If you need timber windows done right in Law, Woodfellas are the right choice. We make, renovate, and fit timber windows out of our Law workshop, working across houses and commercial clients throughout Central Scotland.
Every window we make is made to measure from sustainably sourced treated pine or hardwood timber, with double glazing and improved security installed as standard.
Whatever you need, sash and case for a tenement, casement for a contemporary extension, or a complete replacement set for any type of property, we produce them ourselves and fit ourselves.
Our range of timber windows
We make two primary types of timber window, each suited to different properties and requirements. Whichever you choose, both are made in treated pine or hardwood and both come with double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Traditional sash windows
Scotland’s original window style.
Move vertically. Box frame. Cords and counterbalance weights. That’s a sash window. They’re on most of Law’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements and the only permitted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.
Whether your sash windows need restoring, fixing, or replacing altogether, we produce custom ones that match the original profiles and proportions, while still giving you modern thermal and acoustic results.
Restoration typically means draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades. Smartest call where existing frames are sound. We survey fully before recommending any replacement.

Casement windows
Casement windows are hinged and swing out to open, creating a larger opening for fresh air and making cleaning from inside simple. They’re standard on Law properties dating from the 1920s onwards, as well as rear extensions, dormers, and newer builds.
We make custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed setups. Like our sash windows, every casement is built to order and double glazed as standard.
Our timber casement windows page covers all available designs and choices in full detail.
Why choose timber for your windows
Timber windows have been around for hundreds of years, and there’s a good reason they’ve stayed the first choice. It’s not just tradition, timber truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in a number of areas that count to households.
Timber’s insulating properties
Here’s something that surprises people: timber actually conducts heat far less easily than aluminium, and it outperforms UPVC at the comparable frame width. That means the frame itself is doing better thermal work before you even factor in the double glazing.
Scotland’s not exactly warm, and energy costs are no joke, so the fact that timber frames insulate better makes a real impact to what you pay.
Repair before replace
The key thing about timber windows is that if something gets damaged, you can fix it.
Got rot in a sill or bottom rail? You remove it and fit new timber. Damaged section of frame? Replace in section. With UPVC, you don’t have that option. When it fails, the whole thing ends up in landfill and you’re starting over.
Year after year, look after rather than start over. Over the life of a property, that adds up to real money saved and a lot less waste going to landfill.
Timber and sustainability
All timber used in our windows is obtained from ethically managed woodland.
Timber is a sustainable resource, it stores carbon as it works and decomposes cleanly when it’s done. UPVC is plastic derived from oil, and aluminium production takes a huge amount of energy.
If you care about the carbon footprint of your home, timber is the obvious option.
Character and value
Pick up a timber window sash and you notice it, weight, character, grain. No synthetic alternative can copy that.
On a sandstone tenement, a light stone villa, or a period Scottish cottage, timber windows fit right in a way UPVC never quite manages. Worth considering if the look matter to you.
They add genuine property value too. Especially older properties. Original or sympathetic features matter to buyers.
Double glazed timber windows
Every single window we manufacture, sash or casement, includes double-glazed sealed units installed as standard. Always.
The sealed unit is housed within the timber frame, employing two layers of glass separated by a cavity to limit heat transfer and boost sound insulation.
The timber frame does its bit. The double glazing does its bit. Together they give you excellent thermal and acoustic results across both types, sash or casement, same standard.
Traditional divided-light appearance? We can add glazing bars, a straightforward addition that makes a big visual difference.
If your older timber windows are still in good condition but single glazed, we can in many cases upgrade them to double glazing as part of a restoration. This keeps the existing frames and lifts performance without a full replacement.
It’s a very frequent job on Law’s older properties, well-constructed existing sash windows, but single glazing that allows in cold air and road noise. Easily fixed.
And every unit we fit complies with current building regulations for thermal standards, so you’re covered.

Timber windows and conservation areas and listed buildings
Scotland has over 600 officially recognised conservation areas, and being in one changes what you are permitted to do with your windows.
Where a property sits in one of these areas, UPVC is not an permitted window material, and the local planning authority will likely require replacements to replicate the original design in material, design, and profile.
Over 20 years producing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland, we know what the council expects.
We can walk you through consent requirements and build windows that tick every planning condition while giving you modern performance. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more depth.
Our timber options
Two timber types. That’s what we stock across the entire window product range.
Treated pine is what most people go for, pressure-treated to ward off rot and decay, takes a paint finish well, and handles Law’s wet climate without a problem.
Want a natural timber look? Need extra strength? Hardwood. By nature more resistant to deterioration. Takes stains and oils really well.
Not sure which timber to choose? We help you choose the right timber for each job based on the property, the exposure, and the finish you want.
FAQ, timber windows
Which wooden window types do you manufacture?
We manufacture both sash and case windows and casement windows, available in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case windows are the traditional Law style, working by moving up and down within a timber box frame. Casement windows are hinged and open outward. We also build fixed window panels to match any window opening configuration.
Are timber windows worth it over UPVC?
Three things: results, lifespan, looks. Timber wins on all three. Better insulation at the comparable frame thickness. Considerably longer lifespan when looked after. Repairable, not replaced. And it’s the sole material accepted for listed buildings, strongly preferred in conservation areas too.
Is it possible to replace single glazing in timber windows?
Most cases, yes. The existing frames are sound, so we switch the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. Original frames remain, character stays, and the thermal and acoustic performance improves, without a full replacement.
