Woodfellas. Newtown-based timber window experts. We manufacture, renovate, and install timber windows from our Newtown premises, working across homes and commercial properties throughout Central Scotland.
Not a single window leaves our workshop without being made to measure. Responsibly sourced treated pine or hardwood, double glazing, and improved security, all standard.
Sash and case for a tenement, casements for a modern extension, or a full set of replacement windows for whatever sort of property you’ve got, we produce them all in-house and put them in ourselves.
Wooden windows we make
We produce two main types of timber window, each built for different properties and needs. Both are available in treated pine or hardwood, and both come with double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Sash windows
The classic Scottish window, and still the best.
Sash windows work on a clever system: they move up and down in a timber box frame using cords and counterbalance weights. You’ll spot them on most of Newtown’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements, and if you’ve got a listed property or conservation area property, they’re the only accepted replacement where sash and case was the existing design.
We renovate, sort, and manufacture custom sash windows that nail the original profiles and proportions while delivering modern thermal and acoustic performance.
Restoration usually covers draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, and it’s the smartest route where the original frames are sound. We carry out full inspections before recommending replacement.

Casement windows
Casement windows open out on hinges, larger opening for fresh air, easy cleaning from inside. You’ll spot them across Newtown properties built from the 1920s onwards, and on extensions, dormers, and newer builds.
We manufacture custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed styles. Just like our sash windows, every casement is made to measure and double glazed as standard, no exceptions.
All the options, all the configurations, it’s on our timber casement windows page.
Why choose timber for your windows
Timber has been the go-to window material for generations, and it’s worth understanding why. It actually outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that count to property owners, and that’s not just tradition.
Timber’s insulating properties
Timber carries heat far less easily than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at equivalent frame thicknesses. This gives you better thermal performance from the frame itself, before the double glazing is even added.
Scotland’s not exactly warm, and energy costs are no joke, so the fact that timber frames insulate better makes a genuine difference to what you pay.
Repair, don’t replace
Where damage appears in a timber window, restoration remains a realistic choice.
Rot in a sill, new timber goes in. Damaged frame part, it gets replaced in section. The story with UPVC is different: it can’t be repaired, so when it breaks, the entire unit goes to landfill and you’re back at the beginning.
Over the lifespan of a property, maintaining and repairing timber windows rather than going for full replacement cuts money and cuts material waste. It’s a straightforward calculation.
The sustainable option
All our timber is sourced from sustainably managed forest.
Stores carbon as long as it ages, then breaks down cleanly. No landfill, no harmful process. UPVC is plastic from oil, and aluminium production is extremely carbon-heavy. The contrast doesn’t need explaining.
If the carbon footprint of your property matters to you, timber is the obvious option. It’s as straightforward as that.
Character and appeal
Timber windows have a heft, a character, and a grain that no man-made material can match.
On a traditional sandstone tenement, a light stone villa, or a traditional Scottish cottage, timber windows just belong in a way that UPVC just can’t pull off.
Value, too. On period properties, where period features are part of what makes them special, timber windows contribute real value that UPVC never quite does.
Double glazed timber windows
Sash or casement, it doesn’t matter. Every window that we produce includes double-glazed sealed units fitted as standard. Always has.
Two layers of glass. A sealed cavity between them. The sealed unit is housed inside the timber frame and handles the rest, limiting heat transfer, lifting sound insulation.
Put that double glazing together with the natural insulating qualities of the timber frame, and you’ve got excellent thermal and acoustic performance across both sash and casement.
Traditional divided-light appearance? We can add glazing bars, a straightforward addition that makes a real difference.
Older frames. Single glazing only. Still solid? We can often switch to double glazing as part of a restoration. Original frames are preserved. Thermal performance improves. No full replacement.
Newtown’s older properties bring up this situation all the time. Well-constructed original sash windows, but single glazing that lets in cold air and street noise like it isn’t there.
Every unit we put in is compliant with the latest building regulations for thermal performance. That’s guaranteed.

Timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings
Scotland has over 600 recognised conservation areas, and if you’re in one affects what you can do with your windows.
Where a property is located in one of these areas, UPVC is not an permitted window material, and the local council authority will likely require replacements to match the existing window in material, design, and profile.
Over 20 years producing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings across Scotland. We understand what the council expects.
Consent conditions, planning conditions, modern performance, we handle it all. And our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more depth for anyone who wants to know more.
Wood types we work with
Two timber types, and that’s what we stock across the entire window range.
Treated pine is what most people choose, pressure-treated to resist rot and decay, holds a paint finish well, and holds up in Newtown’s rain-heavy climate without a problem.
A natural timber look, extra hardwearing performance, hardwood is the answer for both. Inherently more resistant to wear, and it takes stains and oils beautifully.
We recommend the right timber for each project, taking into consideration the property type, its exposure, and the desired finish.
Timber windows FAQ
What styles of timber windows do you make?
We manufacture sash and case windows and casement windows, both offered in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case: the traditional Newtown design, sliding vertically in a box frame. Casements: hinged, open outward. Fixed panels available too, for any opening configuration.
Are timber better than UPVC?
For results, lifespan, and appearance? Yes, timber is the better choice. It insulates more effectively at the equivalent frame width, lasts significantly longer when maintained, and can be fixed rather than fully replaced. It’s also the only material permitted for listed buildings and is strongly preferred in conservation areas.
Replacing single glazing to double glazing in timber windows, is it possible?
In many cases, yes. Where current timber frames are in solid condition, we can convert the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. This preserves the original frames and appearance while lifting thermal and acoustic standards.
