Timber Windows Tullibody

Tullibody has its own timber window experts and we’re called Woodfellas. We make, refurbish, and fit wooden windows from our base, serving residential properties and commercial properties across Central Scotland.

Not a single window leaves our workshop without being made to measure. Ethically sourced treated pine or hardwood, double glazing, and upgraded security, all standard.

Whatever you need, sash and case for a tenement, casement for a modern extension, or a full replacement set for any kind of property, we make them in-house and install ourselves.

Our timber window lineup

We make two primary types of timber window, each suited to different properties and requirements. Whichever you go for, both are offered in treated pine or hardwood and both come with double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash windows

The traditional Scottish window design.

You know what makes sash windows clever? They slide up and down in a timber box frame using cords and counterbalance weights. They’re the standard window on most of Tullibody’s period tenements, and the only accepted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.

We refurbish, repair, and make custom sash windows. Period profiles. Period proportions. Modern thermal and acoustic standards.

Here’s the thing: refurbishing your original frames with draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades is often the smartest move if the frames are still sound. We always do a full inspection before recommending replacement.

Casement windows

The hinged window. Opens outward, lets in more ventilation, easy to clean from inside without leaning out. Casement windows became the norm on Tullibody properties from the 1920s on, including extensions, dormers, and new builds.

Side hung. Top hung. Fixed. We make custom timber casement windows in all three. Every one made to measure. Double glazed as standard.

Our timber casement windows section has more detail on all listed options and choices.

Why timber works best for windows

Timber’s long-standing position as the preferred window material is not just a matter of tradition. It truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in several areas that matter most to property owners.

Timber’s insulating qualities

Timber carries heat far less easily than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at equivalent frame widths. The outcome is stronger thermal efficiency from the frame itself, and that’s before the double glazing factors in.

Scotland’s not exactly warm, and energy costs are no joke, so the fact that timber frames keep heat in better makes a tangible difference to what you spend.

Repair, don’t replace

Things get damaged. With timber, that’s not the end of the story. You can sort it.

Rot in a sill or bottom rail can be cut out and new timber spliced in its stead. A damaged portion of frame can be rebuilt. UPVC offers no such option: when it fails, the whole unit goes to landfill and everything starts again.

Over the life of a property, being able to maintain and repair timber windows rather than having to replace them cuts real money and cuts down on waste.

Sustainability

Every bit of timber we use is procured from sustainably managed woodland.

Timber is a renewable material that stores carbon for its entire life and breaks down cleanly at end of life. UPVC is a plastic derived from oil, and aluminium manufacturing is extremely energy-intensive, worth knowing if the environment is important to you.

Your property’s carbon impact is important? Then timber is the clear choice. It always has been.

Character and value

The substance, feel, and natural grain of timber windows is something no man-made alternative can match.

On a traditional sandstone tenement, a light stone villa, or a period Scottish cottage, timber windows belong in a way UPVC never quite manages. Worth considering if the look count to you.

And they contribute tangible value to a property too, especially period homes where period features are part of the appeal.

Double glazing in timber windows

Every window we manufacture, sash or casement, includes double-glazed sealed units included as standard. Always.

The sealed unit fits inside the timber frame: it’s two sheets of glass with a sealed cavity between them, which cuts down on heat transfer and lifts sound insulation.

Combine the timber frame’s inherent thermal qualities with double glazing and you get excellent thermal and acoustic performance across both window types.

We can also install glazing bars if your property calls for a traditional divided-light look.

Where older timber windows are structurally sound but single glazed, we can often upgrade them to double glazing as part of a restoration programme, preserving the original frames and improving thermal performance without needing a full replacement.

This is a common job on Tullibody’s older properties, where well-built existing sash windows are solid but single glazing allows in cold and street noise.

And every unit we install satisfies current building regulations for thermal performance, so no worries there.

Timber windows in listed buildings and conservation areas

There are over 600 conservation areas across Scotland, a significant total.

If your property is in one of these areas, UPVC is not an acceptable window material, and your local council might well insist on replacements that match the original in material, design, and profile.

Having made timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties throughout Scotland for over 20 years, we have a thorough understanding of what the council expects.

Consent conditions, planning conditions, modern standards, we cover all of it. And our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more depth for anyone who wants to know more.

Types of timber we use

We use two timber types across all window product range, here’s what you need to know about each.

The most requested option is treated pine. It’s pressure-treated to prevent rot and decay, accepts a painted finish well, and performs well in Tullibody’s damp climate.

If a natural timber look is desired, or if extra durability is required, hardwood is the option. It’s naturally more resistant to wear and takes stains and oils very well.

We advise on the best timber for each project, taking into account the property age, its exposure level, and the wanted finish.

Timber windows, your questions answered

What timber windows do you make?

Sash and case is the traditional Tullibody window, sliding vertically in a box frame, that’s one type. Casement windows are hinged and open out, that’s the other. Both are available in treated pine or hardwood. And we make fixed window panels too, for any opening setup.

Timber or UPVC, which is the better window?

For performance, lifespan, and looks? Yes, timber is the better choice. It insulates more effectively at the equivalent frame width, lasts considerably longer when maintained, and can be fixed rather than fully replaced. It’s also the sole material accepted for listed buildings and is strongly preferred in conservation areas.

Replacing single glazing to double glazing in timber windows, is it possible?

Most cases, yes. The current frames are sound, so we switch the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. Original frames stay, appearance stays, and the thermal and acoustic results gets better, without a full replacement.
