Woodfellas are the timber window team working out of Langside. We make, refurbish, and install timber windows from our Langside premises, covering both residential properties and commercial properties across Central Scotland.
Not a single window leaves our workshop without being custom-built. Sustainably sourced treated pine or hardwood, double glazing, and enhanced security, all standard.
Sash and case for a tenement, casements for a modern extension, or a full set of replacement windows for whatever sort of property you’ve got, we make them all in-house and put them in ourselves.
Our timber windows
Two types. Two sets of requirements. We produce one for older properties, one for newer ones, but both are available in treated pine or hardwood, and both come with double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Sash window types
Scotland’s original window style.
Before UPVC, before aluminium, Langside’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements were fitted with sash windows, sliding vertically in a box frame on cords and counterbalance weights. They’re still the required replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.
Whether your sash windows need refurbishing, fixing, or replacing altogether, we produce custom ones that replicate the existing profiles and proportions, while still giving you modern thermal and acoustic performance.
A lot of the time, renovating the existing frames, draught-proofing and double glazing, is the smarter route if the frames themselves are still sound. We do a full assessment before recommending a replacement.

Hinged windows
Casement windows are hinged and swing outward to open, giving a wider opening for fresh air and making access from inside simple. They’re standard on Langside properties dating from the 1920s onwards, as well as rear extensions, dormers, and newer builds.
We produce custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed styles. Just like our sash windows, every casement is made to measure and fitted with double glazing as standard, no exceptions.
Our timber casement windows section has more detail on all available styles and choices.
Why timber is the right choice for windows
Hundreds of years of timber windows, and they’re not still around out of habit. Timber genuinely outperforms UPVC and aluminium in a number of areas that count to households. The numbers say it all.
Natural insulating qualities
The frame matters, not just the glass. Timber carries heat far less quickly than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at the equivalent frame width, giving stronger thermal performance from the frame itself, before the double glazing even factors in.
In a place like Scotland, where energy bills represent a real concern for most households, the thermal properties of a timber frame make a tangible effect.
Repair, don’t replace
Timber window gets damaged? You can fix it.
Rot in a sill or bottom rail can be taken out and fresh timber fitted in. A damaged section of frame can be repaired. UPVC can’t be repaired in the same way. When it breaks down, the entire unit goes to landfill and you start over.
Over a property’s lifetime: repair and maintain, not replace. Saves cost. Reduces waste.
Timber and the environment
Every length of timber we select is procured from ethically managed woodland, that’s non-negotiable.
Timber locks in carbon and decomposes cleanly, it’s a renewable material. UPVC is plastic derived from oil, and aluminium manufacturing is highly energy-intensive.
If the carbon impact of your home matters to you, timber is the clear option. It’s as straightforward as that.
Timber windows, character and value
Weight. Depth. Grain. No synthetic alternative can match it.
On a traditional sandstone tenement, a light stone villa, or a period Scottish cottage, timber windows look right in a way UPVC just can’t. Worth considering if aesthetics count to you.
And they bring tangible value to a property too, especially period properties where original or sympathetic features are part of what makes them the appeal.
Double glazed timber windows
Whether sash or casement, all the windows we manufacture include double-glazed sealed units as standard. It’s always fitted.
Sealed unit in the frame. Two layers of glass. Cavity between them. Cuts heat transfer. Improves sound insulation.
Timber frame. Double glazing. Combined: excellent thermal and acoustic performance across both window styles.
Need glazing bars for a traditional divided-light look? We can install those as well.
If your older timber windows are still in good condition but single glazed, we can in many cases convert them to double glazing as part of a restoration programme. This preserves the existing frames and improves performance without a full replacement.
It comes up a lot on Langside’s older properties, original sash windows that are well-built, but the single glazing lets in cold and ambient noise like it’s not even there.
And every unit we fit meets the latest building regulations for thermal performance, so you’re covered.

Conservation area timber windows
Scotland has over 600 officially recognised conservation areas.
If your property is in one of these areas, UPVC is not an acceptable window material, and your local council may well require replacements that match the original in material, design, and profile.
We’ve been manufacturing timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties across Scotland for over 20 years. We understand what the council requires, so you don’t have to figure it out yourself.
We can walk you through consent requirements and make windows that tick every planning condition while still giving you modern standards. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more detail if you want to read up.
Timber choices
We use two timber types across all window product range, here’s what you need to know about each.
Treated pine is the most frequently chosen choice. It is pressure-treated to resist rot and decay, holds a paint finish readily, and performs well in Langside’s rain-heavy climate.
If a natural timber look is preferred, or if extra longevity is needed, hardwood is the option. It’s inherently more resistant to wear and accepts stains and oils beautifully.
We’ll advise on which timber is most appropriate for your project based on the property, the exposure, and what look you’re after.
Timber windows FAQ
What types of timber windows do you make?
We produce sash and case windows and casement windows, both available in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case: the traditional Langside design, moving up and down in a box frame. Casements: hinged, open out. Fixed panels made too, for any opening configuration.
Are timber windows better than UPVC?
On results, lifespan, and appearance: yes. Timber insulates better at the same frame width, lasts considerably longer when looked after, and can be repaired rather than replaced when damage occurs. It’s also the sole material permitted for listed buildings and is greatly preferred in conservation areas.
Can I replace single glazing to double glazing in existing timber windows?
In most cases, yes. Good current frames? We upgrade the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. Existing frames are preserved, thermal and acoustic performance improves.
