If you need timber windows done properly in Lochwinnoch, Woodfellas are who you want. We make, restore, and fit wooden windows out of our Lochwinnoch base, serving homes and commercial properties throughout Central Scotland.
Every window we build is built to order from ethically sourced treated pine or hardwood timber, with double glazing and improved security installed as standard.
Sash and case for a tenement? Casements for a new extension? A complete replacement set for any property? We build them all in-house and install ourselves.
Our timber window range
Two types. Two sets of requirements. We produce one for older properties, one for modern ones, but both are offered in treated pine or hardwood, and both feature double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Sash windows
The traditional window design for Scottish properties.
Slide up and down. Timber box frame. Weighted cords and pulleys. That’s a sash window. They’re on most of Lochwinnoch’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements and the only permitted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.
We refurbish, repair, and produce custom sash windows. Original profiles. Original proportions. Modern thermal and acoustic results.
Restoration usually covers draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, and it’s the most sensible option where the original frames are sound. We do full surveys before recommending replacement.

Hinged windows
Casement windows swing out on hinges, creating a wider opening for fresh air and making window cleaning simple from inside. They’re the typical option on Lochwinnoch properties going back from the 1920s onwards, as well as rear extensions, dormers, and new builds.
Side hung, top hung, fixed, we produce custom timber casement windows in all three configurations. Like our sash windows, every single one is custom-built and double glazed as standard.
Our timber casement windows page has more information on all listed designs and options.
Why timber windows are the right choice
Timber windows have been around for generations, and there’s a reason they’ve stayed the go-to. It’s not just tradition, timber actually outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that matter to homeowners.
How timber insulates naturally
The frame counts, not just the glass. Timber conducts heat far less quickly than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at the comparable frame thickness, giving stronger thermal performance from the frame itself, before the double glazing even factors in.
Scotland depends on central heating. A timber frame’s thermal properties make a measurable difference to what you spend, and that difference adds up over the years.
Repair, don’t replace
Where damage develops in a timber window, restoration remains a practical choice.
Rot in a sill or bottom rail? Remove it, splice in fresh timber. Damaged frame part? Rebuild it. UPVC can’t be repaired: it goes, it ends up in landfill, you start again.
Over the lifespan of a property, the option to maintain and repair timber windows rather than carrying out full replacement means real savings in both money and material waste.
Sustainability
All our timber comes from ethically managed forests.
Timber is a natural material, it stores carbon as it works and breaks down cleanly when it’s done. UPVC is plastic based on oil, and aluminium production takes a significant amount of power.
Concerned about your home’s carbon impact? Timber. Obvious choice.
Aesthetics and value
Timber windows have a weight, character, and natural grain that no man-made alternative can reproduce.
Traditional sandstone tenement. Blonde stone villa. Period Scottish cottage. Timber windows look right. UPVC never quite manages.
And they bring tangible value to a property too, especially older properties where period features are part of the appeal.
Timber windows with double glazing
Sash or casement. Every window. Double-glazed sealed units included as standard.
The sealed unit is housed within the timber frame and uses two sheets of glass with a sealed cavity. The effect is lower heat transfer and improved sound insulation.
Combine the timber frame’s inherent insulating qualities with double glazing and you get excellent thermal and acoustic results across both window styles.
Need a traditional divided-light look? We install glazing bars.
If your older timber windows are still structurally sound but single glazed, we can in many cases switch them to double glazing as part of a restoration. This keeps the existing frames and boosts thermal performance without a full replacement.
This represents a common project on Lochwinnoch’s older properties, where well-constructed original sash windows are solid but single glazing admits cold and ambient noise.
Every sealed unit we fit satisfies current building regulations governing thermal performance.

Listed buildings timber windows
Scotland has more than 600 recognised conservation areas, and if you’re in one, it matters.
Conservation area, and your windows need replacing? UPVC is not an acceptable material, your local council may require replacements that match the original in material, design, and profile. It’s a firm requirement.
We’ve been manufacturing timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties throughout Scotland for over 20 years. We know what the council expects, so you don’t have to figure it out yourself.
We can walk you through consent conditions and manufacture windows meeting every planning condition while achieving modern thermal standards. Our sash and case windows page covers the applicable regulations in greater detail.
Timber types
Two timber types. That’s what we use across all window product range.
Treated pine is the most popular choice, and for good reasons. It’s pressure-treated to resist rot and decay, accepts a paint finish well, and performs well in Lochwinnoch’s rain-heavy conditions.
For properties where a natural timber finish is wanted, or where additional longevity is required, we offer hardwood, which is inherently more resistant to damage and accepts stains and oils beautifully.
Not sure which timber to go for? We advise on the right option for each project based on the property, the exposure, and the finish you have in mind.
Timber windows, frequently asked questions
What kinds of timber windows do you offer?
We make sash and case windows and casement windows, both made in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Lochwinnoch style, sliding up and down within a timber box frame. Casement windows are hinged and open out. We also produce fixed window panels to match any opening setup.
Timber or UPVC, which is the better window?
For performance, longevity, and looks? Yes, timber wins. It insulates better at the equivalent frame thickness, lasts a lot longer when looked after, and can be fixed not replaced. It’s also the only material accepted for listed buildings and strongly preferred in conservation areas.
Can existing timber windows be converted to double glazing?
In many cases, yes. If your current timber frames are in sound condition, we can upgrade the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. The result is better thermal and acoustic performance while retaining the existing frames and character.
