Timber Windows Lanark

Lanark has its own timber window makers and we’re called Woodfellas. We build, restore, and install wooden windows from our premises, serving homes and commercial properties all over Central Scotland.

Every window we build is made to measure from ethically sourced treated pine or hardwood timber, with double glazing and enhanced security fitted as standard.

Tenement, extension, any property. Sash and case, casement, or a complete replacement set: we build ourselves and fit ourselves.

What timber windows we offer

Two primary types of timber window, each built for different properties and specifications. Both made in treated pine or hardwood, and both feature double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash windows

Scotland’s classic window style.

Slide up and down. Box frame. Weighted cords and pulleys. That’s a sash window. They’re on most of Lanark’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements and the only permitted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.

We renovate, fix, and make custom sash windows designed to match original profiles and proportions. The outcome is modern thermal and acoustic results in a window that fits right in.

The existing frames are sound, so why swap them? Restoration, draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, is often the smarter option. We carry out full assessments first, before we recommend going further.

Casement windows

Casement windows swing outward on hinges, giving a wider opening for airflow and making cleaning straightforward from inside. They’re the typical choice on Lanark properties built from the 1920s onwards, as well as rear extensions, dormers, and new builds.

We make custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed styles. Like our sash windows, every casement is built to order and double glazed as standard.

Our timber casement windows page covers all available designs and options in full detail.

Why timber is the right choice

Timber windows have been around for hundreds of years, and there’s a reason they’ve stayed the first choice. It’s not just tradition, timber truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that count to homeowners.

Natural heat insulation

Did you know timber conducts heat far less readily than aluminium, and it outperforms UPVC at the same frame thickness? That means better thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before you even factor in the double glazing.

Scotland depends on central heating. A timber frame’s insulating properties make a real difference to what you pay, and that difference shows up over time.

Repair not replace

If a timber window is damaged, the good news is you can repair it.

Rot in a sill or bottom rail, fresh timber goes in. Damaged frame section, it gets rebuilt. The story with UPVC is not the same: no repair option, so when it goes, the entire unit goes to landfill and you’re back at the beginning.

Year after year, repair and maintain rather than start over. Over the life of a property, that means real money not spent and a lot less waste going to landfill.

Sustainability

Every bit of timber we work with comes from sustainably managed forests, that’s non-negotiable.

Timber: natural. Holds carbon. Breaks down cleanly. UPVC: plastic from oil. Aluminium production: extremely carbon-heavy.

Your home’s environmental impact matters to you? Then timber is the obvious option. It always has been.

The appeal and value of timber windows

There’s a weight, a depth, and a natural grain to timber windows that artificial materials simply can’t replicate.

Sandstone tenement. Pale stone villa. Period Scottish cottage. Put timber windows in and they look right. Put UPVC in and something’s slightly wrong, it never quite manages that same fit.

And they bring tangible value to a property too, especially period homes where period features are part of the attraction.

Double glazing in timber windows

All windows produced by Woodfellas, whether sash or casement, include double-glazed sealed units included as standard.

Two layers of glass. A cavity between them. The sealed unit sits inside the timber frame and handles the rest, limiting heat transfer, improving sound insulation.

The timber frame’s inherent thermal qualities combined with the double-glazed sealed unit achieve excellent thermal and acoustic performance across both window styles. That’s what you get as standard.

Need glazing bars for a traditional divided-light look? We can add those as well.

Got older timber windows that are still in good shape but only single glazed? In a lot of cases we can convert them to double glazing as part of a restoration programme, preserving the original frames and lifting performance without replacing everything.

Lanark’s older properties bring up this situation all the time. Well-constructed existing sash windows, but single glazing that allows in cold and ambient noise like it isn’t there.

And every unit we put in satisfies the latest building regulations for thermal performance, so no worries there.

Timber windows in conservation areas

Scotland: over 600 officially recognised conservation areas.

Property in a conservation area? UPVC: not acceptable. Council will often require replacements mirroring the original. Material, design, profile.

Over 20 years making timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland, we know exactly what the council expects.

Consent conditions, planning conditions, modern standards, we cover all of it. And our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more detail for anyone who wants to know more.

Wood choices

We stock two timber types across all window product range, here’s what you need to know about each.

The most requested option is treated pine. It’s pressure-treated to resist rot and decay, holds a paint finish well, and performs reliably in Lanark’s rain-heavy conditions.

Want a natural timber look or need extra durability? Hardwood is what you need, inherently more immune to wear, and it takes stains and oils so well.

Not sure which timber to pick? We advise on the right timber for each job based on the property, the exposure, and the finish you want.

FAQ, timber windows

What types of timber windows do you make?

We produce sash and case windows and casement windows, both offered in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Lanark design, moving up and down within a box frame. Casement windows are hinged and swing outward. We also build fixed window panels to match any window opening setup.

Are timber better than UPVC?

On performance, longevity, and appearance: yes. Timber insulates more effectively at the equivalent frame width, lasts considerably longer when maintained, and can be repaired rather than replaced when damage occurs. It’s also the sole material accepted for listed buildings and is greatly preferred in conservation areas.

Can you replace single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?

In most cases, yes. Solid current frames? We switch the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. Existing frames stay, thermal and acoustic results gets better.
