Timber Windows Westwood

Woodfellas are the timber window specialists based in Westwood. We manufacture, refurbish, and fit wooden windows from our Westwood base, working across both residential properties and business properties right across Central Scotland.

Built to order, responsibly sourced timber, double glazing, enhanced security. Every window we produce is made to the same standard. No shortcuts.

Whether you need sash and case windows for a period tenement, casement windows for a newer extension, or a complete set of new windows for any sort of property, we make them ourselves and put them in ourselves.

What wooden windows we offer

Two types. Two different requirements. We make one for older properties, one for modern ones, but both are offered in treated pine or hardwood, and both come with double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash window types

The traditional Scottish window, and it hasn’t changed.

You know what makes sash windows great? They slide up and down in a box frame using cords and counterbalance weights. They’re the original window on most of Westwood’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements, and the required replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.

We restore, fix, and make custom sash windows. Existing profiles. Original proportions. Modern thermal and acoustic standards.

A lot of the time, renovating the original frames, draught-proofing and double glazing, is the better call if the frames themselves are still sound. We always do a full assessment before recommending a replacement.

Casement windows

The hinged window. Opens outward, lets in a wider flow of air, easy to reach from inside without leaning out. Casement windows became standard on Westwood properties from the 1920s on, including rear extensions, dormers, and newer builds.

We produce custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed configurations, so whatever style you need, we can deliver it. And like our sash windows, every casement is built to your size and double glazed as standard.

Our timber casement windows page covers all listed designs and configurations in complete detail.

Why timber works best for windows

Hundreds of years of timber windows, and they’re not still around out of habit. Timber genuinely outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that matter to households. The record speak for themselves.

Natural thermal insulation

Timber transfers heat far less readily than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at the same frame widths. This gives you stronger thermal performance from the frame itself, before the double glazing is even considered.

In Scotland, heating bills are a real issue. The thermal qualities of a timber frame make a measurable difference to those costs, and it’s worth knowing.

Repair, don’t replace

Where damage appears in a timber window, restoration remains a practical option.

Got rot in a sill or bottom rail? You remove it and splice in new timber. Damaged part of frame? Repair. With UPVC, you can’t do that. When it fails, the entire thing ends up in landfill and you’re starting again.

Over a property’s lifetime: repair and maintain, not replace. Saves money. Reduces material waste.

Sustainability

All timber that we put into our windows is obtained from ethically managed forests.

Timber is a natural resource, it holds carbon as it works and decomposes naturally when it’s done. UPVC is plastic derived from oil, and aluminium production takes a significant amount of energy.

If the carbon footprint of your house matters to you, timber is the clear choice. It’s as straightforward as that.

Character and value

The heft, feel, and natural grain of timber windows is what no man-made material can replicate.

On a sandstone tenement, a pale stone villa, or a traditional Scottish cottage, timber windows produce an visual rightness that UPVC never quite manages.

Value, too. On period homes, where original or sympathetic features are part of what makes them special, timber windows contribute genuine value that UPVC can’t match.

Double glazing timber windows

Every single window we produce, sash or casement, includes double-glazed sealed units included as standard. Always.

Sealed unit in the frame. Two layers of glass. Cavity between them. Reduces heat transfer. Lifts sound insulation.

Combined with the inherent thermal properties of the timber frame, a double-glazed timber window achieves excellent thermal and acoustic results across both sash and casement styles.

We can also fit glazing bars if your property requires a traditional divided-light appearance.

Older frames. Single glazed. Still structurally sound? We can often upgrade to double glazing as part of a restoration. Original frames stay. Performance gets better. No full replacement.

It comes up a lot on Westwood’s older properties, original sash windows that are solid, but the single glazing allows in cold air and road noise like it’s not even there.

Every unit we install satisfies the latest building regulations for thermal performance. That’s guaranteed.

Timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings

Scotland has over 600 designated conservation areas, and if you’re in one affects what you are permitted to do with your windows.

If your property is in one of these areas, you need to know that UPVC is not an permitted window material. Your local council may require replacements that match the original in material, design, and profile.

Over 20 years manufacturing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland. We know what the council expects.

We can guide you through consent requirements and make windows meeting every planning condition while giving you modern performance. Our sash and case windows page covers the relevant regulations in more detail.

Timber types we use

Two timber types. That’s what we work with across the entire window product range.

Treated pine is the most requested choice, and for good reasons. It’s pressure-treated to ward off rot and decay, accepts a painted finish well, and holds up reliably in Westwood’s damp climate.

Want a natural timber finish or need extra durability? Hardwood is the answer, by nature more resistant to damage, and it accepts stains and oils so well.

We help you choose the right timber for each job, based on the property, its exposure level, and the finish you need. Just ask and we’ll guide you.

Common questions about timber windows

What types of timber windows do you make?

We build sash and case windows and casement windows, both made in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Westwood design, moving up and down within a timber box frame. Casement windows hinge and swing outward. We also make fixed window panels for any opening setup.

Are timber windows better than UPVC?

For results, lifespan, and appearance? Yes, timber is the better choice. It insulates better at the equivalent frame thickness, lasts considerably longer when maintained, and can be fixed rather than replaced. It’s also the sole material permitted for listed buildings and is greatly preferred in conservation areas.

Is it possible to replace single glazing in timber windows?

In many cases, yes. If your existing timber frames are in sound condition, we can convert the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. The outcome is improved thermal and acoustic results while preserving the original frames and character.
