Timber Windows Springburn

Woodfellas are Springburn’s leading timber window specialists, making, restoring, and fitting wooden windows from a Springburn premises that serves houses and commercial properties right across Central Scotland.

Built to order, responsibly sourced timber, double glazing, enhanced security. Every window we make is made to the same standard. No shortcuts.

Sash and case for a tenement, casements for a modern extension, or a complete set of replacement windows for whatever kind of property you’ve got, we produce them all ourselves and fit ourselves.

Our timber window lineup

We produce two primary types of timber window, each built for different properties and requirements. Whichever you go for, both are offered in treated pine or hardwood and both feature double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Traditional sash windows

Scotland’s original window style.

Move vertically. Timber box frame. Weighted cords and pulleys. That’s a sash window. They’re on most of Springburn’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements and the only permitted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.

The finest sash windows should look exactly like the original. We refurbish, sort, and build custom ones matching existing profiles and proportions, while achieving modern thermal and acoustic results where it counts.

Restoration typically includes draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, and it’s the smartest call where the original frames are sound. We complete full assessments before recommending replacement.

Hinged windows

Casement windows swing out on hinges, creating a wider opening for fresh air and making cleaning simple from inside. They’re the standard option on Springburn properties built from the 1920s onwards, as well as extensions, dormers, and newer builds.

We make custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed setups. Like our sash windows, every casement is made to measure and fitted with double glazing as standard.

Our timber casement windows section covers all available options and configurations in full detail.

Why choose timber for your windows

Timber windows have been around for centuries, and there’s a reason they’ve stayed the go-to. It’s not just tradition, timber actually outperforms UPVC and aluminium in a number of areas that matter to households.

Natural thermal performance

Timber transfers heat far less quickly than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at comparable frame widths. The outcome is superior thermal efficiency from the frame itself, and that’s before the double glazing comes into it.

Scotland runs on central heating. A timber frame’s insulating properties make a tangible impact to what you spend, and that difference adds up over the years.

Repair before replace

Timber window deteriorates? You can sort it.

Rot in a sill, fresh timber goes in. Damaged frame section, it gets replaced in section. The story with UPVC is not the same: it can’t be repaired, so when it breaks, the entire unit ends up in landfill and you’re back at the beginning.

Think about it: over the lifetime of a property, being able to maintain and repair timber windows rather than going for full replacement cuts serious cost and cuts a lot of material waste.

Environmental sustainability

Every bit of timber we work with comes from ethically managed forest.

Timber is a sustainable resource that stores carbon for its entire lifespan and breaks down cleanly at end of life. UPVC is a petroleum-derived plastic, and aluminium manufacturing is highly energy-intensive.

Care about your home’s environmental impact? Timber. Obvious option.

Character and value

Timber windows have a substance, a character, and a natural grain that no artificial alternative can match.

On a traditional sandstone tenement, a light stone villa, or a traditional Scottish cottage, timber windows just look right in a way that UPVC just can’t pull off.

Value, too. On period homes, where period features are part of the appeal, timber windows add real worth that UPVC never quite does.

Double glazing timber windows

Every window we make, sash or casement, comes with double-glazed sealed units installed as standard. Always.

Sealed unit in the frame. Two sheets of glass. Sealed cavity between them. Cuts heat transfer. Improves sound insulation.

Combine the timber frame’s natural insulating characteristics with double glazing and you get solid thermal and acoustic results across both window types.

Need glazing bars for a traditional divided-light look? We can install those as well.

Still in good shape but single glazed? We can in many cases convert to double glazing as part of a restoration programme, retaining the original frames, improving thermal performance, and skipping a full replacement.

It comes up a lot on Springburn’s older properties, existing sash windows that are solid, but the single glazing admits cold air and street noise like it’s not even there.

And every unit we put in satisfies the latest building regulations for thermal performance, so no worries there.

Timber windows in conservation areas

More than 600 conservation areas throughout Scotland. The odds are yours is one of them.

If your property is in one of these areas, UPVC is not an approved window material, and your local council may well require replacements that replicate the original in material, design, and profile.

Over 20 years making timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings across Scotland. We understand what the council requires.

We walk you through consent conditions. We make windows that meet planning condition. Modern performance included. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more depth.

Types of timber we use

Woodfellas uses two types of timber for its entire window range.

Treated pine represents the most frequently chosen choice. It is pressure-treated to resist rot and decay, takes a painted finish well, and works well in Springburn’s rain-heavy weather.

A natural timber look, extra hardwearing performance, hardwood answers both. Naturally more wear-resistant, and it accepts stains and oils so well.

We’ll tell you which timber is most appropriate for your project based on the property, the exposure level, and what finish you’re after.

Wooden windows, frequently asked questions

What types of timber windows can you make?

We make sash and case windows and casement windows, both offered in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Springburn style, sliding up and down within a box frame. Casement windows open outward. We also make fixed window panels for any opening configuration.

Timber or UPVC, which is the better window?

For results, lifespan, and appearance? Yes, timber is the better choice. It insulates better at the equivalent frame width, lasts considerably longer when maintained, and can be fixed rather than fully replaced. It’s also the sole material permitted for listed buildings and is greatly favoured in conservation areas.

Can you replace single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?

In many cases, yes. If your current timber frames are in sound condition, we can switch the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. The result is better thermal and acoustic performance while retaining the original frames and appearance.
