Timber Windows Kingscross

Kingscross has its own timber window specialists and we’re called Woodfellas. We produce, renovate, and fit wooden windows from our workshop, covering residential properties and business properties across Central Scotland.

Each window is custom-built using ethically sourced treated pine or hardwood timber. Double glazing and upgraded security come as standard on every unit.

Sash and case for a tenement, casements for a modern extension, or a full set of replacement windows for whatever sort of property you’ve got, we make them all in-house and fit ourselves.

Our wooden window options

Two types. Two sets of requirements. We make one for older properties, one for modern ones, but both are offered in treated pine or hardwood, and both feature double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Classic sash windows

Scotland’s original window type.

Sash windows move vertically within a box frame, using a system of weighted cords and pulleys doing the work. They’re the standard window type on most of Kingscross’s period tenements, and the required replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.

We renovate, repair, and make custom sash windows. Original profiles. Period proportions. Modern thermal and acoustic standards.

Restoration typically includes draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, and it’s the smartest option where the existing frames are sound. We carry out full surveys before recommending any replacement.

Traditional casement windows

Casement windows swing out on hinges, bigger opening for fresh air, easy cleaning from inside. You’ll spot them across Kingscross properties built from the 1920s onwards, and on extensions, dormers, and newer builds.

We produce custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed setups, so whatever style you need, we can deliver it. And like our sash windows, every casement is made to measure and fitted with double glazing as standard.

Our timber casement windows page covers all available options and options in full detail.

Why timber windows are the right choice

Timber windows have been around for generations, and there’s a good reason they’ve stayed the go-to. It’s not just tradition, timber truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that count to homeowners.

How timber insulates naturally

Timber transfers heat far less easily than aluminium. Outperforms UPVC at the same frame thicknesses. Better thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before the double glazing even factors in.

In Scotland, where energy costs are a real issue, the thermal qualities of a timber frame make a tangible effect, and that adds up over time.

Repair not replace

Where wear appears in a timber window, restoration remains a realistic choice.

Rot in a sill can be cut out and fresh timber spliced in. A damaged part of frame can be rebuilt. UPVC isn’t repairable in the same way. When it breaks down, the whole unit ends up in landfill and you start again.

Over the lifetime of a property, maintaining and repairing timber windows rather than replacing them saves cost and cuts waste. It’s a straightforward calculation.

Sustainability

All our timber comes from sustainably managed woodland.

Timber: renewable. Holds carbon. Breaks down cleanly. UPVC: plastic from oil. Aluminium manufacturing: extremely energy-intensive.

Care about your property’s carbon impact? Timber. Obvious option.

The appeal and value of timber windows

Weight. Depth. Grain. No man-made alternative can replicate it.

On a traditional sandstone tenement, a pale stone villa, or a period Scottish cottage, timber windows produce an visual fit that UPVC never quite manages.

Timber windows also add real value to a property, especially older properties where original or sympathetic features are part of the overall appeal.

Double glazed timber windows

Sash or casement. Every window. Double-glazed sealed units installed as standard.

The sealed unit fits inside the timber frame, two panes of glass with a sealed cavity between them, cutting heat transfer and improving sound insulation.

The timber frame does its bit. The double glazing does its bit. Together they give you solid thermal and acoustic results across both types, sash or casement, same result.

Need a traditional divided-light appearance? We fit glazing bars.

Where older timber windows are structurally sound but single glazed, we can in many cases convert them to double glazing as part of a restoration programme, preserving the original frames and improving thermal performance without necessitating a full replacement.

It’s a particularly regular project on Kingscross’s older properties, solid existing sash windows, but single glazing that allows in cold and road noise. Easily fixed.

Every unit we put in complies with the latest building regulations for thermal standards. Always.

Conservation area timber windows

Scotland: over 600 recognised conservation areas.

In a conservation area? UPVC is not an acceptable window material, and your local council will often require replacements that replicate the original in material, design, and profile.

We’ve been producing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings across Scotland for over 20 years, so we know what the council expects, nothing new to us.

Consent requirements, planning conditions, modern standards, we cover all of it. And our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more detail for anyone who wants to know more.

Our timber choices

Two timber types, and that’s what we stock across all window range.

Treated pine is the most requested choice. It is pressure-treated to ward off rot and decay, holds a painted finish well, and holds up well in Kingscross’s damp weather.

For properties where a natural timber look is preferred, or where added durability is required, we offer hardwood, which is by nature more resistant to wear and accepts stains and oils beautifully.

We’ll tell you which timber is best for your job based on the property, the exposure level, and what finish you’re after.

Timber windows FAQ

What types of timber windows do you produce?

Sash and case is the traditional Kingscross window, moving up and down in a box frame, that’s one type. Casement windows are hinged and swing outward, that’s the other. Both are available in treated pine or hardwood. And we make fixed window panels too, for any window opening setup.

Is timber better than UPVC?

Yes, for performance, longevity, and appearance, timber is the better choice. It insulates more effectively at the equivalent frame thickness, lasts considerably longer when looked after, and can be restored rather than replaced. It’s also the only material accepted for listed buildings and is greatly preferred in conservation areas.

Replacing single glazing to double glazing in timber windows, is it possible?

In many cases, yes. If your current timber frames are in good condition, we can upgrade the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. The result is better thermal and acoustic performance while keeping the existing frames and appearance.
