requirements and produce windows meeting every planning condition while delivering modern performance. Our sash and case windows page covers the relevant regulations in greater detail.

Wood options

Two timber types. That’s what we stock across all window product range.

Treated pine is the most requested option. It is pressure-treated to prevent rot and decay, accepts a paint finish well, and works reliably in Wishaw’s rain-heavy weather.

For properties where a natural timber finish is wanted, or where added longevity is needed, we offer hardwood, which is inherently more immune to deterioration and takes stains and oils beautifully.

Not sure which timber to go for? We advise on the right timber for each job based on the property, the exposure, and the finish you want.

Wooden windows, frequently asked questions

What types of timber windows do you make?

We produce both sash and case windows and casement windows, made in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case windows are the traditional Wishaw design, operating by moving vertically within a timber box frame. Casement windows are hinged and open outward. We also produce fixed window panels to match any window opening setup.

Are timber windows worth it over UPVC?

Three things: results, longevity, looks. Timber wins on all three. More effective insulation at the equivalent frame width. Considerably longer lifespan when maintained. Repairable, not fully replaced. And it’s the only material permitted for listed buildings, highly favoured in conservation areas too.

Can you replace single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?

Many cases, yes. The existing frames are good, so we switch the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. Original frames stay, look stays, and the thermal and acoustic performance gets better, without a full replacement.
