Timber Windows Mearns

Woodfellas. Mearns-based timber window makers. We make, refurbish, and fit wooden windows from our Mearns premises, serving residential properties and business properties across Central Scotland.

Made to measure, sustainably sourced timber, double glazing, upgraded security. Every window that leaves our workshop is built the same way. No shortcuts.

Whether you need sash and case windows for a period tenement, casement windows for a newer extension, or a complete set of replacement windows for any sort of property, we produce them ourselves and put them in ourselves.

Timber windows we make

Two main types of timber window, each built for different properties and specifications. Both available in treated pine or hardwood, and both include double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash windows

Scotland’s classic window design.

Sash windows operate by sliding up and down within a box frame, via a system of cords and counterbalance weights. They represent the historic window type on most of Mearns’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements, and they’re the required replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.

Whether your sash windows need renovating, fixing, or replacing altogether, we build custom ones that mirror the existing profiles and proportions, while still achieving modern thermal and acoustic results.

The original frames are in good shape, so why replace them? Restoration, draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, is often the smarter option. We carry out full inspections first, before we recommend replacement.

Casement windows

Casement windows open outward on hinges, creating a wider opening for fresh air and making window cleaning straightforward from inside. They’re the standard choice on Mearns properties going back from the 1920s onwards, as well as extensions, dormers, and newer builds.

Side hung, top hung, fixed, three configurations, all in custom timber. And like our sash windows, every casement we produce is custom-built and fitted with double glazing as standard.

Why timber windows make sense

Timber’s centuries-long position as the go-to window material is not simply a matter of tradition. It genuinely outperforms UPVC and aluminium in several areas that count to homeowners.

Natural insulation

Did you know timber transfers heat far less readily than aluminium, and it outperforms UPVC at the same frame thickness? That means better thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before you even add the double glazing.

In Scotland, where heating bills are a real issue, the insulating properties of a timber frame make a genuine impact, and that adds up over time.

Fix it, don’t replace it

Wear sets in. With timber, that’s not the end of the story. You can sort it.

Rot in a sill or bottom rail, new timber goes in. Damaged frame part, it gets replaced in section. The story with UPVC is not the same: it can’t be repaired, so when it breaks, the entire unit goes to landfill and you’re back at the beginning.

Year after year, maintain rather than replace. Over the life of a property, that means real money not spent and a lot less material going to landfill.

Sustainability

All our timber is procured from sustainably managed forest.

Timber holds carbon and breaks down naturally, it’s a renewable material. UPVC is plastic derived from oil, and aluminium production is highly carbon-heavy.

If the environmental footprint of your property matters to you, timber is clearly the right option. It’s not complicated.

The appeal and value of timber windows

Timber windows possess a substance, depth, and grain that no synthetic alternative can replicate.

On a traditional sandstone tenement, a pale stone villa, or a traditional Scottish cottage, timber windows create an aesthetic rightness that UPVC never quite manages.

Value, too. On period properties, where original or sympathetic features are part of the appeal, timber windows add real worth that UPVC can’t match.

Double glazing in timber windows

All windows produced by Woodfellas, whether sash or casement, feature double-glazed sealed units included as standard.

The sealed unit sits within the timber frame and uses two panes of glass with a cavity. The result is less heat transfer and better sound insulation.

Put that double glazing together with the inherent insulating characteristics of the timber frame, and you’ve got solid thermal and acoustic performance across both sash and casement.

We can also fit glazing bars if your property needs a traditional divided-light look.

Where older timber windows are in sound condition but single glazed, we can often switch them to double glazing as part of a restoration, retaining the original frames and boosting thermal performance without needing a full replacement.

Common on Mearns’s older properties. Original sash windows: well-built. Single glazing: lets in cold air and ambient noise.

Building regulations for thermal performance? Every unit we put in meets them. No exceptions.

Timber windows for conservation areas

Scotland has more than 600 officially recognised conservation areas.

Where a property is located in one of these areas, UPVC is not an approved window material, and the local planning authority may require replacements to mirror the original design in material, design, and profile.

We’ve been manufacturing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland for over 20 years, so we know exactly what the council expects, nothing new to us.

Consent conditions, planning conditions, modern standards, we handle it all. And our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more depth for anyone who wants to know more.

Timber types

Two timber types. That’s it. We stock both across the entire window product range.

Treated pine represents the most popular option. It is pressure-treated to prevent rot and decay, holds a painted finish well, and holds up reliably in Mearns’s wet climate.

A natural timber finish, extra strength, hardwood answers both. By nature more resistant to wear, and it takes stains and oils beautifully.

Property. Exposure level. Finish. We advise on the right timber for each job.

FAQ, timber windows

Which timber window types do you manufacture?

We manufacture two main types: sash and case windows and casement windows, both made in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Mearns design, sliding up and down within a box frame. Casement windows are hinged and open outward. We also produce fixed window panels to match any opening configuration.

Is timber better than UPVC?

Yes, for performance, longevity, and appearance, timber is the better choice. It insulates better at the comparable frame thickness, lasts considerably longer when maintained, and can be restored rather than replaced. It’s also the sole material permitted for listed buildings and is highly preferred in conservation areas.

Can existing timber windows be converted to double glazing?

In many cases, yes. If your existing timber frames are in solid condition, we can convert the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. That preserves the existing frames and character while lifting thermal and acoustic performance.
