Timber Windows Troon

Woodfellas are the timber window team working out of Troon. We build, refurbish, and fit wooden windows from our Troon premises, serving both residential properties and business properties throughout Central Scotland.

Every window we build is built to order from sustainably sourced treated pine or hardwood timber, with double glazing and upgraded security installed as standard.

Tenements need sash and case, contemporary extensions want casement, and some properties need a full new set. Whatever the job, we build in-house and install ourselves. No middlemen.

What timber windows we make

We produce two primary types of timber window, each suited to different properties and specifications. Both are made in treated pine or hardwood, and both feature double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash and case windows

Scotland’s original window style.

Sash windows operate by sliding up and down within a timber box frame, via a system of cords and counterbalance weights. They represent the standard window type on most of Troon’s period tenements, and they’re the required replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.

Whether your sash windows need renovating, repairing, or replacing altogether, we produce custom ones that replicate the original profiles and proportions, while still achieving modern thermal and acoustic standards.

The original frames are in good shape, so why replace them? Restoration, draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, is usually the better call. We complete full inspections first, before we recommend going further.

Casement windows

Casement windows open out on hinges, bigger opening for fresh air, easy cleaning from inside. You’ll find them across Troon properties built from the 1920s onwards, and on extensions, dormers, and newer builds.

We build custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed setups, so whatever setup you need, we can deliver it. And like our sash windows, every casement is made to measure and fitted with double glazing as standard.

Why timber is the right choice for windows

Hundreds of years of timber windows, and they’re not still around out of habit. Timber actually outperforms UPVC and aluminium in several areas that count to homeowners. The numbers say it all.

Natural insulation

Here’s something that catches out people: timber actually conducts heat far less readily than aluminium, and it outperforms UPVC at the equivalent frame thickness. That means the frame itself is already doing better thermal work before you even add the double glazing.

Scotland. Cold. Costly to heat. A timber frame’s thermal properties make a real difference.

Fix, don’t replace

If a timber window deteriorates, the good news is you can sort it.

Got rot in a sill or bottom rail? You cut it out and put in fresh timber. Damaged section of frame? Rebuild. With UPVC, you don’t have that option. When it goes, the whole thing goes to landfill and you’re starting over.

Over the working life of a property, the capacity to look after timber windows rather than replacing them means significant savings in both money and material waste.

Sustainability

The timber we select is procured from sustainably managed forests, every piece of it.

Locks in carbon as long as it stands, then biodegrades naturally. No landfill, no toxic process. UPVC is plastic from oil, and aluminium production is extremely carbon-heavy. The contrast is clear.

If the environmental side matters to you the carbon footprint of your home, timber is the clear choice.

Character and value

Weight. Depth. Grain. No artificial material can replicate it.

Traditional sandstone tenement. Light stone villa. Period Scottish cottage. Timber windows fit. UPVC never quite manages.

Timber windows also contribute real value to a property, particularly older properties where period features are part of the appeal.

Timber windows with double glazing

Sash or casement. Every window. Double-glazed sealed units installed as standard.

Two layers of glass. A cavity between them. The sealed unit fits inside the timber frame and manages the rest, limiting heat transfer, lifting sound insulation.

Combine the timber frame’s natural thermal properties with double glazing and you get solid thermal and acoustic results across both window types.

Traditional divided-light appearance? We can fit glazing bars, a simple addition that makes a big visual difference.

Still sound but single glazed? We can often upgrade to double glazing as part of a restoration programme, preserving the existing frames, improving thermal performance, and skipping a full replacement.

Common on Troon’s older properties. Existing sash windows: well-constructed. Single glazing: admits cold air and ambient noise.

Every unit we install complies with the latest building regulations for thermal performance. Always.

Timber windows for conservation areas

Scotland has over 600 officially recognised conservation areas, and if you’re in one changes what you are permitted to do with your windows.

If your property is in one of these areas, it’s worth understanding that UPVC is not an acceptable window material. Your local council will likely require replacements that mirror the original in material, design, and profile.

Over 20 years making timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland. We know what the council requires.

We can help with consent requirements and make windows that satisfy planning condition while giving you modern standards. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more depth.

Types of timber we work with

Two timber types. That’s it. We use both for all window range.

Treated pine is what most customers choose, pressure-treated to resist rot and decay, holds a paint finish well, and holds up in Troon’s wet climate without a problem.

A natural timber finish, extra durability, hardwood answers both. Naturally more resistant to wear, and it takes stains and oils beautifully.

Not sure which timber to choose? We recommend the right timber for each project based on the property, the exposure level, and the finish you have in mind.

FAQ, timber windows

What timber windows do you make?

We produce two main types: sash and case windows and casement windows, both made in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Troon style, sliding up and down within a timber box frame. Casement windows are hinged and swing outward. We also make fixed window panels to match any opening configuration.

Timber or UPVC, which is the better window?

Three things: results, lifespan, looks. Timber wins on all three. More effective insulation at the equivalent frame width. A lot longer lifespan when looked after. Repairable, not fully replaced. And it’s the sole material accepted for listed buildings, greatly preferred in conservation areas too.

Can you replace single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?

In many cases, yes! If your existing frames are in sound condition, we can upgrade to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme, preserving the original frames and look while boosting thermal and acoustic performance.
