Timber Windows Strathaven

Woodfellas are the timber window team based in Strathaven. We build, restore, and put in timber windows from our Strathaven workshop, covering both houses and business properties across Central Scotland.

Every window that we make is built to your exact size from responsibly sourced treated pine or hardwood, and double glazing and improved security come as standard.

Tenement, extension, any property. Sash and case, casement, or a full replacement set: we make in-house and install ourselves.

Our range of timber windows

Two main types of timber window, each right for different properties and needs. Both available in treated pine or hardwood, and both include double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash windows

Scotland’s traditional window style.

Before UPVC, before aluminium, Strathaven’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements were fitted with sash windows, moving up and down in a timber box frame on weighted cords and pulleys. They’re still the only permitted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.

We refurbish, fix, and build custom sash windows. Existing profiles. Original proportions. Modern thermal and acoustic results.

The existing frames are sound, so why replace them? Restoration, draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, is often the most sensible option. We do full surveys first, before we ever recommend replacement.

Casement windows

Casement windows open out on hinges, creating a larger opening for ventilation and making cleaning easier from inside. They’re the common option on Strathaven properties going back from the 1920s onwards, as well as rear extensions, dormers, and newer builds.

Side hung, top hung, fixed, three arrangements, all in custom timber. And like our sash windows, every casement we make is built to order and double glazed as standard.

All the styles, all the options, it’s on our timber casement windows section.

Why timber makes sense for windows

Timber windows have been around for centuries, and there’s a reason they’ve stayed the go-to. It’s not just tradition, timber truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in several areas that matter to property owners.

Natural insulation

Timber conducts heat far less readily than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at the same frame thicknesses. The outcome is stronger thermal performance from the frame itself, and that’s before the double glazing comes into it.

Scotland runs on central heating. A timber frame’s thermal characteristics make a measurable difference to what you pay, and that saving shows up over the years.

Repair, don’t replace

Where wear appears in a timber window, repair remains a viable option.

Rot in a sill or bottom rail can be cut out and fresh timber spliced in. A damaged part of frame can be replaced in section. UPVC can’t be repaired in the same way. When it breaks down, the whole unit goes to landfill and you start again.

Over the lifespan of a property, the capacity to repair and maintain timber windows rather than replacing them means significant savings in both cost and material waste.

Sustainability

All our timber is sourced from responsibly managed forest.

Timber is a renewable material, it holds carbon as it stands and biodegrades naturally when it’s done. UPVC is plastic made from oil, and aluminium production takes a significant amount of power.

Your property’s environmental footprint is important? Then timber is the obvious option. It always has been.

Character and value

The substance, feel, and grain of timber windows is something no man-made material can replicate.

On a traditional sandstone tenement, a pale stone villa, or a period Scottish cottage, timber windows just look right in a way UPVC simply can’t match.

And they add tangible value to a property too, especially period properties where period features are part of the attraction.

Double-glazed timber windows

Whether sash or casement, all the windows we produce feature double-glazed sealed units fitted. It’s always included.

The sealed unit fits within the timber frame and works with two panes of glass separated by a sealed cavity. The effect is less heat transfer and improved sound insulation.

The timber frame’s natural insulating qualities combined with the double-glazed sealed unit give you excellent thermal and acoustic performance across both window styles. That’s what you get as standard.

Need glazing bars for a traditional divided-light appearance? We can fit those as well.

Older frames. Single glazing only. Still solid? We can often convert to double glazing as part of a restoration programme. Existing frames stay. Performance gets better. No full replacement.

This is a common project on Strathaven’s older properties. The existing sash windows are well-constructed, but the single glazing lets in cold air and street noise, and converting to double glazing fixes both.

Every unit we fit: satisfies the latest building regulations for thermal standards.

Timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings

Scotland: over 600 officially recognised conservation areas.

If your property is in one of these areas, you need to know that UPVC is not an approved window material. Your local council will likely require replacements that replicate the original in material, design, and profile.

Over 20 years making timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland. We understand what the council requires.

We can advise on consent conditions and produce windows that tick every planning condition while delivering modern standards. If you want more on the regulations, our sash and case windows page covers them in detail.

Timber types we use

Two timber types, and that’s what we work with across all window product range.

Treated pine is what most people pick, pressure-treated to resist rot and decay, takes a painted finish well, and handles Strathaven’s rain-heavy climate without a problem.

If a natural timber look is what you want, or if extra strength is required, hardwood is the option. It’s naturally more wear-resistant and takes stains and oils beautifully.

Property. Exposure. Finish. We advise on the right timber for each project.

Common questions about timber windows

Which timber window types do you manufacture?

Sash and case is the traditional Strathaven window, sliding up and down in a box frame, that’s one type. Casement windows are hinged and open outward, that’s the other. Both are available in treated pine or hardwood. And we produce fixed window panels too, for any window opening setup.

Timber or UPVC, which is the better window?

Yes, for performance, longevity, and appearance, timber is the better choice. It insulates more effectively at the equivalent frame thickness, lasts considerably longer when looked after, and can be restored rather than replaced. It’s also the sole material permitted for listed buildings and is highly favoured in conservation areas.

Can I replace single glazing to double glazing in existing timber windows?

In a significant number of cases, yes. Where current timber frames are in sound condition, we can convert the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. This keeps the existing frames and character while lifting thermal and acoustic standards.
