Timber Windows Moodiesburn

Woodfellas are the timber window experts operating from Moodiesburn. We build, restore, and put in wooden windows from our Moodiesburn base, serving both residential properties and business properties right across Central Scotland.

Every window that leaves our workshop is built to your exact size from ethically sourced treated pine or hardwood, and double glazing and upgraded security are included as standard.

Whether you need sash and case windows for a Victorian tenement, casement windows for a contemporary extension, or a full set of new windows for any type of property, we produce them ourselves and fit ourselves.

Wooden windows we make

Two types. Two different requirements. We build one for older properties, one for newer ones, but both are available in treated pine or hardwood, and both include double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash and case windows

Scotland’s original window style.

Sash windows slide vertically within a box frame, using a system of cords and counterbalance weights doing the work. They’re the original window type on most of Moodiesburn’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements, and the required replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.

Whether your sash windows need renovating, sorting, or replacing altogether, we build custom ones that mirror the period profiles and proportions, while still achieving modern thermal and acoustic performance.

A lot of the time, renovating the existing frames, draught-proofing and double glazing, is the more sensible route if the frames themselves are still sound. We always do a full inspection before recommending full replacement.

Standard casement windows

Hinged. Open outward to open. Bigger opening, easier access from inside. Standard on Moodiesburn properties dating from the 1920s on, including extensions, dormers, and newer builds.

We build custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed setups, so whatever style you need, we can do it. And like our sash windows, every casement is custom-built and fitted with double glazing as standard.

Why timber is the right choice

Timber has been the default window material for centuries, and it’s worth knowing why. It actually outperforms UPVC and aluminium in a number of areas that make a difference to households, and that’s not just tradition.

Timber’s insulating properties

The frame matters, not just the glass. Timber transfers heat far less readily than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at the comparable frame thickness, giving better thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before the double glazing even factors in.

In a climate like Scotland, where heating costs represent a real issue for most households, the insulating properties of a timber frame make a tangible effect.

Fix it, don’t replace it

Where deterioration develops in a timber window, remediation remains a practical choice.

Rot in a sill can be removed and fresh timber fitted in its place. A damaged section of frame can be rebuilt. UPVC offers no such route: when it deteriorates, the whole unit ends up in landfill and everything starts again.

Over the lifespan of a property, being able to repair and maintain timber windows rather than having to replace them saves real cost and reduces waste.

Eco credentials

We get all our timber from responsibly managed forest, so you can rest easy it’s responsibly produced.

Timber is a natural material that holds carbon during its lifespan and biodegrades naturally at end of life. UPVC is a plastic made from oil, and aluminium production is extremely carbon-heavy, worth knowing if the environment is important to you.

For people for whom the environmental footprint of their home is a consideration, timber is the obvious choice.

Beauty and value

The weight, character, and grain of timber windows is something no artificial material can match.

On a traditional sandstone tenement, a light stone villa, or a period Scottish cottage, timber windows just look right in a way that UPVC just can’t pull off.

And they add genuine value to a property too, especially period homes where original or sympathetic features are part of the appeal.

Double glazing in wooden windows

All windows produced by Woodfellas, whether sash or casement, feature double-glazed sealed units fitted as standard.

Two panes of glass. A cavity between them. The sealed unit is housed inside the timber frame and handles the rest, limiting heat transfer, lifting sound insulation.

Combined with the natural thermal qualities of the timber frame, a double-glazed timber window gives you solid thermal and acoustic results across both sash and casement styles.

We can also install glazing bars if your property calls for a traditional divided-light look.

Got older timber windows that are still sound but only single glazed? In many cases we can upgrade them to double glazing as part of a restoration programme, retaining the original frames and lifting performance without replacing everything.

It’s a very common project on Moodiesburn’s older properties, well-constructed original sash windows, but single glazing that lets in cold air and road noise. Readily fixed.

Every sealed unit we put in complies with the latest building regulations for thermal standards.

Listed buildings timber windows

Scotland has more than 600 officially recognised conservation areas, and if you’re in one, it matters.

If your property is in one of these areas, UPVC isn’t an permitted window material, and your local council may well require replacements that match the original in material, design, and profile.

Having produced timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties across Scotland for over 20 years, we have a solid understanding of what the council expects.

We can help with consent requirements and make windows that satisfy planning condition while delivering modern performance. If you want more on the regulations, our sash and case windows page covers them in detail.

Wood options

Two timber types. That’s what we stock across the entire window range.

Treated pine is the most requested option. It is pressure-treated to prevent rot and decay, holds a painted finish well, and holds up well in Moodiesburn’s damp weather.

If you prefer a natural timber look, or if you need something harder-wearing, hardwood is the one, it’s naturally more resistant to damage and it takes stains and oils beautifully.

Property. Exposure. Finish. We advise on the right timber for each job.

FAQ, timber windows

What types of timber windows do you make?

We make sash and case windows and casement windows, both made in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Moodiesburn design, sliding up and down within a timber box frame. Casement windows are hinged and swing out. We also produce fixed window panels to match any window opening setup.

Is timber better than UPVC?

On results, lifespan, and looks: yes. Timber insulates more effectively at the same frame thickness, lasts a lot longer when maintained, and can be repaired rather than replaced when damage occurs. It’s also the sole material accepted for listed buildings and is greatly favoured in conservation areas.

Replacing single glazing to double glazing in timber windows, is it possible?

In most cases, yes. Solid existing frames? We switch the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. Original frames are preserved, thermal and acoustic performance improves.
