Timber Windows St Catherines

Woodfellas are the timber window experts working out of St Catherines. We build, restore, and put in timber windows from our St Catherines base, covering both residential properties and business properties right across Central Scotland.

Made to measure, ethically sourced timber, double glazing, improved security. Every window we make is made to the same standard. No shortcuts.

Sash and case for a tenement, casements for a modern extension, or a full set of replacement windows for whatever type of property you’ve got, we build them all in-house and install ourselves.

Our timber window range

Two types of timber window. Each suited to different properties and specifications. Both made in treated pine or hardwood. Both featuring double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash and case windows

Scotland’s original window design.

Sash windows move vertically within a timber box frame, via a system of cords and counterbalance weights. They are the standard window type on most of St Catherines’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements, and they’re the only permitted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.

The finest sash windows look exactly like the original. We restore, fix, and make custom ones matching existing profiles and proportions, while delivering modern thermal and acoustic standards where it matters.

The existing frames are sound, so why replace them? Restoration, draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, is often the most sensible call. We do full assessments first, before we ever recommend replacement.

Casement windows

Hinged. Open outward to open. Wider opening, easier access from inside. Common on St Catherines properties built from the 1920s on, including rear extensions, dormers, and new builds.

We produce custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed configurations. Like our sash windows, every casement is custom-built and fitted with double glazing as standard.

Our timber casement windows section has more detail on all listed styles and options.

Why choose timber for your windows

There’s a good reason people have been fitting timber windows in homes for hundreds of years, and it’s not just because they always have. Timber genuinely outperforms UPVC and aluminium in several areas that make a difference to homeowners.

Timber’s insulating qualities

Here’s something that surprises people: timber actually carries heat far less easily than aluminium, and it outperforms UPVC at the equivalent frame thickness. That means the frame itself is doing better thermal work before you even consider the double glazing.

Scotland’s not exactly warm, and energy costs are no joke, so the fact that timber frames keep heat in better makes a tangible effect to what you pay.

Repair before replace

Timber window deteriorates? You can sort it.

Rot in a sill or bottom rail can be removed and new timber fitted in. A damaged part of frame can be replaced in section. UPVC isn’t repairable in the same way. When it breaks down, the whole unit goes to landfill and you start again.

Over a property’s lifespan: repair and maintain, not replace. Saves cost. Reduces waste.

The sustainable option

All timber that goes into our windows is procured from responsibly managed forest.

Timber is a renewable resource that stores carbon throughout its working life and breaks down cleanly at end of life. UPVC is a plastic made from oil, and aluminium manufacturing is extremely carbon-heavy, worth knowing if the environment is important to you.

If the environmental footprint of your home matters to you, timber is obviously the better option. It’s not complicated.

Character and value

Weight. Depth. Grain. No man-made alternative can match it.

On a traditional sandstone tenement, a pale stone villa, or a period Scottish cottage, timber windows fit right in a way UPVC never quite manages. Worth considering if aesthetics matter to you.

And they add real value to a property too, especially period properties where period features are part of the appeal.

Double glazing in timber windows

Sash or casement, it doesn’t matter. Every window that leaves our workshop comes with double-glazed sealed units installed as standard. Always has.

The sealed unit is housed within the timber frame, employing two panes of glass separated by a cavity to limit heat transfer and boost sound insulation.

The timber frame does its bit. The double glazing does its bit. Together they deliver excellent thermal and acoustic results across both types, sash or casement, same result.

Need a traditional divided-light appearance? We fit glazing bars.

Older frames. Single glazing only. Still solid? We can often upgrade to double glazing as part of a restoration programme. Existing frames are preserved. Thermal performance gets better. No full replacement.

St Catherines’s older properties bring up this situation all the time. Well-built existing sash windows, but single glazing that admits cold and ambient noise like there’s nothing there.

Every unit we put in meets the latest building regulations for thermal standards. Always.

Conservation area timber windows

Scotland contains in excess of 600 officially recognised conservation areas.

Where a property falls within one of these areas, UPVC is not an permitted window material, and the local council authority may require replacements to match the original window in material, design, and profile.

We’ve been making timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties throughout Scotland for over 20 years. We know what the council requires, so you don’t have to work it out yourself.

We can advise on consent requirements and make windows that tick every planning condition while delivering modern standards. If you want more on the regulations, our sash and case windows page covers them in full detail.

Timber types

Two timber types. That’s what we stock across all window range.

Treated pine: most popular choice. Pressure-treated against rot and decay. Accepts paint well. Works well in St Catherines’s rain-heavy climate.

For properties where a natural timber finish is wanted, or where additional durability is needed, we offer hardwood, which is naturally more resistant to deterioration and accepts stains and oils with excellent results.

Property, exposure level, finish, three things we look at before helping you choose the right timber for each project. Get those right and the rest follows.

Timber windows FAQ

What types of timber windows can you make?

We produce sash and case windows and casement windows, both offered in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional St Catherines style, sliding up and down within a box frame. Casement windows are hinged and open outward. We also make fixed window panels to suit any window opening setup.

Are timber windows better than UPVC?

For performance, longevity, and appearance? Yes, timber wins. It insulates better at the same frame width, lasts considerably longer when looked after, and can be repaired not fully replaced. It’s also the only material accepted for listed buildings and greatly preferred in conservation areas.

Can you upgrade single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?

In many cases, yes. Solid current frames? We upgrade the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. Existing frames are preserved, thermal and acoustic results gets better.
