West Kilbride has its own timber window experts and we’re called Woodfellas. We build, restore, and put in timber windows from our premises, working across residential properties and commercial properties throughout Central Scotland.
Each window is made to measure using sustainably sourced treated pine or hardwood timber. Double glazing and improved security are included as standard on every window.
Tenements need sash and case, newer extensions want casement, and some properties need a full replacement set. Whatever the job, we build ourselves and install ourselves. No middlemen.
Our range of timber windows
Two types of timber window. Each designed for different properties and specifications. Both made in treated pine or hardwood. Both with double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Sash windows
Scotland’s original window type.
You know what makes sash windows special? They move vertically in a timber box frame using cords and counterbalance weights. They’re the standard window on most of West Kilbride’s period tenements, and the required replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.
The finest sash windows should look exactly like the original. We refurbish, fix, and manufacture custom ones matching original profiles and proportions, while giving you modern thermal and acoustic performance where it matters.
If your existing frames are in good condition, restoration, draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, is often the most sensible route. We carry out full surveys before recommending replacement, so you know exactly where you are.

Outward-opening casement windows
Casement windows swing out on hinges, wider opening for fresh air, easy access from inside. You’ll see them on West Kilbride properties built from the 1920s onwards, and on extensions, dormers, and newer builds.
Side hung, top hung, fixed, three setups, all in custom timber. And like our sash windows, every casement we produce is built to order and double glazed as standard.
All the styles, all the options, it’s on our timber casement windows page.
Timber windows, why they’re the right choice
There’s a reason people have been putting timber windows in homes for hundreds of years, and it’s not just because they always have. Timber actually outperforms UPVC and aluminium in several areas that matter to property owners.
Natural insulation
Did you know timber conducts heat far less readily than aluminium, and it outperforms UPVC at the same frame width? That means better thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before you even factor in the double glazing.
In Scotland, energy costs are a real challenge. The thermal properties of a timber frame make a tangible difference to those costs, and it’s worth knowing.
Repair before replace
Timber window deteriorates? Good news: you can sort it.
Rot in a sill or bottom rail, new timber goes in. Damaged frame section, it gets repaired. The story with UPVC is different: it can’t be repaired, so when it fails, the whole unit goes to landfill and you’re starting from scratch.
Year after year, maintain rather than replace. Over the lifetime of a property, that adds up to real money saved and a lot less material going to landfill.
Sustainability
All timber that we put into our windows is obtained from responsibly managed forest.
Timber is a sustainable material that holds carbon for its entire lifespan and decomposes cleanly at end of life. UPVC is a petroleum-derived plastic, and aluminium production is extremely carbon-heavy.
Your property’s environmental impact matters to you? Then timber is the clear choice. It always has been.
The character and value of timber windows
Pick up a timber window sash and you feel it, heft, depth, grain. No synthetic alternative can copy that.
On a sandstone tenement, a pale stone villa, or a traditional Scottish cottage, timber windows just belong in a way UPVC simply can’t match.
And they add tangible value to a property too, especially period properties where original or sympathetic features are part of what makes them the attraction.
Double glazing in wooden windows
Whether sash or casement, all the windows we make include double-glazed sealed units as standard. It’s always included.
The sealed unit sits inside the timber frame, two sheets of glass with a cavity between them, limiting heat transfer and boosting sound insulation.
Combine the timber frame’s inherent thermal properties with double glazing and you get strong thermal and acoustic results across both window types.
We can also add glazing bars if your property requires a traditional divided-light appearance.
Got older timber windows that are still solid but only single glazed? In many cases we can upgrade them to double glazing as part of a restoration, retaining the original frames and improving thermal performance without a full replacement.
This represents a frequent project on West Kilbride’s older properties, where well-constructed original sash windows are well-built but single glazing lets in cold air and ambient noise.
Every unit we install satisfies current building regulations for thermal performance. Always.

Conservation area timber windows
More than 600 conservation areas across Scotland. The odds are yours is one of them.
In a conservation area? UPVC is not an approved window material, and your local council will likely require replacements that mirror the original in material, design, and profile.
We’ve been manufacturing timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties throughout Scotland for over 20 years. We know what the council expects, so you don’t have to work it out yourself.
We can advise on consent conditions and manufacture windows that satisfy every planning condition while achieving modern thermal standards. Our sash and case windows page covers the relevant regulations in greater detail.
Types of timber we use
Across all our window products, we work with two types of timber.
Most customers choose treated pine. It’s pressure-treated to resist rot and decay, accepts a paint finish really well, and holds up in West Kilbride’s damp conditions with no issue.
Want a natural timber look? Need extra strength? Hardwood. By nature more immune to deterioration. Takes stains and oils really well.
Property, exposure level, finish, three things we consider before helping you choose the right timber for each job. Get those right and the rest follows.
FAQ, timber windows
What kinds of timber windows do you offer?
We make both sash and case windows and casement windows, offered in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case windows are the traditional West Kilbride design, working by moving up and down within a box frame. Casement windows are hinged and open outward. We also make fixed window panels to match any opening configuration.
Are timber windows better than UPVC?
For results, longevity, and appearance? Yes, timber is the better choice. It insulates better at the equivalent frame width, lasts considerably longer when looked after, and can be fixed rather than replaced. It’s also the sole material accepted for listed buildings and is greatly preferred in conservation areas.
Can you replace single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?
In many cases, yes! If your existing frames are in good condition, we can convert to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme, keeping the existing frames and appearance while boosting thermal and acoustic results.
