Timber Windows Kilsyth

Kilsyth has its own timber window makers and we’re called Woodfellas. We make, refurbish, and put in timber windows from our workshop, serving residential properties and business properties across Central Scotland.

Every window is custom-built. Ethically sourced treated pine or hardwood. Double glazing and improved security as standard.

Tenements need sash and case, newer extensions want casement, and some properties need a complete replacement set. Whatever the job, we produce ourselves and fit ourselves. No middlemen.

Wooden windows we make

Two types of timber window. Each designed for different properties and needs. Both made in treated pine or hardwood. Both featuring double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash windows

The classic Scottish window, and still the best.

Before UPVC, before aluminium, Kilsyth’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements were fitted with sash windows, sliding vertically in a box frame on cords and counterbalance weights. They’re still the only permitted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.

We renovate, fix, and manufacture custom sash windows built to match existing profiles and proportions. The result is modern thermal and acoustic results in a window that fits right in.

A lot of the time, restoring the existing frames, draught-proofing and double glazing, is the better call if the frames themselves are still sound. We always do a full assessment before recommending a replacement.

Casement windows

Hinged. Open outward to open. Bigger opening, easier access from inside. Typical on Kilsyth properties built from the 1920s on, including extensions, dormers, and newer builds.

Side hung, top hung, fixed, we make custom timber casement windows in all three configurations. Like our sash windows, every single one is custom-built and double glazed as standard.

All the options, all the choices, it’s on our timber casement windows page.

Timber windows, why they’re the best choice

Timber’s long-standing position as the preferred window material is not simply a question of tradition. It actually outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that count to homeowners.

Natural thermal insulation

Timber transfers heat far less easily than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at the same frame widths. This means better thermal performance from the frame itself, before the double glazing is even added.

Scotland’s not exactly tropical, and energy costs are no joke, so the fact that timber frames keep heat in better makes a real difference to what you spend.

Repair it, don’t replace it

Timber window deteriorates? Good news: you can fix it.

Rot in a sill or bottom rail, fresh timber goes in. Damaged frame part, it gets rebuilt. The story with UPVC is different: it can’t be repaired, so when it breaks, the whole unit ends up in landfill and you’re back at the beginning.

Year after year, look after rather than start over. Over the lifetime of a property, that adds up to real cost saved and a lot less material going to landfill.

Sustainability

The timber we use comes from responsibly managed woodland, every piece of it.

Holds carbon as long as it ages, then breaks down cleanly. No landfill, no toxic process. UPVC is plastic from oil, and aluminium production is highly energy-intensive. The difference doesn’t need explaining.

Concerned about your property’s environmental impact? Timber. Clear choice.

Appeal and property value

There’s a weight, a feel, and a grain to timber windows that synthetic materials simply can’t replicate.

On a traditional sandstone tenement, a blonde stone villa, or a period Scottish cottage, timber windows just belong in a way UPVC simply can’t match.

Value, too. On older properties, where original or sympathetic features are part of the appeal, timber windows contribute genuine worth that UPVC can’t match.

Double glazing timber windows

Sash or casement, it doesn’t matter. Every window that we produce includes double-glazed sealed units included as standard. Always has.

The sealed unit is housed within the timber frame, using two panes of glass separated by a cavity to limit heat transfer and boost sound insulation.

Timber frame. Double glazing. Combined: excellent thermal and acoustic performance across both window styles.

We can also fit glazing bars if your property calls for a traditional divided-light appearance.

Where older timber windows are solid but single glazed, we can often upgrade them to double glazing as part of a restoration, retaining the existing frames and improving performance without needing a full replacement.

Kilsyth’s older properties bring up this situation all the time. Well-built existing sash windows, but single glazing that admits cold air and road noise like there’s nothing there.

Every unit we install satisfies current building regulations for thermal performance. Always.

Conservation area timber windows

Scotland has over 600 officially recognised conservation areas, and if you’re in one, it matters.

If your property is in one of these areas, UPVC is not an acceptable window material, and your local council may well insist on replacements that match the original in material, design, and profile.

Having produced timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties across Scotland for over 20 years, we have a strong understanding of what the council expects.

We can advise on consent requirements and produce windows that meet planning condition while delivering modern performance. If you want more on the regulations, our sash and case windows page covers them in full detail.

Wood types we work with

Across all our window products, we use two types of timber.

Treated pine is what most people choose, pressure-treated to prevent rot and decay, takes a paint finish well, and holds up in Kilsyth’s wet climate with no a problem.

If a natural timber finish is what you want, or if extra longevity is required, hardwood is the choice. It’s by nature more wear-resistant and takes stains and oils beautifully.

Property. Exposure. Finish. We advise on the right timber for each job.

Timber windows, your questions answered

What types of timber windows do you make?

We make both sash and case windows and casement windows, available in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case windows are the traditional Kilsyth design, operating by moving vertically within a box frame. Casement windows are hinged and open outward. We also produce fixed window panels to suit any window opening setup.

Is timber a better choice than UPVC?

Three things: performance, lifespan, looks. Timber wins on all three. Better insulation at the comparable frame thickness. Significantly longer lifespan when maintained. Can be repaired, not replaced. And it’s the sole material permitted for listed buildings, strongly favoured in conservation areas too.

Is it possible to upgrade single glazing in timber windows?

In most cases, yes. If your existing timber frames are in solid condition, we can switch the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. The outcome is better thermal and acoustic performance while keeping the existing frames and appearance.
