Timber Windows Kirkmuirhill

Woodfellas are the timber window experts operating from Kirkmuirhill. We make, renovate, and put in wooden windows from our Kirkmuirhill premises, covering both homes and business properties across Central Scotland.

Not a single window we make without being made to measure. Sustainably sourced treated pine or hardwood, double glazing, and upgraded security, all standard.

Sash and case for a tenement, casements for a modern extension, or a complete set of replacement windows for whatever type of property you’ve got, we produce them all in-house and put them in ourselves.

Our timber window range

We make two primary types of timber window, each built for different properties and specifications. Both are made in treated pine or hardwood, and both come with double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash window types

The traditional window type for Scottish properties.

Sash windows slide up and down within a timber box frame, using a system of weighted cords and pulleys doing the work. They’re the original window type on most of Kirkmuirhill’s period tenements, and the required replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.

The finest sash windows should look exactly like the original. We refurbish, repair, and manufacture custom ones matching existing profiles and proportions, while giving you modern thermal and acoustic performance where it matters.

Restoration usually includes draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades. Best option where original frames are in good condition. We assess fully before recommending replacement.

Outward-opening casement windows

Casement windows are hinged and swing outward to open, giving a larger opening for ventilation and making access from inside simple. They’re widespread on Kirkmuirhill properties dating from the 1920s onwards, as well as extensions, dormers, and new builds.

Side hung, top hung, fixed, three arrangements, all in custom timber. And like our sash windows, every casement we build is built to order and double glazed as standard.

Our timber casement windows section has more detail on all listed options and options.

Why timber is the right choice for windows

Timber has been the top window material for generations. Not just tradition, it truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in a number of areas that count to households.

Natural thermal performance

Did you know timber conducts heat far less quickly than aluminium, and it outperforms UPVC at the same frame thickness? That means better thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before you even factor in the double glazing.

Scotland depends on heating bills. A timber frame’s thermal characteristics make a measurable impact to what you spend, and that difference adds up over the years.

Repair it, don’t replace it

Timber window gets damaged? You can repair it.

Rot in a sill? Take it out and put in fresh timber. Damaged section of frame? Rebuild. UPVC isn’t repairable. When it fails, the whole unit goes to landfill and you’re back to square one.

Over the working life of a property, the option to maintain and repair timber windows rather than replacing them means genuine savings in both money and material waste.

Sustainability

Every length of timber we select is procured from sustainably managed forest, that’s non-negotiable.

Timber holds carbon and breaks down naturally, it’s a natural resource. UPVC is plastic derived from oil, and aluminium manufacturing is highly carbon-heavy.

If the environmental impact of your house is important to you, timber is obviously the better option. It’s straightforward.

The appeal and value of timber windows

The substance, character, and natural texture of timber windows is what no synthetic alternative can replicate.

Traditional sandstone tenement. Light stone villa. Period Scottish cottage. Timber windows fit. UPVC never quite manages.

And they bring real value to a property, especially older properties where period features are what buyers look for.

Double-glazed timber windows

Every window we build, sash or casement, includes double-glazed sealed units as standard. No extras needed.

The sealed unit is housed within the timber frame and works with two panes of glass with a cavity. The result is lower heat transfer and improved sound insulation.

Combined with the natural thermal properties of the timber frame, a double-glazed timber window gives you solid thermal and acoustic performance across both sash and casement types.

Need a traditional divided-light look? We install glazing bars.

Older frames. Single glazed. Still in good shape? We can often upgrade to double glazing as part of a restoration. Original frames are preserved. Performance improves. No full replacement.

It’s a particularly common request on Kirkmuirhill’s older properties, well-built existing sash windows, but single glazing that lets in cold air and ambient noise. Easily fixed.

Every unit we put in complies with the latest building regulations for thermal performance. Always.

Timber windows for conservation areas

Over 600 conservation areas throughout Scotland. The chances are yours is one of them.

In a conservation area? UPVC is not an permitted window material, and your local council may require replacements that match the original in material, design, and profile.

Over 20 years manufacturing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland, we know what the council requires.

Consent conditions, planning conditions, modern performance, we cover all of it. And our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more depth for anyone who wants to know more.

Wood options

Two timber types. That’s it. We work with both for the entire window product range.

The most common choice is treated pine. It’s pressure-treated to prevent rot and decay, accepts a paint finish well, and performs well in Kirkmuirhill’s wet conditions.

Want a natural timber look? Need extra durability? Hardwood. Inherently more immune to damage. Takes stains and oils beautifully.

We’ll recommend which timber is right for your job based on the property, the exposure level, and what look you’re after.

Wooden windows, frequently asked questions

What timber windows can you make?

We make both sash and case windows and casement windows, made in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case windows are the traditional Kirkmuirhill style, working by moving up and down within a box frame. Casement windows are hinged and swing outward. We also build fixed window panels to suit any opening configuration.

Timber windows vs UPVC, which is better?

For performance, longevity, and appearance? Yes, timber wins. It insulates better at the equivalent frame width, lasts a lot longer when maintained, and can be fixed not replaced. It’s also the only material permitted for listed buildings and greatly preferred in conservation areas.

Can you replace single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?

Many cases, yes. The existing frames are good, so we upgrade the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. Existing frames stay, appearance is preserved, and the thermal and acoustic performance improves, without a full replacement.
