Woodfellas built our name in Lockerbie making timber windows, and that’s still what we do. We produce, restore, and fit timber windows from our Lockerbie workshop, serving residential properties and commercial properties right across Central Scotland.
Every window we produce is made to measure from responsibly sourced treated pine or hardwood timber, with double glazing and improved security included as standard.
Sash and case for a tenement, casements for a contemporary extension, or a full set of new windows for whatever kind of property you’ve got, we make them all ourselves and put them in ourselves.
What timber windows we make
Two main types of timber window, each built for different properties and needs. Both made in treated pine or hardwood, and both feature double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Sash windows
The traditional window type for Scottish properties.
Move up and down. Timber box frame. Weighted cords and pulleys. That’s a sash window. They’re on most of Lockerbie’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements and the required replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.
We refurbish, sort, and manufacture custom sash windows that replicate existing profiles and proportions while delivering modern thermal and acoustic results.
Restoration usually covers draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, and it’s the most sensible call where the original frames are sound. We complete full inspections before recommending any replacement.

Casement windows
Casement windows swing outward on hinges, creating a wider opening for ventilation and making window cleaning easier from inside. They’re the standard choice on Lockerbie properties going back from the 1920s onwards, as well as extensions, dormers, and newer builds.
We build custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed setups, so whatever setup you need, we can deliver it. And like our sash windows, every casement is made to measure and fitted with double glazing as standard.
All the styles, all the choices, it’s on our timber casement windows section.
Why choose timber for your windows
Hundreds of years of timber windows, and they’re not still around out of habit. Timber truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that matter to homeowners. The record speak for themselves.
Natural insulating qualities
Timber transfers heat far less quickly than aluminium. Outperforms UPVC at the same frame widths. Better thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before the double glazing even comes into it.
Scotland. Cold. Expensive to heat. A timber frame’s thermal qualities make a measurable effect.
Repair, don’t replace
Where wear appears in a timber window, restoration remains a practical option.
Got rot in a sill? You cut it out and splice in fresh timber. Damaged section of frame? Repair. With UPVC, you can’t do that. When it goes, the entire thing goes to landfill and you’re starting over.
Over a property’s working life: repair and maintain, not replace. Saves money. Cuts waste.
Environmental credentials
We source all our timber from ethically managed woodland, so you can know it’s responsibly produced.
Timber is a replenishable resource that stores carbon for its entire lifespan and biodegrades cleanly at end of life. UPVC is a oil-derived plastic, and aluminium manufacturing is highly energy-intensive.
If you care about the environmental impact of your home, timber is the clear option.
Timber windows, character and value
Timber windows possess a weight, physical depth, and texture that no synthetic material can match.
Traditional sandstone tenement. Pale stone villa. Traditional Scottish cottage. Timber windows fit. UPVC never quite manages.
Timber windows also contribute real value to a property, especially older properties where original or sympathetic features constitute part of the overall appeal.
Double glazed timber windows
Every window we build, sash or casement, features double-glazed sealed units fitted. No extras required.
The sealed unit sits inside the timber frame: it’s two panes of glass with a cavity between them, which cuts down on heat transfer and lifts sound insulation.
Timber frame. Double glazing. Combined: strong thermal and acoustic results across both window types.
Need glazing bars for a traditional divided-light look? We can install those as well.
Where older timber windows are structurally sound but only single glazed, we can often switch them to double glazing as part of a restoration, keeping the original frames and lifting performance without necessitating a full replacement.
Lockerbie’s older properties throw up this situation all the time. Solid original sash windows, but single glazing that lets in cold and street noise like it isn’t there.
Every unit we install satisfies current building regulations for thermal standards. That’s guaranteed.

Timber windows and conservation areas
There are more than 600 conservation areas across Scotland, a significant total.
Where a property falls within one of these areas, UPVC is not an approved window material, and the local planning authority may require replacements to mirror the original window in material, design, and profile.
Twenty years of manufacturing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland. The council requirements? We’ve been through all of it. We know what’s expected.
Consent conditions, planning conditions, modern performance, we handle it all. And our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more detail for anyone who wants to know more.
Timber types
Two timber types, and that’s what we stock across all window range.
Treated pine: most chosen option. Pressure-treated against rot and decay. Holds paint well. Works well in Lockerbie’s wet climate.
Want a natural timber look or need extra durability? Hardwood is what you need, naturally more immune to damage, and it accepts stains and oils beautifully.
Property, exposure, finish, three things we look at before advising on the right timber for each job. Get those right and the rest follows.
Common questions about timber windows
What styles of timber windows do you offer?
We make sash and case windows and casement windows, both made in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Lockerbie design, moving up and down within a timber box frame. Casement windows open outward. We also build fixed window panels for any opening configuration.
Are timber a better choice than UPVC?
For performance, longevity, and appearance? Yes, timber is better. It insulates better at the equivalent frame width, lasts considerably longer when maintained, and can be restored rather than fully replaced. It’s also the sole material accepted for listed buildings and is greatly preferred in conservation areas.
Is it possible to upgrade single glazing in timber windows?
In a significant number of cases, yes. Where existing timber frames are in solid condition, we can upgrade the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. This keeps the original frames and appearance while boosting thermal and acoustic performance.
