Stamperland has its own timber window experts and we’re called Woodfellas. We produce, restore, and install timber windows from our premises, working across residential properties and business properties across Central Scotland.
Every window is made to measure. Sustainably sourced treated pine or hardwood. Double glazing and enhanced security as standard.
Sash and case for a tenement, casements for a contemporary extension, or a full set of new windows for whatever sort of property you’ve got, we build them all ourselves and fit ourselves.
Timber windows we make
Two primary types of timber window, each perfectly suited to different properties and requirements. Both offered in treated pine or hardwood, and both include double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Sash windows
The original Scottish window, and still the first choice.
Sash windows slide up and down within a timber box frame, using a system of cords and counterbalance weights. They represent the historic window type on most of Stamperland’s period tenements, and they’re the only accepted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.
Whether your sash windows need refurbishing, sorting, or replacing altogether, we produce custom ones that replicate the existing profiles and proportions, while still delivering modern thermal and acoustic results.
The original frames are solid, so why replace them? Restoration, draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, is usually the better call. We do full assessments first, before we recommend replacement.

Casement windows
The hinged window. Swings outward, lets in more air, easy to clean from inside with no fuss. Casement windows became standard on Stamperland properties from the 1920s on, including extensions, dormers, and newer builds.
Side hung, top hung, fixed, three setups, all in custom timber. And like our sash windows, every casement we build is made to measure and double glazed as standard.

Timber windows, why they’re the best choice
Generations of timber windows, and they’re not still around out of habit. Timber actually outperforms UPVC and aluminium in several areas that matter to households. The numbers say it all.
How timber insulates naturally
Timber carries heat far less quickly than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at comparable frame widths. This translates to superior thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before the double glazing is even considered.
Scotland’s not exactly tropical, and energy costs are no joke, so the fact that timber frames retain warmth better makes a genuine impact to what you spend.
Fix, don’t replace
The best thing about timber windows is that if something deteriorates, you can repair it.
Got rot in a sill? You cut it out and fit new timber. Damaged part of frame? Replace in section. With UPVC, you can’t do that. When it breaks, the entire thing goes to landfill and you’re starting over.
Year after year, maintain rather than start over. Over the lifetime of a property, that adds up to real cost saved and a lot less material going to landfill.
The sustainable choice
All timber that goes into our windows is obtained from ethically managed forests.
Timber: natural. Holds carbon. Biodegrades cleanly. UPVC: plastic from oil. Aluminium production: highly carbon-heavy.
Care about your property’s environmental impact? Timber. Obvious option.
The character and value of timber windows
Pick up a timber window sash and you notice it, substance, depth, grain. No synthetic alternative can replicate that.
On a traditional sandstone tenement, a pale stone villa, or a traditional Scottish cottage, timber windows just belong in a way that UPVC just can’t pull off.
Value, too. On older properties, where period features are part of what makes them special, timber windows contribute tangible worth that UPVC never quite does.
Double glazed timber windows
Every single window we produce, sash or casement, comes with double-glazed sealed units fitted as standard. Always.
Sealed unit in the frame. Two layers of glass. Cavity between them. Reduces heat transfer. Boosts sound insulation.
Timber frame. Double glazing. Combined: excellent thermal and acoustic performance across both window types.
Need a traditional divided-light appearance? We add glazing bars.
Older frames. Single glazing only. Still solid? We can in many cases upgrade to double glazing as part of a restoration programme. Existing frames stay. Thermal performance improves. No full replacement.
Stamperland’s older properties bring up this request all the time. Well-built existing sash windows, but single glazing that lets in cold and road noise like it isn’t there.
Every unit we install is compliant with current building regulations for thermal standards. That’s guaranteed.

Timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings
Scotland has more than 600 designated conservation areas.
Property in a conservation area? UPVC: not acceptable. Council will likely require replacements matching the original. Material, design, profile.
We’ve been making timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland for over 20 years, so we know exactly what the council expects, no surprises.
Consent conditions, planning conditions, modern performance, we handle it all. And our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more detail for anyone who wants to know more.
Timber choices
Woodfellas uses two types of timber for its entire window product range.
Treated pine is the most requested choice, and for good reasons. It’s pressure-treated to prevent rot and decay, takes a painted finish well, and works well in Stamperland’s wet weather.
Want a natural timber finish? Need extra strength? Hardwood. Inherently more resistant to damage. Accepts stains and oils really well.
Not sure which timber to pick? We help you choose the right option for each project based on the property, the exposure, and the finish you want.
Timber windows FAQ
Which timber window types do you make?
We produce two main types: sash and case windows and casement windows, both made in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Stamperland design, sliding vertically within a timber box frame. Casement windows are hinged and open out. We also produce fixed window panels to suit any opening setup.
Are timber windows better than UPVC?
Three things: results, lifespan, appearance. Timber wins on all three. Better insulation at the comparable frame width. Considerably longer lifespan when looked after. Repairable, not fully replaced. And it’s the sole material permitted for listed buildings, greatly favoured in conservation areas too.
Can you upgrade single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?
In most cases, yes. If your current timber frames are in sound condition, we can convert the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. The result is better thermal and acoustic results while preserving the original frames and character.
