Timber Windows Lesmahagow

Woodfellas are the timber window team working out of Lesmahagow. We make, renovate, and put in timber windows from our Lesmahagow workshop, covering both houses and business properties across Central Scotland.

Every window that leaves our workshop is made to measure from sustainably sourced treated pine or hardwood, and double glazing and upgraded security are fitted as standard.

Whatever you need, sash and case for a tenement, casement for a contemporary extension, or a full new set for any sort of property, we make them ourselves and put them in ourselves.

Our timber window range

Two types of timber window. Each suited to different properties and needs. Both offered in treated pine or hardwood. Both with double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash windows

The traditional window style for Scottish properties.

Before UPVC, before aluminium, Lesmahagow’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements were built with sash windows, moving up and down in a box frame on weighted cords and pulleys. They’re still the required replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.

We renovate, sort, and build custom sash windows built to match existing profiles and proportions. The outcome is modern thermal and acoustic standards in a window that looks exactly as it should.

The original frames are solid, so why swap them? Restoration, draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, is usually the better option. We carry out full surveys first, before we ever recommend going further.

Traditional casement windows

Hinged. Open outward to open. Wider opening, easier cleaning from inside. Typical on Lesmahagow properties dating from the 1920s on, including rear extensions, dormers, and newer builds.

Side hung, top hung, fixed, we produce custom timber casement windows in all three setups. Like our sash windows, every single one is made to measure and double glazed as standard.

Wood windows, why they’re the best choice

Timber windows have been around for centuries, and there’s a good reason they’ve stayed the first choice. It’s not just tradition, timber genuinely outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that matter to homeowners.

How timber insulates naturally

Timber transfers heat far less quickly than aluminium. Outperforms UPVC at equivalent frame widths. Superior thermal performance from the frame itself, before the double glazing even factors in.

Scotland depends on central heating. A timber frame’s thermal qualities make a measurable difference to what you spend, and that difference adds up over time.

Repair not replace

Timber window damaged? You can repair it.

Rot in a sill can be removed and fresh timber put in its place. A damaged part of frame can be repaired and restored. UPVC offers no such option: when it fails, the entire unit goes to landfill and the process starts from scratch.

Year after year, look after rather than start over. Over the life of a property, that means real cost saved and a lot less material going to landfill.

The sustainable choice

The timber we use comes from responsibly managed forest, every bit of it.

Timber is a sustainable material, it holds carbon as it stands and decomposes cleanly when it’s done. UPVC is plastic based on oil, and aluminium manufacturing takes a enormous amount of power.

Your property’s carbon impact is important? Then timber is the obvious option. It always has been.

Timber windows, character and value

Weight. Depth. Grain. No synthetic material can copy it.

On a traditional sandstone tenement, a pale stone villa, or a traditional Scottish cottage, timber windows create an aesthetic fit that UPVC never quite manages.

Timber windows also bring genuine value to a property, particularly older properties where original or sympathetic features constitute part of the property’s appeal.

Double-glazed timber windows

All windows made by Woodfellas, whether sash or casement, feature double-glazed sealed units fitted as standard.

The sealed unit fits inside the timber frame, two panes of glass with a sealed cavity between them, limiting heat transfer and lifting sound insulation.

The timber frame does its bit. The double glazing does its bit. Together they give you excellent thermal and acoustic performance across both types, sash or casement, same result.

If your property needs a traditional divided-light appearance, we can add glazing bars, just ask.

The frames are in good shape, they’re just single glazed. In many cases, we can convert to double glazing as part of a restoration programme, keeping what’s worth keeping, improving thermal performance, no full replacement required.

It’s a particularly regular project on Lesmahagow’s older properties, well-built existing sash windows, but single glazing that lets in cold air and ambient noise. Readily fixed.

Building regulations for thermal standards? Every unit we fit satisfies them. No exceptions.

Conservation area timber windows

More than 600 conservation areas across Scotland. The chances are yours is one of them.

Conservation area, and your windows need attention? UPVC is not an approved material, your local council will often require replacements that mirror the original in material, design, and profile. It’s a firm requirement.

Over 20 years making timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland, we understand what the council requires.

We can walk you through consent requirements and manufacture windows that satisfy every planning condition while delivering modern performance. Our sash and case windows page covers the relevant regulations in greater detail.

Wood types we use

Two timber types, and that’s what we stock across the entire window range.

The most requested option is treated pine. It’s pressure-treated to resist rot and decay, holds a painted finish well, and holds up well in Lesmahagow’s damp conditions.

A natural timber finish, extra hardwearing performance, hardwood answers both. By nature more wear-resistant, and it accepts stains and oils beautifully.

We’ll tell you which timber is most appropriate for your job based on the property, the exposure level, and what finish you’re after.

Timber windows, your questions answered

Which timber window types do you make?

We produce both sash and case windows and casement windows, made in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case windows are the traditional Lesmahagow style, working by moving vertically within a box frame. Casement windows are hinged and swing outward. We also produce fixed window panels to match any window opening configuration.

Timber or UPVC, which is the better window?

On performance, longevity, and looks: yes. Timber insulates more effectively at the equivalent frame width, lasts considerably longer when maintained, and can be restored rather than replaced when damage happens. It’s also the only material accepted for listed buildings and is highly preferred in conservation areas.

Can you replace single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?

In most cases, yes. If your existing timber frames are in sound condition, we can switch the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. The outcome is better thermal and acoustic performance while preserving the original frames and look.
