Timber Windows Locharbriggs

Locharbriggs has its own timber window specialists and we’re called Woodfellas. We produce, restore, and put in wooden windows from our base, serving homes and business properties across Central Scotland.

Each window is built to order using ethically sourced treated pine or hardwood timber. Double glazing and enhanced security are included as standard on every window.

Whether you need sash and case windows for a Victorian tenement, casement windows for a contemporary extension, or a full set of replacement windows for any sort of property, we make them in-house and install ourselves.

Our timber windows

We produce two primary types of timber window, one right for older properties, one right for newer ones. Both are made in treated pine or hardwood, and both come with double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash windows

The traditional Scottish window, and it hasn’t changed.

Sash windows work on a pretty clever system: they slide up and down in a timber box frame using weighted cords and pulleys. You’ll find them on most of Locharbriggs’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements, and if you’ve got a listed property or conservation area property, they’re the only accepted replacement where sash and case was the original design.

The finest sash windows should look exactly like the original. We renovate, repair, and manufacture custom ones mirroring existing profiles and proportions, while achieving modern thermal and acoustic standards where it matters.

The original frames are in good shape, so why swap them? Restoration, draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, is usually the better call. We complete full assessments first, before we recommend replacement.

Casement windows

The hinged window. Opens out, lets in a wider flow of air, easy to clean from inside with no fuss. Casement windows became the norm on Locharbriggs properties from the 1920s on, including rear extensions, dormers, and newer builds.

We produce custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed setups, so whatever configuration you need, we can make it. And like our sash windows, every casement is custom-built and double glazed as standard.

Why timber works best for windows

There’s a good reason people have been installing timber windows in properties for generations, and it’s not just because they always have. Timber truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that make a difference to households.

Natural insulating qualities

Here’s something that trips up people: timber actually carries heat far less easily than aluminium, and it outperforms UPVC at the same frame thickness. That means the frame itself is already doing more thermal work before you even consider the double glazing.

In Scotland, heating bills are a real challenge. The insulating properties of a timber frame make a measurable effect to what you spend on heating, and it’s worth bearing in mind.

Repair, don’t replace

Things get damaged. With timber, that’s not the end of the story. You can sort it.

Rot in a sill or bottom rail can be cut out and fresh timber fitted in its stead. A damaged part of frame can be rebuilt. UPVC offers no such alternative: when it fails, the whole unit ends up in landfill and the process starts from scratch.

Think about it: over the lifetime of a property, being able to repair and maintain timber windows rather than replacing them saves serious cost and reduces a lot of material waste.

Sustainability

The timber we use is sourced from sustainably managed forests, every bit of it.

Timber: renewable. Locks in carbon. Decomposes naturally. UPVC: plastic from oil. Aluminium production: highly carbon-heavy.

Your property’s carbon footprint matters to you? Then timber is the obvious option. It always has been.

Timber windows, character and value

Weight. Depth. Grain. No artificial alternative can replicate it.

Traditional sandstone tenement. Blonde stone villa. Period Scottish cottage. Timber windows look right. UPVC never quite manages.

And they add tangible value to a property, especially period homes where period features are part of the appeal.

Double glazing in timber windows

Whether sash or casement, all the windows we make feature double-glazed sealed units fitted. It’s always included.

Sealed unit in the frame. Two layers of glass. Cavity between them. Reduces heat transfer. Lifts sound insulation.

Combine the timber frame’s inherent thermal properties with double glazing and you get solid thermal and acoustic performance across both window styles.

We can also install glazing bars if your property needs a traditional divided-light look.

If your older timber windows are still in good condition but single glazed, we can often upgrade them to double glazing as part of a restoration programme. This retains the original frames and improves performance without a full replacement.

This represents a frequent request on Locharbriggs’s older properties, where well-built existing sash windows are well-built but single glazing lets in cold and road noise.

Every unit we fit: meets the latest building regulations for thermal performance.

Timber windows for conservation areas

Over 600 conservation areas throughout Scotland. The odds are yours is one of them.

Property in a conservation area? UPVC: not acceptable. Council will likely require replacements replicating the original. Material, design, profile.

Over 20 years producing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland, we know what the council expects.

We walk you through consent requirements. We produce windows that tick every planning condition. Modern performance guaranteed. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more detail.

Wood options

Woodfellas stocks two types of timber across its entire window product range.

Most customers choose treated pine. It’s pressure-treated to prevent rot and decay, takes a paint finish really well, and holds up in Locharbriggs’s damp climate with no trouble.

For properties where a natural timber finish is desired, or where additional longevity is called for, we offer hardwood, which is inherently more immune to deterioration and takes stains and oils beautifully.

Not sure which timber to choose? We recommend the right timber for each job based on the property, the exposure level, and the finish you have in mind.

Timber windows FAQ

What types of timber windows do you make?

We make sash and case windows and casement windows, both made in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Locharbriggs design, sliding up and down within a box frame. Casement windows are hinged and open out. We also make fixed window panels to suit any window opening configuration.

Are timber windows worth it over UPVC?

Yes, for results, lifespan, and appearance, timber is the better choice. It insulates more effectively at the same frame thickness, lasts significantly longer when maintained, and can be restored rather than fully replaced. It’s also the sole material accepted for listed buildings and is highly preferred in conservation areas.

Is it possible to upgrade single glazing in timber windows?

In many cases, yes. If your current timber frames are in good condition, we can switch the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. The outcome is improved thermal and acoustic results while retaining the existing frames and look.
