Timber Windows Moffat

Woodfellas are Moffat’s foremost timber window makers, making, refurbishing, and fitting timber windows from a Moffat workshop that serves homes and commercial properties throughout Central Scotland.

Each window is custom-built using sustainably sourced treated pine or hardwood timber. Double glazing and upgraded security come as standard on every window.

Tenements need sash and case, contemporary extensions want casement, and some properties need a full replacement set. Whatever the project, we make in-house and put them in ourselves. No middlemen.

Wooden windows we make

We make two primary types of timber window, each designed for different properties and requirements. Both are available in treated pine or hardwood, and both feature double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Traditional sash windows

The classic Scottish window, and still the go-to.

Before UPVC, before aluminium, Moffat’s period tenements were built with sash windows, sliding vertically in a box frame on cords and counterbalance weights. They’re still the only accepted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.

We restore, fix, and make custom sash windows that nail the original profiles and proportions while delivering modern thermal and acoustic results.

A lot of the time, restoring the existing frames, draught-proofing and double glazing, is the more sensible call if the frames themselves are still solid. We always do a full survey before recommending full replacement.

Casement window types

The hinged window. Opens outward, lets in more ventilation, easy to clean from inside without leaning out. Casement windows became the norm on Moffat properties from the 1920s on, including rear extensions, dormers, and new builds.

We build custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed configurations, so whatever configuration you need, we can do it. And like our sash windows, every casement is custom-built and fitted with double glazing as standard.

Our timber casement windows section has more information on all listed options and choices.

Why timber windows make sense

Timber windows have been around for generations, and there’s a reason they’ve stayed the go-to. It’s not just tradition, timber genuinely outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that matter to homeowners.

How timber insulates naturally

Here’s something that trips up people: timber actually carries heat far less quickly than aluminium, and it outperforms UPVC at the comparable frame thickness. That means the frame itself is already doing stronger thermal work before you even consider the double glazing.

In a climate like Scotland, where heating costs represent a real challenge for homeowners, the insulating properties of a timber frame make a real effect.

Fix it, don’t replace it

If a timber window is damaged, the good news is you can repair it.

Got rot in a sill? You cut it out and fit new timber. Damaged section of frame? Replace in section. With UPVC, you can’t do that. When it fails, the whole thing ends up in landfill and you’re starting over.

Over the lifetime of a property, being able to maintain and repair timber windows rather than having to replace them cuts real cost and reduces waste.

Sustainability

All timber that we put into our windows is sourced from responsibly managed forests.

Timber is a renewable resource that stores carbon during its lifespan and biodegrades naturally at end of life. UPVC is a plastic made from oil, and aluminium manufacturing is extremely energy-intensive, worth knowing if the environment matters to you.

If the carbon footprint of your property is important to you, timber is obviously the right choice. It’s straightforward.

Beauty and appeal

There’s a substance, a feel, and a natural grain to timber windows that man-made materials just can’t match.

Sandstone tenement. Light stone villa. Period Scottish cottage. Timber windows belong. UPVC never quite manages.

Value, too. On period homes, where period features are part of what makes them special, timber windows contribute genuine value that UPVC never quite does.

Timber windows with double glazing

Every single window we make, sash or casement, includes double-glazed sealed units fitted as standard. Always.

Sealed unit in the frame. Two layers of glass. Cavity between them. Reduces heat transfer. Improves sound insulation.

Combined with the inherent insulating qualities of the timber frame, a double-glazed timber window achieves excellent thermal and acoustic results across both sash and casement types.

Need a traditional divided-light look? We install glazing bars.

The frames are in good shape, they’re just single glazed. In a lot of cases, we can upgrade to double glazing as part of a restoration, retaining what’s worth keeping, improving performance, no full replacement needed.

Moffat’s older properties throw up this situation all the time. Well-constructed existing sash windows, but single glazing that admits cold and road noise like it isn’t there.

Building regulations for thermal performance? Every unit we install complies with them. No exceptions.

Listed buildings timber windows

Scotland has over 600 designated conservation areas, and if you’re in one, it makes a difference.

Property in a conservation area? UPVC: not permitted. Council will likely require replacements mirroring the original. Material, design, profile.

Over 20 years producing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland. We know what the council requires.

Consent requirements, planning conditions, modern performance, we cover all of it. And our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more detail for anyone who wants to know more.

Wood options

Across all our window ranges, we use two types of timber.

Most customers go for treated pine. It’s pressure-treated to prevent rot and decay, takes a painted finish well, and performs in Moffat’s rain-heavy climate without any issue.

Want a natural timber finish or need extra hardwearing performance? Hardwood is the answer, by nature more resistant to damage, and it takes stains and oils so well.

We advise on the best timber for each job, taking into consideration the property age, its exposure, and the required finish.

Timber windows, your questions answered

What types of timber windows do you produce?

We produce sash and case windows and casement windows, both available in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Moffat style, sliding up and down within a box frame. Casement windows are hinged and swing outward. We also build fixed window panels to match any window opening setup.

Are timber windows better than UPVC?

For results, longevity, and appearance? Yes, timber is better. It insulates better at the comparable frame width, lasts a lot longer when looked after, and can be fixed rather than fully replaced. It’s also the sole material permitted for listed buildings and is greatly favoured in conservation areas.

Is it possible to upgrade single glazing in timber windows?

In many cases, yes. Where existing timber frames are in sound condition, we can switch the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. This retains the original frames and appearance while improving thermal and acoustic standards.
