Timber Windows Summertown

Summertown has its own timber window specialists and we’re called Woodfellas. We produce, renovate, and fit wooden windows from our base, covering residential properties and commercial properties across Central Scotland.

Every window we make is custom-built from sustainably sourced treated pine or hardwood timber, with double glazing and improved security included as standard.

Sash and case for a tenement? Casements for a new extension? A full new set for any property? We make them all in-house and put them in ourselves.

Wooden windows we make

We make two primary types of timber window, each designed for different properties and needs. Both are made in treated pine or hardwood, and both feature double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash windows

The classic Scottish window, and still the best.

Sash windows work on a simple but clever system: they move vertically in a box frame using cords and counterbalance weights. You’ll see them on most of Summertown’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements, and if you’ve got a listed building or conservation area property, they’re the only permitted replacement where sash and case was the existing design.

Whether your sash windows need refurbishing, sorting, or replacing altogether, we produce custom ones that mirror the existing profiles and proportions, while still giving you modern thermal and acoustic performance.

Restoration typically means draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades. Most sensible option where existing frames are solid. We survey everything before recommending any replacement.

Standard casement windows

Casement windows swing out on hinges, giving a bigger opening for fresh air and making window cleaning straightforward from inside. They’re the common option on Summertown properties built from the 1920s onwards, as well as rear extensions, dormers, and newer builds.

We manufacture custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed styles. Like our sash windows, every casement is custom-built and double glazed as standard.

Our timber casement windows page has more information on all available options and options.

Why choose timber for your windows

There’s a reason people have been installing timber windows in homes for hundreds of years, and it’s not just because they always have. Timber actually outperforms UPVC and aluminium in several areas that count to homeowners.

Natural insulation

Here’s something that surprises people: timber actually conducts heat far less easily than aluminium, and it outperforms UPVC at the same frame width. That means the frame itself is already doing more thermal work before you even add the double glazing.

Scotland runs on central heating. A timber frame’s thermal properties make a measurable difference to what you spend, and that difference shows up over time.

Repair before replace

If a timber window is damaged, the good news is you can fix it.

Rot in a sill, new timber goes in. Damaged frame section, it gets repaired. The story with UPVC is different: it can’t be repaired, so when it fails, the entire unit ends up in landfill and you’re back at the beginning.

Year after year, maintain rather than start over. Over the life of a property, that adds up to real money saved and a lot less waste going to landfill.

Sustainability

All our timber is sourced from sustainably managed forests.

Timber is a renewable material that stores carbon during its lifespan and breaks down naturally at end of life. UPVC is a plastic made from oil, and aluminium manufacturing is highly energy-intensive, worth knowing if the environment matters to you.

Concerned about your home’s carbon footprint? Timber. Clear option.

Beauty and appeal

Timber windows have a heft, a depth, and a natural grain that no man-made material can match.

On a traditional sandstone tenement, a pale stone villa, or a traditional Scottish cottage, timber windows just belong in a way UPVC never quite manages.

Timber windows also add genuine value to a property, particularly period homes where period features are what attracts buyers.

Double glazing in timber windows

Every window we manufacture, sash or casement, includes double-glazed sealed units included as standard. Always.

The sealed unit is housed inside the timber frame, two sheets of glass with a sealed cavity between them, reducing heat transfer and lifting sound insulation.

The timber frame’s inherent insulating qualities combined with the double-glazed sealed unit give you solid thermal and acoustic results across both window styles. That’s what you get as standard.

We can also install glazing bars if your property requires a traditional divided-light appearance.

Older frames. Single glazed. Still in good shape? We can in many cases switch to double glazing as part of a restoration programme. Existing frames are preserved. Performance improves. No full replacement.

This is a regular project on Summertown’s older properties. The original sash windows are well-constructed, but the single glazing allows in cold air and road noise, and converting to double glazing addresses both.

Building regulations for thermal standards? Every unit we fit meets them. No exceptions.

Timber windows for conservation areas

Scotland: more than 600 designated conservation areas.

If your property is in one of these areas, it’s worth understanding that UPVC is not an permitted window material. Your local council will often require replacements that mirror the original in material, design, and profile.

Twenty years of making timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland. The council requirements? We’ve been through all of it. We understand what’s expected.

We walk you through consent requirements. We produce windows that meet planning condition. Modern standards included. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more detail.

Our timber types

Two timber types, and that’s what we work with across all window range.

Treated pine: most popular option. Pressure-treated against rot and decay. Holds a painted finish well. Works reliably in Summertown’s damp weather.

For properties where a natural timber look is wanted, or where additional strength is needed, we offer hardwood, which is naturally more resistant to deterioration and accepts stains and oils beautifully.

We’ll recommend which timber is best for your job based on the property, the exposure, and what finish you’re after.

Timber windows FAQ

What types of timber windows do you produce?

Sash and case is the traditional Summertown window, moving up and down in a timber box frame, that’s one type. Casement windows are hinged and swing outward, that’s the other. Both are offered in treated pine or hardwood. And we make fixed window panels too, for any window opening setup.

Is timber a better choice than UPVC?

On results, lifespan, and appearance: yes. Timber insulates better at the same frame width, lasts significantly longer when looked after, and can be fixed rather than replaced when damage happens. It’s also the sole material permitted for listed buildings and is greatly preferred in conservation areas.

Can existing timber windows be upgraded to double glazing?

In a significant number of cases, yes. Where existing timber frames are in good condition, we can upgrade the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. This retains the existing frames and look while improving thermal and acoustic standards.
