If you need timber windows done right in Kilbirnie, Woodfellas are who you want. We make, renovate, and install timber windows out of our Kilbirnie premises, working across homes and businesses throughout Central Scotland.
Every window is custom-built. Ethically sourced treated pine or hardwood. Double glazing and upgraded security as standard.
Sash and case for a tenement, casements for a contemporary extension, or a full set of replacement windows for whatever sort of property you’ve got, we produce them all ourselves and put them in ourselves.
Our range of timber windows
We manufacture two main types of timber window, each designed for different properties and requirements. Both are made in treated pine or hardwood, and both feature double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Sash windows
The traditional window design for Scottish properties.
You know what makes sash windows special? They slide vertically in a box frame using weighted cords and pulleys. They’re the standard window on most of Kilbirnie’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements, and the required replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.
We renovate, fix, and build custom sash windows. Period profiles. Period proportions. Modern thermal and acoustic standards.
Restoration usually covers draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, and it’s the smartest option where the original frames are in good condition. We carry out full assessments before recommending replacement.

Casement windows
Hinged. Swing out to open. Larger opening, easier cleaning from inside. Standard on Kilbirnie properties dating from the 1920s on, including rear extensions, dormers, and new builds.
Side hung. Top hung. Fixed. We manufacture custom timber casement windows in all three. Every one made to measure. Double glazed as standard.
All the options, all the choices, it’s on our timber casement windows page.
Why timber is the right choice for windows
Timber’s long-standing position as the go-to window material is not simply a question of tradition. It actually outperforms UPVC and aluminium in a number of areas that make a difference to households.
Timber’s natural insulation
Did you know timber transfers heat far less readily than aluminium, and it outperforms UPVC at the equivalent frame width? That means stronger thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before you even factor in the double glazing.
In Scotland, where energy costs are a real concern, the insulating characteristics of a timber frame make a measurable effect, and that matters over time.
Repair, not replace
Where deterioration appears in a timber window, remediation remains a practical route.
Rot in a sill, new timber goes in. Damaged frame part, it gets replaced in section. The story with UPVC is not the same: it can’t be repaired, so when it breaks, the whole unit ends up in landfill and you’re back at the beginning.
Over the lifetime of a property, maintaining and repairing timber windows rather than replacing them cuts cost and reduces material waste. It’s a simple calculation.
The sustainable choice
All timber used in our windows is obtained from ethically managed forest.
Timber is a natural material, it locks in carbon as it stands and biodegrades naturally when it’s done. UPVC is plastic derived from oil, and aluminium production takes a enormous amount of energy.
If the environmental footprint of your house counts to you, timber is the obvious choice. It’s as simple as that.
Beauty and appeal
Timber windows possess a weight, physical depth, and grain that no man-made alternative can reproduce.
On a sandstone tenement, a blonde stone villa, or a traditional Scottish cottage, timber windows achieve an aesthetic rightness that UPVC never quite manages.
They add tangible property value too. Especially period homes. Period features count to potential buyers.
Timber windows with double glazing
Every window we make, sash or casement, comes with double-glazed sealed units as standard. No extras required.
The sealed unit sits within the timber frame, employing two panes of glass separated by a sealed cavity to limit heat transfer and improve sound insulation.
The timber frame’s natural thermal properties combined with the double-glazed sealed unit achieve solid thermal and acoustic performance across both window styles. That’s what you get as standard.
Need a traditional divided-light look? We install glazing bars.
Got older timber windows that are still sound but only single glazed? In a lot of cases we can convert them to double glazing as part of a restoration, keeping the existing frames and boosting thermal performance without replacing everything.
Kilbirnie’s older properties throw up this situation all the time. Well-constructed existing sash windows, but single glazing that allows in cold and street noise like it isn’t there.
Every unit we install: complies with current building regulations for thermal performance.

Listed buildings timber windows
Scotland contains over 600 designated conservation areas.
Property in a conservation area? UPVC: not acceptable. Council may require replacements matching the original. Material, design, profile.
Having produced timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties across Scotland for over 20 years, we have developed a thorough understanding of council requirements.
We can help with consent conditions and produce windows that satisfy planning condition while delivering modern performance. If you want more on the regulations, our sash and case windows page covers them in detail.
Our timber types
Across all our window ranges, we work with two types of timber.
Treated pine is the most chosen choice, and for good reasons. It’s pressure-treated to resist rot and decay, accepts a painted finish well, and holds up well in Kilbirnie’s wet climate.
Want a natural timber look? Need extra strength? Hardwood. By nature more immune to wear. Takes stains and oils beautifully.
Property, exposure level, finish, three things we consider before recommending the right timber for each project. Get those right and the rest follows.
Timber windows, your questions answered
What types of timber windows do you make?
We build sash and case windows and casement windows, both offered in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Kilbirnie style, moving up and down within a box frame. Casement windows open outward. We also build fixed window panels for any opening setup.
Timber windows vs UPVC, which is better?
On results, lifespan, and appearance: yes. Timber insulates more effectively at the equivalent frame width, lasts considerably longer when maintained, and can be fixed rather than fully replaced when damage happens. It’s also the only material accepted for listed buildings and is strongly favoured in conservation areas.
Can I upgrade single glazing to double glazing in existing timber windows?
In most cases, yes. If your current timber frames are in sound condition, we can upgrade the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. That keeps the existing frames and character while lifting thermal and acoustic performance.
