Timber Windows New Cumnock

If you need timber windows done right in New Cumnock, Woodfellas are the right choice. We make, refurbish, and fit wooden windows out of our New Cumnock workshop, serving houses and commercial properties right across Central Scotland.

Made to measure, ethically sourced timber, double glazing, enhanced security. Every window we produce is made to the same standard. No shortcuts.

Sash and case for a tenement, casements for a modern extension, or a full set of new windows for whatever sort of property you’ve got, we make them all in-house and put them in ourselves.

Our wooden window range

We make two main types of timber window, each suited to different properties and needs. Whichever you pick, both are available in treated pine or hardwood and both come with double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash windows

The traditional window design for Scottish properties.

Sash windows move up and down within a box frame, with a system of cords and counterbalance weights doing the work. They’re the original window type on most of New Cumnock’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements, and the only accepted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.

We refurbish, repair, and build custom sash windows. Period profiles. Original proportions. Modern thermal and acoustic standards.

The original frames are in good shape, so why swap them? Restoration, draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, is usually the better option. We do full inspections first, before we ever recommend going further.

Standard casement windows

Casement windows are the hinged type: they open out to open, which gives you a bigger opening for fresh air and means you can clean them without trouble from inside. They’re all over New Cumnock properties dating from the 1920s on, and they’re the natural choice for rear extensions, dormers, and new builds.

Side hung, top hung, fixed, we manufacture custom timber casement windows in all three styles. Like our sash windows, every single one is built to order and fitted with double glazing as standard.

All the styles, all the options, it’s on our timber casement windows page.

Why timber is the right choice for windows

Timber’s long-standing position as the preferred window material is not simply a question of tradition. It genuinely outperforms UPVC and aluminium in a number of areas that count to homeowners.

Natural insulation

Timber conducts heat far less easily than aluminium. Outperforms UPVC at comparable frame widths. Superior thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before the double glazing even gets involved.

Scotland runs on heating bills. A timber frame’s thermal properties make a measurable difference to what you pay, and that saving adds up over the years.

Timber windows, fix before replace

Timber window gets damaged? You can repair it.

Got rot in a sill? You cut it out and splice in fresh timber. Damaged part of frame? Rebuild. With UPVC, you can’t do that. When it fails, the whole thing ends up in landfill and you’re starting over.

Over a property’s working life: repair and maintain, not replace. Cuts cost. Reduces waste.

Sustainability

Every bit of timber we select is procured from responsibly managed woodland, that’s how it works.

Timber is a natural material, it holds carbon as it works and biodegrades cleanly when it’s done. UPVC is plastic made from oil, and aluminium manufacturing takes a huge amount of power.

Concerned about your property’s environmental footprint? Timber. Clear choice.

Timber windows, character and value

Timber windows possess a weight, character, and natural grain that no synthetic material can replicate.

Sandstone tenement. Light stone villa. Period Scottish cottage. Put timber windows in and they belong. Put UPVC in and something’s slightly off, it just can’t that same rightness.

And they contribute real value to a property too, especially older properties where period features are part of the appeal.

Timber windows with double glazing

Every window we make, sash or casement, comes with double-glazed sealed units fitted. No add-ons needed.

The sealed unit is housed inside the timber frame: it’s two sheets of glass with a cavity between them, which limits heat transfer and boosts sound insulation.

The timber frame does its bit. The double glazing does its bit. Together they achieve excellent thermal and acoustic performance across both types, sash or casement, same standard.

Need a traditional divided-light appearance? We add glazing bars.

The frames are in good shape, they’re just single glazed. In a lot of cases, we can convert to double glazing as part of a restoration programme, retaining what’s worth saving, lifting thermal performance, no full replacement required.

It comes up a lot on New Cumnock’s older properties, existing sash windows that are well-built, but the single glazing lets in cold air and street noise like it’s not even there.

Every unit we fit is compliant with current building regulations for thermal performance. That’s guaranteed.

Timber windows for conservation areas

Scotland has over 600 designated conservation areas, and if you’re in one, it matters.

Where a property falls within one of these areas, UPVC is not an acceptable window material, and the local planning authority will often require replacements to match the original design in material, design, and profile.

Over 20 years making timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings across Scotland. We know what the council requires.

We can advise on consent conditions and build windows that meet planning condition while giving you modern standards. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more detail.

Types of timber we use

Woodfellas works with two types of timber for its full window range.

Most people pick treated pine. It’s pressure-treated to prevent rot and decay, holds a painted finish really well, and handles New Cumnock’s wet conditions with no trouble.

If a natural timber finish is desired, or if extra durability is required, hardwood is the option. It’s by nature more wear-resistant and takes stains and oils very well.

Property, exposure, finish, three things we consider before helping you choose the right timber for each job. Get those right and the rest follows.

Timber windows, your questions answered

What types of timber windows do you make?

We produce both sash and case windows and casement windows, available in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case windows are the traditional New Cumnock design, operating by sliding vertically within a timber box frame. Casement windows are hinged and swing outward. We also make fixed window panels to suit any opening setup.

Are timber a better choice than UPVC?

Three things: results, lifespan, looks. Timber wins on all three. Better insulation at the comparable frame thickness. Significantly longer lifespan when looked after. Can be repaired, not replaced. And it’s the sole material accepted for listed buildings, greatly preferred in conservation areas too.

Can you replace single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?

Most cases, yes. The current frames are sound, so we switch the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. Original frames remain, appearance stays, and the thermal and acoustic performance gets better, without a full replacement.
