Woodfellas are Uddingston’s foremost timber window makers, manufacturing, restoring, and fitting wooden windows from a Uddingston base that works across homes and commercial properties throughout Central Scotland.
Built to order, ethically sourced timber, double glazing, enhanced security. Every window we make is made to the same standard. No shortcuts.
Tenements need sash and case, contemporary extensions want casement, and some properties need a complete replacement set. Whatever the job, we make ourselves and install ourselves. No middlemen.
Our wooden window range
Two types. Two different requirements. We make one for older properties, one for modern ones, but both come in treated pine or hardwood, and both come with double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Sash windows
The traditional window design for Scottish properties.
Sash windows work on a pretty clever system: they slide up and down in a box frame using weighted cords and pulleys. You’ll see them on most of Uddingston’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements, and if you’ve got a listed property or conservation area property, they’re the only accepted replacement where sash and case was the original design.
We refurbish, fix, and make custom sash windows that precisely match period profiles and proportions while delivering modern thermal and acoustic performance.
If your existing frames are solid, restoration, draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, is often the best call. We do full inspections before recommending replacement, so you always know where you stand.

Casement windows
Casement windows are hinged and swing outward to open, creating a wider opening for airflow and making cleaning from inside simple. They’re common on Uddingston properties dating from the 1920s onwards, as well as extensions, dormers, and new builds.
Side hung, top hung, fixed, we produce custom timber casement windows in all three configurations. Like our sash windows, every single one is made to measure and fitted with double glazing as standard.

Timber windows, why they’re the best choice
Timber has been the go-to window material for generations. Not just tradition, it genuinely outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that make a difference to homeowners.
Natural thermal insulation
Timber carries heat far less readily than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at equivalent frame widths. This means superior thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before the double glazing is even considered.
Scotland. Cold. Expensive to heat. A timber frame’s thermal properties make a tangible difference.
Timber windows, fix before replace
If a timber window gets damaged, the good news is you can sort it.
Rot in a sill, new timber goes in. Damaged frame part, it gets repaired. The story with UPVC is not the same: no repair option, so when it fails, the whole unit goes to landfill and you’re back at the beginning.
Think about it: over the lifespan of a property, being able to repair and maintain timber windows rather than going for full replacement cuts serious money and reduces a lot of waste.
The sustainable option
All our timber comes from sustainably managed woodland.
Stores carbon as long as it works, then breaks down cleanly. No landfill, no toxic process. UPVC is plastic from oil, and aluminium manufacturing is extremely energy-intensive. The contrast doesn’t need explaining.
For people for whom the environmental footprint of their house is a consideration, timber represents the obvious option.
Character and property value
The heft, feel, and natural grain of timber windows is what no artificial alternative can copy.
Sandstone tenement. Pale stone villa. Period Scottish cottage. Put timber windows in and they fit. Put UPVC in and it’s always slightly wrong, it just can’t that same fit.
Timber windows also contribute genuine value to a property, especially period properties where period-appropriate features are part of the overall appeal.
Double glazed timber windows
Every window we produce, sash or casement, includes double-glazed sealed units fitted. No add-ons required.
The sealed unit is housed within the timber frame, employing two layers of glass separated by a sealed cavity to reduce heat transfer and lift sound insulation.
Timber frame. Double glazing. Combined: solid thermal and acoustic results across both window styles.
Traditional divided-light look? We can add glazing bars, a simple addition that makes a big difference.
If your older timber windows are still in good condition but single glazed, we can in many cases switch them to double glazing as part of a restoration programme. This keeps the original frames and improves thermal performance without a full replacement.
This is a regular project on Uddingston’s older properties. The existing sash windows are well-constructed, but the single glazing lets in cold and ambient noise, and upgrading to double glazing solves both.
Every unit we fit satisfies the latest building regulations for thermal standards. Always.

Conservation area timber windows
Scotland: over 600 officially recognised conservation areas.
Conservation area, and your windows need replacing? UPVC is not an approved material, your local council may require replacements that mirror the original in material, design, and profile. It’s a firm requirement.
Over 20 years manufacturing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings across Scotland, we know exactly what the council requires.
We help with consent requirements. We make windows that tick every planning condition. Modern standards guaranteed. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more detail.
Timber types
Two timber types. That’s it. We stock both for all window range.
The most common option is treated pine. It’s pressure-treated to resist rot and decay, takes a painted finish well, and holds up reliably in Uddingston’s damp conditions.
Want a natural timber look or need extra strength? Hardwood is the answer, inherently more resistant to damage, and it accepts stains and oils beautifully.
Property, exposure level, finish, three things we consider before recommending the right timber for each project. Get those right and the rest follows.
Timber windows FAQ
What kinds of timber windows do you offer?
We make sash and case windows and casement windows, both available in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Uddingston design, sliding vertically within a box frame. Casement windows open out. We also produce fixed window panels for any window opening configuration.
Are timber windows better than UPVC?
On every fronts, performance, lifespan, and appearance, yes, timber is the superior choice. It insulates more effectively at equivalent frame widths, lasts significantly longer when regularly maintained, and can be fixed rather than replaced when damage occurs. Timber is also the sole material permitted for listed buildings and is strongly favoured in conservation areas.
Can you upgrade single glazing to double glazing in existing timber windows?
Most cases, yes. The current frames are sound, so we convert the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. Existing frames remain, appearance stays, and the thermal and acoustic performance gets better, without a full replacement.
