If you need timber windows done properly in Redding, Woodfellas are who you want. We produce, renovate, and install wooden windows out of our Redding base, covering homes and commercial properties throughout Central Scotland.
Each window is built to order using ethically sourced treated pine or hardwood timber. Double glazing and enhanced security are fitted as standard on every unit.
Whatever you need, sash and case for a tenement, casement for a newer extension, or a complete replacement set for any kind of property, we make them in-house and fit ourselves.
Wooden windows we make
Two types. Two sets of requirements. We build one for older properties, one for modern ones, but both come in treated pine or hardwood, and both come with double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Sash and case windows
The classic Scottish window, and still the best.
Slide up and down. Box frame. Cords and counterbalance weights. That’s a sash window. They’re on most of Redding’s period tenements and the only replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.
We renovate, repair, and build custom sash windows designed to match period profiles and proportions. The outcome is modern thermal and acoustic results in a window that looks exactly as it should.
Here’s the thing: renovating your existing frames with draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades is often the most sensible call if the frames are still sound. We always do a full inspection before recommending any replacement.

Casement window types
Casement windows swing outward on hinges, wider opening for ventilation, easy access from inside. You’ll see them on Redding properties built from the 1920s onwards, and on rear extensions, dormers, and new builds.
Side hung, top hung, fixed, we make custom timber casement windows in all three setups. Like our sash windows, every single one is built to order and double glazed as standard.
Our timber casement windows section has more detail on all listed designs and configurations.
Why timber makes sense for windows
There’s a good reason people have been putting timber windows in properties for generations, and it’s not just because they always have. Timber actually outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that count to property owners.
Timber’s natural insulation
Timber transfers heat far less readily than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at comparable frame thicknesses. The outcome is superior thermal performance from the frame itself, and that’s before the double glazing factors in.
Scotland runs on central heating. A timber frame’s thermal qualities make a tangible difference to what you pay, and that saving shows up over the years.
Timber windows, fix before replace
If a timber window deteriorates, the good news is you can fix it.
Rot in a sill or bottom rail can be cut out and new timber fitted in its stead. A damaged portion of frame can be replaced in section. UPVC offers no such alternative: when it fails, the entire unit ends up in landfill and the process starts from scratch.
Over the working life of a property, maintaining and repairing timber windows rather than going for full replacement saves money and reduces waste. It’s a straightforward calculation.
Sustainability
All our timber is procured from ethically managed forest.
Holds carbon as long as it stands, then biodegrades naturally. No landfill, no toxic process. UPVC is plastic from oil, and aluminium manufacturing is extremely carbon-heavy. The difference doesn’t need explaining.
If you care about the environmental impact of your property, timber is the obvious option.
The appeal and value of timber windows
The heft, character, and natural grain of timber windows is something no artificial alternative can copy.
Sandstone tenement. Blonde stone villa. Period Scottish cottage. Put timber windows in and they look right. Put UPVC in and it’s always slightly off, it just can’t that same rightness.
And they contribute tangible value to a property too, especially period homes where period features are part of what makes them the appeal.
Double glazed timber windows
Whether sash or casement, all the windows we manufacture come with double-glazed sealed units fitted. It’s always included.
The sealed unit is housed inside the timber frame, two panes of glass with a sealed cavity between them, reducing heat transfer and improving sound insulation.
The timber frame’s inherent insulating characteristics combined with the double-glazed sealed unit deliver solid thermal and acoustic results across both window styles. That’s what you get as standard.
Need glazing bars for a traditional divided-light appearance? We can fit those too.
Where older timber windows remain structurally sound but single glazed, we can often switch them to double glazing as part of a restoration programme, preserving the original frames and improving performance without necessitating a full replacement.
It’s a very frequent request on Redding’s older properties, solid existing sash windows, but single glazing that lets in cold air and ambient noise. Readily fixed.
Every unit we put in: satisfies the latest building regulations for thermal standards.

Timber windows in listed buildings and conservation areas
There are more than 600 conservation areas across Scotland, a significant total.
Conservation area, and your windows need attention? UPVC is not an permitted material, your local council may require replacements that replicate the original in material, design, and profile. It’s a strict requirement.
Having produced timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties across Scotland for over 20 years, we have developed a thorough understanding of what the council expects.
We can advise on consent requirements and make windows that meet every planning condition while still giving you modern performance. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more detail if you want to read up.
Timber types
Woodfellas uses two types of timber across its entire window product range.
Treated pine is what most customers choose, pressure-treated to ward off rot and decay, accepts a paint finish well, and handles Redding’s wet climate without a problem.
If a natural timber finish is what you want, or if extra durability is required, hardwood is the option. It’s naturally more wear-resistant and takes stains and oils very well.
Not sure which timber to choose? We advise on the right timber for each job based on the property, the exposure level, and the finish you have in mind.
FAQ, timber windows
What timber windows do you make?
We make sash and case windows and casement windows, both available in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Redding design, sliding vertically within a box frame. Casement windows hinge and swing outward. We also build fixed window panels for any window opening configuration.
Are timber windows better than UPVC?
For results, longevity, and looks? Yes, timber wins. It insulates more effectively at the comparable frame thickness, lasts a lot longer when maintained, and can be repaired not fully replaced. It’s also the sole material accepted for listed buildings and highly favoured in conservation areas.
Can existing timber windows be upgraded to double glazing?
In most cases, yes. If your current timber frames are in sound condition, we can switch the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. That keeps the original frames and look while improving thermal and acoustic performance.
