If you need timber windows done well in Kilmarnock, Woodfellas are who you want. We build, renovate, and fit timber windows out of our Kilmarnock premises, covering houses and commercial properties throughout Central Scotland.
Every window that we produce is custom-built from sustainably sourced treated pine or hardwood, and double glazing and enhanced security are fitted as standard.
Whatever you need, sash and case for a tenement, casement for a modern extension, or a complete replacement set for any type of property, we build them ourselves and fit ourselves.
Our timber window range
Two types of timber window. Each built for different properties and specifications. Both made in treated pine or hardwood. Both featuring double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Sash windows
Scotland’s traditional window style.
Sash windows slide vertically within a timber box frame, with a system of weighted cords and pulleys doing the work. They’re the original window type on most of Kilmarnock’s period tenements, and the required replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.
Whether your sash windows need refurbishing, repairing, or replacing altogether, we produce custom ones that replicate the period profiles and proportions, while still achieving modern thermal and acoustic results.
Restoration usually includes draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades. Smartest option where original frames are sound. We inspect fully before recommending replacement.

Standard casement windows
Hinged. Open outward to open. Larger opening, easier access from inside. Typical on Kilmarnock properties dating from the 1920s on, including rear extensions, dormers, and newer builds.
Side hung, top hung, fixed, three setups, all in custom timber. And like our sash windows, every casement we produce is custom-built and double glazed as standard.

Why timber is the right choice for windows
Generations of timber windows, and they’re not still around out of habit. Timber genuinely outperforms UPVC and aluminium in a number of areas that count to households. The numbers say it all.
Natural heat insulation
Timber carries heat far less quickly than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at comparable frame thicknesses. The result is stronger thermal efficiency from the frame itself, and that’s before the double glazing gets involved.
Scotland’s not exactly warm, and heating bills are no joke, so the fact that timber frames insulate better makes a tangible effect to what you spend.
Repair, don’t replace
If a timber window deteriorates, the good news is you can repair it.
Rot in a sill? Cut it out, fit fresh timber. Damaged frame section? Rebuild it. UPVC can’t be repaired: it breaks, it ends up in landfill, you start again.
Year after year, maintain rather than replace. Over the life of a property, that adds up to real money not spent and a lot less waste going to landfill.
Environmental sustainability
All our timber is procured from sustainably managed forests.
Timber is a natural material that sequesters carbon for its entire life and breaks down cleanly at end of life. UPVC is a plastic based on oil, and aluminium production is extremely carbon-heavy, worth knowing if the environment is important to you.
Concerned about your home’s carbon impact? Timber. Clear option.
Appeal and property value
Weight. Depth. Grain. No artificial material can copy it.
Sandstone tenement. Light stone villa. Period Scottish cottage. Timber windows look right. UPVC never quite manages.
They add real property value too. Especially period properties. Original or sympathetic features matter to buyers.
Double glazing in timber windows
Sash or casement, it doesn’t matter. Every window that we make comes with double-glazed sealed units included as standard. Always has.
Sealed unit in the frame. Two panes of glass. Cavity between them. Cuts heat transfer. Lifts sound insulation.
Combine the timber frame’s natural thermal properties with double glazing and you get excellent thermal and acoustic performance across both window types.
Need glazing bars for a traditional divided-light appearance? We can install those too.
Got older timber windows that are still sound but only single glazed? In a lot of cases we can convert them to double glazing as part of a restoration programme, keeping the existing frames and lifting thermal performance without replacing everything.
This is a frequent request on Kilmarnock’s older properties. The original sash windows are solid, but the single glazing lets in cold air and road noise, and converting to double glazing fixes both.
Every unit we put in satisfies the latest building regulations for thermal standards. Always.

Conservation area timber windows
Over 600 conservation areas across Scotland. The odds are yours is one of them.
If your property is in one of these areas, you need to know that UPVC is not an approved window material. Your local council will likely require replacements that mirror the original in material, design, and profile.
Over 20 years manufacturing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings across Scotland, we understand what the council requires.
Consent requirements, planning conditions, modern standards, we cover all of it. And our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more depth for anyone who wants to know more.
Types of timber we work with
Two timber types. That’s what we work with across the entire window product range.
Treated pine is the most requested option, and for good reason. It’s pressure-treated to resist rot and decay, holds a paint finish well, and works reliably in Kilmarnock’s damp weather.
If a natural timber finish is what you want, or if extra strength is called for, hardwood is the choice. It’s inherently more resistant to wear and accepts stains and oils very well.
Property. Exposure. Finish. We advise on the right timber for each project.
Timber windows, your questions answered
Which timber window types do you make?
We produce sash and case windows and casement windows, both made in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Kilmarnock design, moving vertically within a timber box frame. Casement windows are hinged and open outward. We also make fixed window panels to match any window opening configuration.
Timber windows vs UPVC, which is better?
For results, lifespan, and looks? Yes, timber wins. It insulates better at the comparable frame thickness, lasts significantly longer when maintained, and can be restored not fully replaced. It’s also the sole material permitted for listed buildings and strongly favoured in conservation areas.
Is it possible to replace single glazing in timber windows?
In most cases, yes. If your existing timber frames are in solid condition, we can convert the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. The result is improved thermal and acoustic performance while retaining the original frames and character.
