Timber Windows Kirkintilloch

Kirkintilloch has its own timber window makers and we’re called Woodfellas. We make, restore, and install timber windows from our premises, working across houses and commercial properties across Central Scotland.

Every window that we produce is custom-built from sustainably sourced treated pine or hardwood, and double glazing and upgraded security are included as standard.

Whether you need sash and case windows for a period tenement, casement windows for a newer extension, or a complete set of replacement windows for any sort of property, we build them in-house and fit ourselves.

Our range of timber windows

We produce two primary types of timber window, each designed for different properties and specifications. Both are available in treated pine or hardwood, and both come with double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash windows

The traditional window style for Scottish properties.

Sash windows operate by sliding vertically within a box frame, using a system of cords and counterbalance weights. They are the historic window type on most of Kirkintilloch’s period tenements, and they’re the only accepted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.

We refurbish, repair, and manufacture custom sash windows that replicate the existing profiles and proportions while giving you modern thermal and acoustic performance.

A lot of the time, renovating the original frames, draught-proofing and double glazing, is the more sensible option if the frames themselves are still sound. We do a full assessment before recommending full replacement.

Standard casement windows

The hinged window. Opens out, lets in a wider flow of air, easy to clean from inside with no fuss. Casement windows became standard on Kirkintilloch properties from the 1920s on, including extensions, dormers, and new builds.

We produce custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed setups, so whatever style you need, we can do it. And like our sash windows, every casement is built to your size and double glazed as standard.

Wood windows, why they’re the best choice

Timber’s long-standing position as the preferred window material is not simply a matter of tradition. It truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in a number of areas that make a difference to property owners.

How timber insulates naturally

Did you know timber conducts heat far less readily than aluminium, and it outperforms UPVC at the comparable frame thickness? That means better thermal performance from the frame itself, before you even add the double glazing.

In Scotland, heating bills are a real concern. The insulating characteristics of a timber frame make a tangible impact to those costs, and it’s worth knowing.

Timber windows, fix before replace

Timber window takes a knock? Good news: you can fix it.

Rot in a sill or bottom rail? Take it out, fit fresh timber. Damaged frame part? Rebuild it. UPVC isn’t repairable: it fails, it goes to landfill, you start again.

Over a property’s working life: repair and maintain, not replace. Cuts cost. Reduces material waste.

Sustainability

Every bit of timber we work with is procured from ethically managed woodland, that’s non-negotiable.

Timber is a replenishable material that stores carbon throughout its working life and biodegrades naturally at end of life. UPVC is a oil-derived plastic, and aluminium production is extremely carbon-heavy.

For people for whom the environmental impact of their home is a consideration, timber represents the clear option.

The appeal and value of timber windows

Weight. Depth. Grain. No artificial material can copy it.

On a sandstone tenement, a pale stone villa, or a period Scottish cottage, timber windows just look right in a way that UPVC never quite manages.

They add real property value too. Especially older properties. Original or sympathetic features count to potential buyers.

Double glazing in timber windows

Every window we make, sash or casement, includes double-glazed sealed units as standard. No extras needed.

The sealed unit fits inside the timber frame, two panes of glass with a sealed cavity between them, cutting heat transfer and lifting sound insulation.

Combine the timber frame’s inherent insulating characteristics with double glazing and you get strong thermal and acoustic performance across both window styles.

If your property calls for a traditional divided-light appearance, we can add glazing bars, just ask.

Got older timber windows that are still sound but only single glazed? In many cases we can upgrade them to double glazing as part of a restoration, preserving the existing frames and boosting performance without replacing everything.

Regular request on Kirkintilloch’s older properties. Existing sash windows: well-constructed. Single glazing: admits cold air and ambient noise.

Every unit we install: satisfies the latest building regulations for thermal standards.

Timber windows for conservation areas

Over 600 conservation areas across Scotland. The chances are yours is one of them.

Conservation area, and your windows need attention? UPVC is not an permitted material, your local council will often require replacements that match the original in material, design, and profile. It’s a strict requirement.

Having manufactured timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties across Scotland for over 20 years, we have a strong understanding of council requirements.

Consent conditions, planning conditions, modern standards, we cover all of it. And our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more detail for anyone who wants to know more.

Timber types we work with

Two timber types. That’s it. We use both for the entire window range.

Treated pine is the most popular option, and for good reason. It’s pressure-treated to prevent rot and decay, holds a painted finish well, and holds up reliably in Kirkintilloch’s rain-heavy conditions.

If a natural timber look is preferred, or if extra longevity is required, hardwood is the option. It’s naturally more wear-resistant and accepts stains and oils very well.

Property, exposure, finish, three things we look at before helping you choose the right timber for each job. Get those right and the rest follows.

Wooden windows, frequently asked questions

What types of timber windows do you make?

We produce sash and case windows and casement windows, both made in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case: the traditional Kirkintilloch design, sliding vertically in a box frame. Casements: hinged, swing outward. Fixed panels made too, for any window opening setup.

Are timber windows better than UPVC?

Yes, for results, longevity, and looks, timber is better. It insulates more effectively at the comparable frame thickness, lasts significantly longer when maintained, and can be repaired rather than replaced. It’s also the only material accepted for listed buildings and is highly preferred in conservation areas.

Can you replace single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?

In many cases, yes! If your current frames are in good condition, we can convert to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration, keeping the original frames and appearance while boosting thermal and acoustic performance.
