Swinton has its own timber window specialists and we’re called Woodfellas. We produce, renovate, and fit timber windows from our base, serving residential properties and business properties across Central Scotland.
Not a single window we make without being built to order. Responsibly sourced treated pine or hardwood, double glazing, and improved security, all standard.
Tenements need sash and case, contemporary extensions want casement, and some properties need a full new set. Whatever the job, we build in-house and put them in ourselves. No middlemen.
Our wooden window range
Two primary types of timber window, each built for different properties and needs. Both available in treated pine or hardwood, and both include double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Sash windows
The traditional window type for Scottish properties.
Sash windows operate by sliding vertically within a timber box frame, using a system of weighted cords and pulleys. They are the standard window type on most of Swinton’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements, and they’re the only accepted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.
We restore, fix, and build custom sash windows. Original profiles. Existing proportions. Modern thermal and acoustic standards.
Restoration typically includes draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, and it’s the most sensible option where the existing frames are in good condition. We complete full assessments before recommending any replacement.

Casement window types
Hinged. Open out to open. Larger opening, easier access from inside. Typical on Swinton properties built from the 1920s on, including rear extensions, dormers, and newer builds.
Side hung, top hung, fixed, we manufacture custom timber casement windows in all three configurations. Like our sash windows, every single one is custom-built and fitted with double glazing as standard.
For more on styles and configurations, our timber casement windows section has all the detail you need.
Wood windows, why they’re the best choice
Timber windows have been around for centuries, and there’s a reason they’ve stayed the first choice. It’s not just tradition, timber genuinely outperforms UPVC and aluminium in several areas that matter to homeowners.
Timber’s natural insulation
Timber conducts heat far less readily than aluminium. Outperforms UPVC at the same frame thicknesses. Superior thermal performance from the frame itself, before the double glazing even comes into it.
In Scotland, where heating bills are a real challenge, the insulating characteristics of a timber frame make a genuine difference, and that matters over time.
Repair before replace
Damage happens. With timber, that’s not the end of the story. You can repair it.
Rot in a sill? Take it out and splice in new timber. Damaged part of frame? Replace in section. UPVC can’t do any of that. When it fails, the whole unit goes to landfill and you’re starting from scratch.
Over the life of a property, being able to look after timber windows rather than replacing them cuts real money and reduces waste.
The sustainable choice
Every length of timber we select is sourced from responsibly managed woodland, that’s how it works.
Timber is a renewable material that holds carbon for its entire life and decomposes cleanly at end of life. UPVC is a plastic made from oil, and aluminium manufacturing is extremely carbon-heavy, worth knowing if the environment matters to you.
If the carbon impact of your house is important to you, timber is obviously the right choice. It’s straightforward.
Character and appeal
The heft, feel, and grain of timber windows is what no synthetic alternative can match.
Sandstone tenement. Pale stone villa. Traditional Scottish cottage. Put timber windows in and they look right. Put UPVC in and it’s always slightly off, it just can’t that same fit.
Timber windows also contribute measurable value to a property, particularly older properties where original or sympathetic features constitute part of the property’s appeal.
Double-glazed timber windows
Whether sash or casement, all the windows we manufacture include double-glazed sealed units as standard. It’s always installed.
The sealed unit sits inside the timber frame: it’s two panes of glass with a sealed cavity between them, which limits heat transfer and lifts sound insulation.
Timber frame. Double glazing. Combined: strong thermal and acoustic performance across both window styles.
Need a traditional divided-light appearance? We fit glazing bars.
Older frames. Single glazing only. Still in good shape? We can often upgrade to double glazing as part of a restoration programme. Original frames stay. Performance gets better. No full replacement.
It’s a very frequent request on Swinton’s older properties, solid existing sash windows, but single glazing that allows in cold and ambient noise. Readily fixed.
And every unit we put in meets the latest building regulations for thermal standards, so you’re covered.

Listed buildings timber windows
Scotland: more than 600 recognised conservation areas.
Conservation area, and your windows need attention? UPVC is not an permitted material, your local council will often require replacements that replicate the original in material, design, and profile. It’s a strict requirement.
Twenty years of making timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings across Scotland. The council expectations? We’ve seen them all. We know what’s required.
We can help with consent conditions and produce windows that meet planning condition while giving you modern performance. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more depth.
Timber types we use
Two timber types, and that’s what we use across the entire window range.
Treated pine is what most customers choose, pressure-treated to prevent rot and decay, takes a painted finish well, and handles Swinton’s damp conditions with no a problem.
A natural timber finish, extra durability, hardwood answers both. By nature more wear-resistant, and it accepts stains and oils beautifully.
We advise on the right timber for each project, taking into account the property age, its exposure, and the required finish.
FAQ, timber windows
What types of timber windows do you make?
We produce sash and case windows and casement windows, both made in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Swinton design, sliding vertically within a timber box frame. Casement windows open out. We also produce fixed window panels for any opening configuration.
Are timber windows better than UPVC?
For performance, lifespan, and looks? Yes, timber wins. It insulates better at the equivalent frame width, lasts considerably longer when maintained, and can be repaired not replaced. It’s also the only material permitted for listed buildings and strongly preferred in conservation areas.
Can you replace single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?
In most cases, yes! If your existing frames are in solid condition, we can convert to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme, preserving the original frames and character while boosting thermal and acoustic performance.
