Timber Windows Paisley

Woodfellas. Paisley-based timber window specialists. We make, refurbish, and put in timber windows from our Paisley premises, covering residential properties and business properties across Central Scotland.

Every window is built to order. Ethically sourced treated pine or hardwood. Double glazing and upgraded security as standard.

Tenement, extension, any property. Sash and case, casement, or a complete new set: we build ourselves and put them in ourselves.

Our timber window range

We build two primary types of timber window, one built for older properties, one suited to newer ones. Both are available in treated pine or hardwood, and both include double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Traditional sash windows

The traditional Scottish window type.

Sash windows work on a clever system: they move up and down in a timber box frame using cords and counterbalance weights. You’ll see them on most of Paisley’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements, and if you’ve got a listed property or conservation area property, they’re the required replacement where sash and case was the existing design.

The finest sash windows should look exactly like the original. We refurbish, sort, and make custom ones replicating period profiles and proportions, while achieving modern thermal and acoustic performance where it matters.

Here’s the thing: restoring your original frames with draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades is often the most sensible call if the frames are still solid. We always do a full survey before suggesting any replacement.

Hinged casement windows

Hinged. Swing outward to open. Bigger opening, easier cleaning from inside. Common on Paisley properties dating from the 1920s on, including rear extensions, dormers, and new builds.

We make custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed styles. Like our sash windows, every casement is built to order and double glazed as standard.

All the designs, all the choices, it’s on our timber casement windows section.

Timber windows, why they’re the right choice

Centuries of timber windows, and they’re not still around out of habit. Timber truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in several areas that matter to households. The record speak for themselves.

How timber insulates naturally

Here’s something that trips up people: timber actually conducts heat far less easily than aluminium, and it outperforms UPVC at the comparable frame thickness. That means the frame itself is already doing stronger thermal work before you even consider the double glazing.

Scotland runs on heating bills. A timber frame’s thermal qualities make a tangible effect to what you pay, and that saving adds up over time.

Repair, not replace

Where wear occurs in a timber window, repair remains a practical route.

Rot in a sill or bottom rail, fresh timber goes in. Damaged frame part, it gets repaired. The story with UPVC is not the same: it can’t be repaired, so when it breaks, the entire unit ends up in landfill and you’re back at the beginning.

Over the lifespan of a property, the ability to look after timber windows rather than replacing them represents significant savings in both money and material waste.

Timber and the environment

All our timber is procured from ethically managed woodland.

Timber is a renewable resource that sequesters carbon across its lifespan and biodegrades cleanly at end of life. UPVC is a oil-derived plastic, and aluminium production is highly energy-intensive.

Care about your home’s carbon impact? Timber. Obvious option.

Appeal and property value

The substance, feel, and natural texture of timber windows is what no man-made alternative can match.

On a sandstone tenement, a light stone villa, or a traditional Scottish cottage, timber windows produce an visual fit that UPVC never quite manages.

And they contribute tangible value to a property too, especially period homes where period features are part of the appeal.

Double glazing in timber windows

Whether sash or casement, all the windows we manufacture feature double-glazed sealed units fitted. It’s always fitted.

The sealed unit fits within the timber frame, employing two panes of glass with a sealed cavity to limit heat transfer and improve sound insulation.

Combine the timber frame’s inherent thermal properties with double glazing and you get strong thermal and acoustic performance across both window types.

For properties that need a traditional divided-light look, we can install glazing bars as part of the installation.

Older frames. Single glazed. Still in good shape? We can often upgrade to double glazing as part of a restoration. Existing frames stay. Thermal performance improves. No full replacement.

It happens a lot on Paisley’s older properties, original sash windows that are well-built, but the single glazing allows in cold air and ambient noise like it’s not even there.

Every unit we install: satisfies the latest building regulations for thermal performance.

Timber windows for conservation areas

Scotland: more than 600 officially recognised conservation areas.

Property in a conservation area? UPVC: not acceptable. Council will often require replacements replicating the original. Material, design, profile.

Twenty years of making timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland. The council requirements? We’ve seen them all. We understand what’s expected.

We can walk you through consent conditions and make windows that tick every planning condition while still giving you modern standards. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more depth if you want to read up.

Timber types

We stock two timber types across all window product range, here’s what you need to know about each.

Treated pine is what most people choose, pressure-treated to ward off rot and decay, accepts a painted finish well, and performs in Paisley’s wet conditions without a problem.

A natural timber look, extra hardwearing performance, hardwood is the answer for both. By nature more resistant to wear, and it accepts stains and oils beautifully.

We’ll tell you which timber is best for your project based on the property, the exposure level, and what finish you’re after.

Timber windows FAQ

What types of timber windows do you make?

We manufacture two main types: sash and case windows and casement windows, both available in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Paisley style, sliding vertically within a box frame. Casement windows are hinged and open out. We also produce fixed window panels to suit any opening configuration.

Timber or UPVC, which is the better window?

For performance, lifespan, and appearance? Yes, timber wins. It insulates better at the comparable frame thickness, lasts a lot longer when looked after, and can be restored not replaced. It’s also the sole material accepted for listed buildings and highly favoured in conservation areas.

Can existing timber windows be upgraded to double glazing?

Many cases, yes. The current frames are sound, so we upgrade the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. Original frames stay, appearance stays, and the thermal and acoustic performance gets better, without a full replacement.
