Timber Windows Linwood

Woodfellas made our name in Linwood making timber windows, and that’s still what we do. We manufacture, refurbish, and fit wooden windows from our Linwood workshop, serving residential properties and businesses right across Central Scotland.

Custom-built, sustainably sourced timber, double glazing, improved security. Every window that leaves our workshop is built the same way. No shortcuts.

Sash and case for a tenement? Casements for a new extension? A full replacement set for any property? We produce them all ourselves and fit ourselves.

Our timber window lineup

Two types of timber window. Each built for different properties and needs. Both available in treated pine or hardwood. Both featuring double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Classic sash windows

Scotland’s traditional window design.

Move vertically. Timber box frame. Weighted cords and pulleys. That’s a sash window. They’re on most of Linwood’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements and the only replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.

We restore, repair, and make custom sash windows that precisely match existing profiles and proportions while giving you modern thermal and acoustic performance.

If your original frames are in good condition, restoration, draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, is often the smartest option. We do full inspections before recommending replacement, so you always know where you stand.

Casement windows

Casement windows are the hinged type: they swing outward to open, which gives you a wider opening for ventilation and means you can reach them easily from inside. They’re all over Linwood properties dating from the 1920s on, and they’re the usual choice for rear extensions, dormers, and new builds.

Side hung, top hung, fixed, we produce custom timber casement windows in all three setups. Like our sash windows, every single one is made to measure and double glazed as standard.

Our timber casement windows section covers all listed designs and choices in full detail.

Why timber windows are the right choice

Timber’s long-standing position as the preferred window material is not just a matter of tradition. It truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in several areas that make a difference to households.

How timber insulates naturally

Timber transfers heat far less easily than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at comparable frame widths. The outcome is better thermal efficiency from the frame itself, and that’s before the double glazing comes into it.

In a country like Scotland, where heating bills represent a real concern for homeowners, the insulating properties of a timber frame make a tangible effect.

Repair, don’t replace

Wear sets in. With timber, that’s not the end of the story. You can fix it.

Rot in a sill or bottom rail? Remove it, put in new timber. Damaged frame section? Rebuild it. UPVC can’t be repaired: it breaks, it goes to landfill, you start again.

Think about it: over the life of a property, being able to maintain and repair timber windows rather than replacing them cuts serious cost and cuts a lot of waste.

Environmental sustainability

The timber we use comes from responsibly managed woodland, every bit of it.

Timber stores carbon and breaks down naturally, it’s a sustainable material. UPVC is plastic derived from oil, and aluminium production is highly carbon-heavy.

If the carbon impact of your property is important to you, timber is clearly the better option. It’s straightforward.

Look and value

Pick up a timber window sash and you feel it, substance, depth, texture. No man-made alternative can copy that.

Traditional sandstone tenement. Blonde stone villa. Traditional Scottish cottage. Put timber windows in and they look right. Put UPVC in and something’s slightly wrong, it just can’t that same rightness.

They bring genuine property value too. Especially period homes. Period features count to potential buyers.

Double-glazed timber windows

Every single window we manufacture, sash or casement, features double-glazed sealed units included as standard. Always.

The sealed unit is housed inside the timber frame, two layers of glass with a sealed cavity between them, reducing heat transfer and boosting sound insulation.

The timber frame does its bit. The double glazing does its bit. Together they achieve strong thermal and acoustic performance across both styles, sash or casement, same result.

Traditional divided-light look? We can add glazing bars, a straightforward addition that makes a real visual difference.

Still in good shape but single glazed? We can in many cases upgrade to double glazing as part of a restoration programme, retaining the original frames, improving thermal performance, and skipping a full replacement.

Linwood’s older properties throw up this request all the time. Well-built existing sash windows, but single glazing that admits cold air and road noise like there’s nothing there.

Every unit we put in meets the latest building regulations for thermal standards. That’s guaranteed.

Timber windows for conservation areas

Scotland has over 600 officially recognised conservation areas, and being in one affects what you are permitted to do with your windows.

Where a property is located in one of these areas, UPVC is not an permitted window material, and the local planning authority will often require replacements to mirror the original design in material, design, and profile.

We’ve been producing timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties across Scotland for over 20 years. We understand what the council requires, so you don’t have to figure it out yourself.

We walk you through consent conditions. We build windows that satisfy planning condition. Modern standards guaranteed. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more detail.

Timber choices

Across all our window products, we stock two types of timber.

Treated pine is what most people go for, pressure-treated to resist rot and decay, accepts a paint finish well, and handles Linwood’s rain-heavy weather with no a problem.

For properties where a natural timber finish is desired, or where extra strength is called for, we stock hardwood, which is by nature more resistant to deterioration and accepts stains and oils with excellent results.

We advise on the right timber for each job, based on the property, its exposure level, and the finish you want. Just ask and we’ll guide you.

Timber windows FAQ

Which wooden window types do you make?

We manufacture both sash and case windows and casement windows, offered in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case windows are the traditional Linwood design, working by sliding vertically within a box frame. Casement windows are hinged and open outward. We also produce fixed window panels to match any opening configuration.

Timber or UPVC, which is the better window?

Yes, for results, lifespan, and appearance, timber is the better choice. It insulates better at the comparable frame thickness, lasts considerably longer when looked after, and can be fixed rather than fully replaced. It’s also the sole material permitted for listed buildings and is highly preferred in conservation areas.

Upgrading single glazing to double glazing in timber windows, is it possible?

Most cases, yes. The current frames are good, so we convert the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. Existing frames stay, appearance is preserved, and the thermal and acoustic results gets better, without a full replacement.
