Renfrew has its own timber window makers and we’re called Woodfellas. We build, renovate, and put in timber windows from our base, covering houses and commercial properties across Central Scotland.
Every window we produce is made to measure from ethically sourced treated pine or hardwood timber, with double glazing and improved security installed as standard.
Tenement, extension, any property. Sash and case, casement, or a complete replacement set: we build in-house and install ourselves.
Our timber window range
We make two primary types of timber window, each built for different properties and needs. Both are offered in treated pine or hardwood, and both come with double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Sash windows
Scotland’s original window type.
Before UPVC, before aluminium, Renfrew’s period tenements were fitted with sash windows, sliding up and down in a box frame on cords and counterbalance weights. They’re still the only accepted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.
We refurbish, repair, and build custom sash windows that precisely match original profiles and proportions while achieving modern thermal and acoustic results.
Restoration often covers draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades. Smartest route where original frames are sound. We survey everything before recommending any replacement.

Casement windows
Casement windows swing out on hinges, giving a larger opening for fresh air and making window cleaning easier from inside. They’re the common option on Renfrew properties going back from the 1920s onwards, as well as rear extensions, dormers, and new builds.
Side hung, top hung, fixed, we manufacture custom timber casement windows in all three styles. Like our sash windows, every single one is made to measure and double glazed as standard.

Timber windows, why they’re the right choice
Timber has been the leading window material for generations. Not just tradition, it genuinely outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that make a difference to households.
Natural thermal performance
The frame counts, not just the glass. Timber carries heat far less readily than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at the comparable frame width, giving stronger thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before the double glazing even gets involved.
Scotland runs on heating bills. A timber frame’s insulating characteristics make a real impact to what you spend, and that difference shows up over time.
Repair before replace
If a timber window is damaged, the good news is you can fix it.
Rot in a sill? Cut it out and splice in new timber. Damaged part of frame? Repair. UPVC can’t do any of that. When it gives up, the whole unit ends up in landfill and you’re starting from scratch.
Over the working life of a property, the option to maintain and repair timber windows rather than carrying out full replacement means genuine savings in both cost and waste.
The sustainable option
Every bit of timber we use is sourced from responsibly managed woodland, that’s non-negotiable.
Timber locks in carbon and breaks down cleanly, it’s a renewable resource. UPVC is plastic derived from oil, and aluminium production is extremely carbon-heavy.
If the carbon footprint of your property matters to you, timber is the obvious choice. It’s as straightforward as that.
Character and value
Pick up a timber window sash and you feel it, weight, thickness, grain. No synthetic alternative can copy that.
On a traditional sandstone tenement, a blonde stone villa, or a period Scottish cottage, timber windows belong in a way UPVC never quite manages. Worth considering if the look matter to you.
Timber windows also contribute tangible value to a property, particularly older properties where period features are part of the appeal.
Double glazed wooden windows
Whether sash or casement, all the windows we make come with double-glazed sealed units as standard. It’s always installed.
Two panes of glass. A cavity between them. The sealed unit sits inside the timber frame and handles the rest, limiting heat transfer, improving sound insulation.
Combined with the inherent thermal characteristics of the timber frame, a double-glazed timber window achieves strong thermal and acoustic results across both sash and casement types.
If your property requires a traditional divided-light appearance, we can fit glazing bars, just let us know.
Older frames. Single glazing only. Still solid? We can in many cases upgrade to double glazing as part of a restoration programme. Original frames are preserved. Performance improves. No full replacement.
It comes up a lot on Renfrew’s older properties, original sash windows that are well-built, but the single glazing allows in cold air and road noise like it’s not even there.
And every unit we put in meets current building regulations for thermal performance, so you’re covered.

Timber windows for conservation areas
Scotland has more than 600 designated conservation areas, and if you’re in one affects what you are permitted to do with your windows.
Property in a conservation area? UPVC: not approved. Council will often require replacements mirroring the original. Material, design, profile.
Over 20 years producing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland, we understand what the council expects.
We walk you through consent requirements. We build windows that satisfy planning condition. Modern standards guaranteed. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more detail.
Types of timber we work with
Two timber types. That’s what we stock across all window range.
Treated pine is what most people choose, pressure-treated to ward off rot and decay, accepts a painted finish well, and handles Renfrew’s wet conditions with no a problem.
Want a natural timber look or need extra durability? Hardwood is what you need, inherently more resistant to damage, and it accepts stains and oils so well.
We’ll tell you which timber is right for your job based on the property, the exposure level, and what look you’re after.
Timber windows, frequently asked questions
What styles of timber windows do you offer?
Sash and case is the traditional Renfrew window, moving vertically in a timber box frame, that’s one type. Casement windows are hinged and open outward, that’s the other. Both are available in treated pine or hardwood. And we build fixed window panels too, for any opening configuration.
Timber or UPVC, which is the better window?
For performance, lifespan, and appearance? Yes, timber is better. It insulates better at the equivalent frame width, lasts significantly longer when maintained, and can be fixed rather than fully replaced. It’s also the only material accepted for listed buildings and is strongly preferred in conservation areas.
Can you replace single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?
In many cases, yes! If your current frames are in sound condition, we can upgrade to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme, preserving the existing frames and appearance while improving thermal and acoustic performance.
