Woodfellas are Kirkcudbright’s established timber window specialists, manufacturing, restoring, and installing timber windows from a Kirkcudbright premises that works across homes and business properties right across Central Scotland.
Made to measure, ethically sourced timber, double glazing, upgraded security. Every window we make is built the same way. No shortcuts.
Sash and case for a tenement, casements for a modern extension, or a full set of new windows for whatever type of property you’ve got, we make them all in-house and install ourselves.
Our timber window range
Two types. Two different requirements. We build one for older properties, one for modern ones, but both are available in treated pine or hardwood, and both feature double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Sash windows
The traditional window design for Scottish properties.
Sash windows work on a simple but clever system: they move up and down in a timber box frame using weighted cords and pulleys. You’ll see them on most of Kirkcudbright’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements, and if you’ve got a listed property or conservation area property, they’re the required replacement where sash and case was the existing design.
We renovate, fix, and produce custom sash windows. Period profiles. Existing proportions. Modern thermal and acoustic standards.
Here’s the thing: refurbishing your original frames with draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades is often the most sensible option if the frames are still in good shape. We always do a full survey before recommending replacement.

Casement windows
Casement windows open out on hinges, larger opening for ventilation, easy cleaning from inside. You’ll see them all over Kirkcudbright properties dating from the 1920s onwards, and on extensions, dormers, and newer builds.
We produce custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed configurations. Just like our sash windows, every casement is built to order and fitted with double glazing as standard, no exceptions.
For more on styles and options, our timber casement windows section has all the detail you need.
Why choose timber for your windows
Timber windows have been around for centuries, and there’s a good reason they’ve stayed the first choice. It’s not just tradition, timber genuinely outperforms UPVC and aluminium in a number of areas that make a difference to homeowners.
Natural insulation
Timber conducts heat far less quickly than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at comparable frame widths. The outcome is better thermal efficiency from the frame itself, and that’s before the double glazing factors in.
Scotland’s not exactly tropical, and energy costs are no joke, so the fact that timber frames keep heat in better makes a tangible difference to what you spend.
Repair before replace
Where deterioration appears in a timber window, remediation remains a realistic choice.
Rot in a sill can be cut out and fresh timber fitted in. A damaged part of frame can be repaired. UPVC can’t be repaired in the same way. When it breaks down, the whole unit ends up in landfill and you start again.
Over the lifetime of a property, looking after timber windows rather than going for full replacement cuts cost and cuts material waste. It’s a simple calculation.
Sustainability
All our timber comes from responsibly managed forest.
Timber is a natural material that sequesters carbon for its entire life and biodegrades cleanly at end of life. UPVC is a plastic made from oil, and aluminium production is extremely carbon-heavy, worth knowing if the environment matters to you.
If the environmental impact of your home matters to you, timber is the obvious option. It’s as straightforward as that.
Appeal and property value
Timber windows have a heft, character, and natural grain that no synthetic material can reproduce.
Traditional sandstone tenement. Blonde stone villa. Period Scottish cottage. Timber windows look right. UPVC just can’t.
Value, too. On older properties, where original or sympathetic features are part of the appeal, timber windows add real value that UPVC can’t match.
Double glazed wooden windows
Sash or casement. Every window. Double-glazed sealed units fitted as standard.
The sealed unit is housed inside the timber frame, two layers of glass with a sealed cavity between them, reducing heat transfer and improving sound insulation.
Timber frame. Double glazing. Combined: excellent thermal and acoustic results across both window types.
For properties that call for a traditional divided-light look, we can add glazing bars as an addition.
The frames are solid, they’re just single glazed. In a lot of cases, we can convert to double glazing as part of a restoration programme, retaining what’s worth keeping, lifting thermal performance, no full replacement needed.
Kirkcudbright’s older properties bring up this situation all the time. Well-built existing sash windows, but single glazing that admits cold air and street noise like there’s nothing there.
Every unit we install: complies with current building regulations for thermal standards.

Timber windows for conservation areas
Over 600 conservation areas throughout Scotland. The odds are yours is one of them.
If your property is in one of these areas, it’s worth understanding that UPVC is not an approved window material. Your local council will likely require replacements that mirror the original in material, design, and profile.
Over 20 years manufacturing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland, we know exactly what the council requires.
We can walk you through consent conditions and make windows that meet planning condition while giving you modern performance. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more depth.
Timber types
Two timber types. That’s it. We stock both across the entire window range.
Treated pine: most requested choice. Pressure-treated against rot and decay. Accepts paint well. Holds up reliably in Kirkcudbright’s wet weather.
If a natural timber look is desired, or if extra longevity is needed, hardwood is the choice. It’s naturally more wear-resistant and accepts stains and oils beautifully.
We advise on the right timber for each job, based on the property, its exposure, and the finish you want. Just ask and we’ll guide you.
Timber windows, your questions answered
What styles of timber windows do you make?
We produce sash and case windows and casement windows, both offered in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Kirkcudbright style, sliding up and down within a box frame. Casement windows hinge and swing out. We also build fixed window panels for any window opening setup.
Is timber better than UPVC?
For results, longevity, and looks? Yes, timber is the better choice. It insulates better at the same frame thickness, lasts a lot longer when looked after, and can be fixed rather than replaced. It’s also the sole material permitted for listed buildings and is strongly favoured in conservation areas.
Can you upgrade single glazing to double glazing in existing timber windows?
In most cases, yes. If your existing timber frames are in sound condition, we can switch the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. That keeps the original frames and look while improving thermal and acoustic results.
