Timber Windows Parkgate

If you need timber windows done well in Parkgate, Woodfellas are the ones to call. We build, refurbish, and put in timber windows out of our Parkgate premises, serving residential properties and commercial properties throughout Central Scotland.

Each window is made to measure using sustainably sourced treated pine or hardwood timber. Double glazing and upgraded security come as standard on every window.

Whether you need sash and case windows for a period tenement, casement windows for a newer extension, or a full set of new windows for any sort of property, we make them in-house and put them in ourselves.

Timber windows we make

We produce two main types of timber window, one right for older properties, one right for newer ones. Both are offered in treated pine or hardwood, and both include double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash windows

The classic Scottish window, and still the go-to.

Sash windows move vertically within a timber box frame, with a system of cords and counterbalance weights doing the work. They’re the standard window type on most of Parkgate’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements, and the correct replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.

Whether your sash windows need renovating, sorting, or replacing altogether, we produce custom ones that replicate the original profiles and proportions, while still giving you modern thermal and acoustic results.

A lot of the time, restoring the original frames, draught-proofing and double glazing, is the more sensible route if the frames themselves are still sound. We do a full survey before suggesting full replacement.

Hinged windows

Casement windows are the hinged type: they swing outward to open, which gives you a bigger opening for ventilation and means you can reach them easily from inside. They’re standard on Parkgate properties dating from the 1920s on, and they’re the natural choice for extensions, dormers, and new builds.

Side hung, top hung, fixed, we manufacture custom timber casement windows in all three styles. Like our sash windows, every single one is custom-built and double glazed as standard.

Why choose timber for your windows

There’s a good reason people have been fitting timber windows in houses for generations, and it’s not just because they always have. Timber actually outperforms UPVC and aluminium in several areas that matter to homeowners.

Natural insulating qualities

Did you know timber conducts heat far less quickly than aluminium, and it outperforms UPVC at the equivalent frame thickness? That means superior thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before you even consider the double glazing.

Scotland’s not exactly warm, and energy costs are no joke, so the fact that timber frames insulate better makes a real effect to what you pay.

Repair, don’t replace

Timber window gets damaged? Good news: you can repair it.

Rot in a sill or bottom rail? Cut it out, fit new timber. Damaged frame section? Rebuild it. UPVC isn’t repairable: it fails, it ends up in landfill, you start again.

Over the working life of a property, looking after timber windows rather than going for full replacement cuts money and cuts waste. It’s a simple calculation.

Sustainability

Every bit of timber we select is procured from ethically managed forest, that’s how we operate.

Timber: renewable. Stores carbon. Biodegrades cleanly. UPVC: plastic from oil. Aluminium production: highly carbon-heavy.

Concerned about your home’s environmental footprint? Timber. Clear option.

Character and value

Pick up a timber window sash and you feel it, substance, depth, texture. No artificial material can replicate that.

On a traditional sandstone tenement, a light stone villa, or a traditional Scottish cottage, timber windows fit right in a way UPVC just can’t. Worth noting if the look matter to you.

Timber windows also add real value to a property, particularly older properties where original or sympathetic features are what attracts buyers.

Double glazing in timber windows

Every window we build, sash or casement, features double-glazed sealed units as standard. No extras required.

Sealed unit in the frame. Two layers of glass. Cavity between them. Cuts heat transfer. Improves sound insulation.

The timber frame does its bit. The double glazing does its bit. Together they give you solid thermal and acoustic performance across both styles, sash or casement, same result.

We can also fit glazing bars if your property requires a traditional divided-light appearance.

If your older timber windows are still structurally sound but single glazed, we can often convert them to double glazing as part of a restoration. This keeps the existing frames and boosts performance without a full replacement.

This is a regular job on Parkgate’s older properties, where solidly built existing sash windows are well-built but single glazing allows in cold and street noise.

Every unit we fit complies with current building regulations for thermal performance. Always.

Timber windows and conservation areas and listed buildings

There are more than 600 conservation areas across Scotland, a significant number.

If your property is in one of these areas, UPVC isn’t an approved window material, and your local council might well insist on replacements that replicate the original in material, design, and profile.

Over 20 years manufacturing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings across Scotland. We know what the council requires.

We can walk you through consent conditions and make windows that tick every planning condition while giving you modern performance. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more depth.

Wood types we use

Two timber types. That’s what we work with across the entire window range.

Treated pine is what most people choose, pressure-treated to resist rot and decay, accepts a paint finish well, and holds up in Parkgate’s rain-heavy climate without a problem.

If you want a natural timber finish, or if you need something harder-wearing, hardwood is the answer, it’s naturally more immune to wear and it takes stains and oils really well.

We’ll recommend which timber is most appropriate for your project based on the property, the exposure, and what look you’re after.

Common questions about timber windows

What timber windows do you make?

We make sash and case windows and casement windows, both offered in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Parkgate design, moving up and down within a box frame. Casement windows are hinged and swing outward. We also produce fixed window panels to suit any window opening setup.

Are timber windows worth it over UPVC?

On all three fronts, performance, lifespan, and appearance, yes, timber is the better choice. It insulates better at equivalent frame widths, lasts a lot longer when regularly maintained, and can be repaired rather than fully replaced when damage occurs. Timber is also the sole material permitted for listed buildings and is greatly preferred in conservation areas.

Can existing timber windows be upgraded to double glazing?

Many cases, yes. The existing frames are solid, so we switch the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. Original frames remain, look is preserved, and the thermal and acoustic results improves, without a full replacement.
