Timber Windows Maddiston

Woodfellas. Maddiston-based timber window experts. We manufacture, renovate, and install timber windows from our Maddiston base, covering homes and business properties across Central Scotland.

Every window we build is custom-built from sustainably sourced treated pine or hardwood timber, with double glazing and upgraded security included as standard.

Tenement, extension, any property. Sash and case, casement, or a full replacement set: we build ourselves and put them in ourselves.

Wooden windows we make

We manufacture two primary types of timber window, each designed for different properties and specifications. Both are made in treated pine or hardwood, and both include double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash windows

Scotland’s classic window design.

Slide vertically. Timber box frame. Weighted cords and pulleys. That’s a sash window. They’re on most of Maddiston’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements and the required replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.

We restore, repair, and make custom sash windows designed to match existing profiles and proportions. The result is modern thermal and acoustic performance in a window that fits right in.

Restoration typically means draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades. Smartest call where existing frames are in good condition. We inspect everything before recommending replacement.

Hinged casement windows

Hinged. Swing out to open. Larger opening, easier access from inside. Common on Maddiston properties built from the 1920s on, including extensions, dormers, and new builds.

We make custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed styles. Just like our sash windows, every casement is made to measure and double glazed as standard, no exceptions.

Our timber casement windows section covers all available designs and configurations in complete detail.

Why timber windows make sense

Centuries of timber windows, and they’re not still around out of habit. Timber genuinely outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that matter to property owners. The numbers say it all.

Natural insulation

Timber carries heat far less readily than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at comparable frame widths. This translates to superior thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before the double glazing is even factored in.

Scotland runs on heating bills. A timber frame’s thermal qualities make a measurable impact to what you spend, and that difference adds up over the years.

Repair not replace

Timber window deteriorates? Good news: you can repair it.

Rot in a sill, fresh timber goes in. Damaged frame part, it gets repaired. The story with UPVC is not the same: no repair option, so when it fails, the entire unit ends up in landfill and you’re back at the beginning.

Over a property’s lifetime: repair and maintain, not replace. Saves cost. Reduces material waste.

Sustainability

Every length of timber we work with is sourced from ethically managed forest.

Locks in carbon as long as it works, then breaks down naturally. No landfill, no toxic process. UPVC is plastic from oil, and aluminium production is extremely carbon-heavy. The difference is clear.

If the environmental footprint of your house matters to you, timber is the clear choice. It’s as simple as that.

Character and value

Pick up a timber window sash and you notice it, substance, character, grain. No synthetic alternative can match that.

On a sandstone tenement, a pale stone villa, or a traditional Scottish cottage, timber windows produce an aesthetic fit that UPVC never quite manages.

And they add genuine value to a property, especially period properties where original or sympathetic features are part of the appeal.

Double-glazed timber windows

All windows manufactured by Woodfellas, whether sash or casement, include double-glazed sealed units fitted as standard.

Two sheets of glass. A cavity between them. The sealed unit fits inside the timber frame and manages the rest, reducing heat transfer, boosting sound insulation.

Combined with the inherent insulating characteristics of the timber frame, a double-glazed timber window delivers solid thermal and acoustic results across both sash and casement types.

Traditional divided-light look? We can fit glazing bars, a simple addition that makes a big difference.

The frames are in good shape, they’re just single glazed. In many cases, we can convert to double glazing as part of a restoration, preserving what’s worth keeping, boosting performance, no full replacement needed.

This is a frequent job on Maddiston’s older properties. The original sash windows are well-constructed, but the single glazing lets in cold and street noise, and upgrading to double glazing addresses both.

Every unit we install satisfies current building regulations for thermal standards. Always.

Timber windows and conservation areas and listed buildings

Scotland has more than 600 designated conservation areas, and if you’re in one, it makes a difference.

Property in a conservation area? UPVC: not approved. Council will likely require replacements replicating the original. Material, design, profile.

Having produced timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties across Scotland for over 20 years, we have developed a thorough understanding of council requirements.

We can walk you through consent requirements and build windows that meet planning condition while delivering modern standards. If you want more on the regulations, our sash and case windows page covers them in full detail.

Our timber choices

Two timber types, and that’s what we stock across all window product range.

Treated pine represents the most popular option. It is pressure-treated to ward off rot and decay, accepts a paint finish readily, and holds up well in Maddiston’s wet climate.

If you want a natural timber look, or if you need something harder-wearing, hardwood is the one, it’s naturally more immune to deterioration and it takes stains and oils beautifully.

Not sure which timber to choose? We help you choose the right option for each project based on the property, the exposure level, and the finish you want.

Timber windows FAQ

What types of timber windows do you manufacture?

We make sash and case windows and casement windows, both offered in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case: the traditional Maddiston style, sliding vertically in a box frame. Casements: hinged, open outward. Fixed panels available too, for any window opening configuration.

Are timber windows better than UPVC?

For performance, longevity, and looks? Yes, timber wins. It insulates better at the comparable frame thickness, lasts considerably longer when looked after, and can be repaired not fully replaced. It’s also the only material accepted for listed buildings and strongly preferred in conservation areas.

Can you upgrade single glazing to double glazing in existing timber windows?

Many cases, yes. The existing frames are solid, so we upgrade the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. Original frames remain, appearance is preserved, and the thermal and acoustic performance gets better, without a full replacement.
