Woodfellas made our name in Prestwick producing timber windows, and that’s what we’re still doing. We make, restore, and install timber windows from our Prestwick premises, serving houses and businesses throughout Central Scotland.
Each window is built to order using responsibly sourced treated pine or hardwood timber. Double glazing and upgraded security are included as standard on every window.
Sash and case for a tenement? Casements for a new extension? A full replacement set for any property? We make them all ourselves and install ourselves.
Our timber window options
Two types of timber window. Each designed for different properties and requirements. Both made in treated pine or hardwood. Both featuring double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Sash windows
Scotland’s original window type.
You know what makes sash windows clever? They slide vertically in a box frame using cords and counterbalance weights. They’re the standard window on most of Prestwick’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements, and the only permitted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.
We refurbish, repair, and make custom sash windows. Original profiles. Period proportions. Modern thermal and acoustic results.
Here’s the thing: renovating your original frames with draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades is often the most sensible option if the frames are still sound. We always do a full inspection before recommending replacement.

Traditional casement windows
Casement windows are the hinged type: they open out to open, which gives you a larger opening for ventilation and means you can reach them from inside from inside. They’re standard on Prestwick properties built from the 1920s on, and they’re the usual choice for rear extensions, dormers, and newer builds.
Side hung, top hung, fixed, three setups, all in custom timber. And like our sash windows, every casement we produce is built to order and double glazed as standard.

Why choose timber for your windows
Timber’s historic position as the preferred window material is not just a matter of tradition. It truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in a number of areas that make a difference to property owners.
Natural thermal insulation
Timber conducts heat far less readily than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at the same frame widths. This means superior thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before the double glazing is even factored in.
In a climate like Scotland, where heating bills represent a real challenge for homeowners, the insulating properties of a timber frame make a tangible effect.
Repair, don’t replace
Timber window deteriorates? You can repair it.
Rot in a sill? Remove it and put in new timber. Damaged part of frame? Replace in section. UPVC isn’t repairable. When it goes, the whole unit ends up in landfill and you’re back to square one.
Over the lifetime of a property, being able to maintain and repair timber windows rather than having to replace them cuts real cost and cuts down on waste.
Sustainability
Every piece of timber we work with is sourced from ethically managed forests.
Timber is a renewable material that stores carbon throughout its working life and breaks down cleanly at end of life. UPVC is a oil-based plastic, and aluminium manufacturing is highly energy-intensive.
If the carbon footprint of your property is important to you, timber is obviously the right choice. It’s straightforward.
Character and value
Timber windows have a weight, a depth, and a grain that no artificial alternative can replicate.
Traditional sandstone tenement. Light stone villa. Period Scottish cottage. Put timber windows in and they look right. Put UPVC in and it’s always slightly off, it never quite manages that same fit.
They contribute genuine property value too. Especially older properties. Original or sympathetic features count to potential buyers.
Double-glazed timber windows
Every single window we produce, sash or casement, features double-glazed sealed units included as standard. Always.
The sealed unit fits inside the timber frame: it’s two panes of glass with a sealed cavity between them, which cuts down on heat transfer and lifts sound insulation.
The timber frame’s natural thermal properties combined with the double-glazed sealed unit deliver excellent thermal and acoustic results across both window styles. That’s what you get as standard.
We can also fit glazing bars if your property calls for a traditional divided-light appearance.
Got older timber windows that are still solid but only single glazed? In a lot of cases we can convert them to double glazing as part of a restoration, preserving the existing frames and lifting performance without a full replacement.
It happens a lot on Prestwick’s older properties, existing sash windows that are solid, but the single glazing admits cold air and street noise like it’s not even there.
Every unit we install: meets current building regulations for thermal standards.

Conservation area timber windows
Scotland: more than 600 officially recognised conservation areas.
If your property is in one of these areas, UPVC isn’t an acceptable window material, and your local council may well insist on replacements that replicate the original in material, design, and profile.
Over 20 years making timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland, we understand what the council requires.
We can walk you through consent requirements and make windows that meet every planning condition while still giving you modern standards. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more detail if you want to read up.
Timber types
Two timber types. That’s what we work with across the entire window range.
The most popular choice is treated pine. It’s pressure-treated to ward off rot and decay, holds a painted finish well, and holds up reliably in Prestwick’s wet conditions.
Want a natural timber look? Need extra strength? Hardwood. By nature more resistant to wear. Takes stains and oils beautifully.
We advise on the best timber for each project, taking into consideration the property style, its exposure level, and the required finish.
Common questions about timber windows
What styles of timber windows do you make?
We produce both sash and case windows and casement windows, made in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case windows are the traditional Prestwick design, working by moving up and down within a box frame. Casement windows are hinged and swing outward. We also build fixed window panels to match any window opening setup.
Are timber windows better than UPVC?
For performance, lifespan, and appearance? Yes, timber is the better choice. It insulates better at the equivalent frame width, lasts a lot longer when looked after, and can be repaired rather than fully replaced. It’s also the only material accepted for listed buildings and is greatly favoured in conservation areas.
Can existing timber windows be upgraded to double glazing?
In a significant number of cases, yes. Where current timber frames are in solid condition, we can convert the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. This keeps the original frames and character while improving thermal and acoustic standards.
