Timber Windows Maryhill

Maryhill has its own timber window experts and we’re called Woodfellas. We make, restore, and fit wooden windows from our premises, covering residential properties and commercial properties throughout Central Scotland.

Built to order, sustainably sourced timber, double glazing, improved security. Every window that leaves our workshop is built the same way. No shortcuts.

Tenement, extension, any property. Sash and case, casement, or a full new set: we produce in-house and put them in ourselves.

Our wooden window options

We produce two primary types of timber window, each suited to different properties and requirements. Both are offered in treated pine or hardwood, and both feature double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Traditional sash windows

The traditional Scottish window, and it hasn’t changed.

Sash windows move up and down within a timber box frame, via a system of weighted cords and pulleys. They are the original window type on most of Maryhill’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements, and they’re the only accepted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.

We restore, repair, and build custom sash windows designed to match original profiles and proportions. The outcome is modern thermal and acoustic performance in a window that looks exactly as it should.

Here’s the thing: refurbishing your existing frames with draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades is often the most sensible move if the frames are still sound. We always do a full assessment before suggesting replacement.

Hinged windows

Casement windows swing out on hinges, creating a bigger opening for airflow and making cleaning easier from inside. They’re the common choice on Maryhill properties going back from the 1920s onwards, as well as extensions, dormers, and new builds.

Side hung. Top hung. Fixed. We manufacture custom timber casement windows in all three. Every one built to order. Fitted with double glazing as standard.

Our timber casement windows page covers all available options and configurations in complete detail.

Why timber is the right choice for windows

Timber has been the go-to window material for hundreds of years, and it’s worth knowing why. It truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in several areas that make a difference to homeowners, and that’s not just tradition.

Natural insulating properties

Timber carries heat far less easily than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at the same frame thicknesses. The outcome is superior thermal performance from the frame itself, and that’s before the double glazing factors in.

In Scotland, where energy costs are a real issue, the insulating characteristics of a timber frame make a measurable effect, and that matters over time.

Repair not replace

Timber window deteriorates? Good news: you can fix it.

Rot in a sill? Remove it and put in fresh timber. Damaged part of frame? Replace in section. UPVC can’t do any of that. When it gives up, the whole unit goes to landfill and you’re starting from scratch.

Over the working life of a property, the option to repair and maintain timber windows rather than replacing them means genuine savings in both cost and material waste.

Timber and sustainability

All our timber is sourced from ethically managed forests.

Holds carbon as long as it works, then biodegrades naturally. No landfill, no harmful process. UPVC is plastic from oil, and aluminium production is extremely energy-intensive. The difference doesn’t need explaining.

Concerned about your property’s carbon impact? Timber. Obvious choice.

The appeal and value of timber windows

Weight. Depth. Grain. No man-made material can replicate it.

On a traditional sandstone tenement, a blonde stone villa, or a traditional Scottish cottage, timber windows look right in a way UPVC never quite manages. Worth considering if the look count to you.

And they bring real value to a property too, especially older properties where original or sympathetic features are part of what makes them the attraction.

Double-glazed timber windows

Sash or casement, it doesn’t matter. Every window that we produce has double-glazed sealed units fitted as standard. Always has.

The sealed unit sits within the timber frame, using two sheets of glass separated by a sealed cavity to reduce heat transfer and boost sound insulation.

Combined with the natural insulating properties of the timber frame, a double-glazed timber window achieves excellent thermal and acoustic performance across both sash and casement types.

Need glazing bars for a traditional divided-light look? We can add those too.

The frames are in good shape, they’re just single glazed. In many cases, we can convert to double glazing as part of a restoration programme, preserving what’s worth keeping, boosting thermal performance, no full replacement required.

Maryhill’s older properties bring up this request all the time. Solid existing sash windows, but single glazing that allows in cold air and ambient noise like it isn’t there.

Every unit we install: satisfies current building regulations for thermal standards.

Timber windows for conservation areas

More than 600 conservation areas throughout Scotland. The odds are yours is one of them.

Where a property is located in one of these areas, UPVC is not an permitted window material, and the local council authority will likely require replacements to match the existing window in material, design, and profile.

We’ve been manufacturing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings across Scotland for over 20 years, so we understand what the council expects, no surprises.

We can walk you through consent conditions and build windows that satisfy planning condition while delivering modern performance. If you want more on the regulations, our sash and case windows page covers them in detail.

Timber choices

Two timber types. That’s what we work with across the entire window range.

The most common choice is treated pine. It’s pressure-treated to prevent rot and decay, accepts a paint finish well, and holds up well in Maryhill’s rain-heavy weather.

For properties where a natural timber look is preferred, or where added durability is called for, we offer hardwood, which is inherently more immune to deterioration and takes stains and oils with excellent results.

Property, exposure, finish, three things we look at before recommending the right timber for each job. Get those right and the rest follows.

Timber windows FAQ

What styles of timber windows do you make?

We manufacture both sash and case windows and casement windows, offered in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case windows are the traditional Maryhill style, working by moving up and down within a box frame. Casement windows are hinged and open outward. We also produce fixed window panels to suit any window opening configuration.

Timber windows vs UPVC, which is better?

For performance, longevity, and looks? Yes, timber is the better choice. It insulates more effectively at the equivalent frame width, lasts a lot longer when maintained, and can be restored rather than replaced. It’s also the sole material accepted for listed buildings and is highly preferred in conservation areas.

Can you upgrade single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?

In many cases, yes. Sound existing frames? We upgrade the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. Original frames stay, thermal and acoustic performance gets better.
