If you need timber windows done properly in Kilbarchan, Woodfellas are the right choice. We build, restore, and put in timber windows out of our Kilbarchan premises, working across residential properties and commercial properties right across Central Scotland.
Not a single window leaves our workshop without being built to order. Ethically sourced treated pine or hardwood, double glazing, and improved security, all standard.
Sash and case for a tenement, casements for a newer extension, or a complete set of new windows for whatever type of property you’ve got, we build them all ourselves and fit ourselves.
Our range of timber windows
Two primary types of timber window, each right for different properties and requirements. Both made in treated pine or hardwood, and both come with double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Traditional sash windows
The traditional Scottish window style.
Sash windows move up and down within a timber box frame, using a system of cords and counterbalance weights. They are the standard window type on most of Kilbarchan’s period tenements, and they’re the required replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.
We restore, repair, and make custom sash windows that match original profiles and proportions while achieving modern thermal and acoustic performance.
Restoration typically means draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades. Smartest call where existing frames are solid. We inspect fully before recommending any replacement.

Standard casement windows
Casement windows are hinged and open outward to open, giving a bigger opening for airflow and making cleaning from inside much easier. They’re common on Kilbarchan properties built from the 1920s onwards, as well as extensions, dormers, and newer builds.
We build custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed arrangements, so whatever style you need, we can make it. And like our sash windows, every casement is built to your size and double glazed as standard.

Wood windows, why they’re the right choice
Timber has been the go-to window material for generations. Not just tradition, it truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that make a difference to property owners.
Timber’s natural insulation
Timber transfers heat far less quickly than aluminium. Outperforms UPVC at comparable frame thicknesses. Stronger thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before the double glazing even factors in.
In Scotland, where heating bills are a real challenge, the thermal characteristics of a timber frame make a measurable effect, and that adds up over time.
Repair before replace
Damage happens. With timber, that’s not the end of the story. You can sort it.
Rot in a sill? Cut it out and fit new timber. Damaged part of frame? Replace in section. UPVC isn’t repairable. When it gives up, the whole unit goes to landfill and you’re starting from scratch.
Over the lifetime of a property, repairing and maintaining timber windows rather than going for full replacement cuts money and cuts waste. It’s a simple calculation.
The sustainable choice
We get all our timber from ethically managed woodland, so you can know it’s responsibly produced.
Timber is a natural material, it holds carbon as it stands and biodegrades naturally when it’s done. UPVC is plastic derived from oil, and aluminium manufacturing takes a significant amount of power.
Your property’s carbon footprint is important? Then timber is the obvious option. It always has been.
The character and value of timber windows
Timber windows have a weight, depth, and natural grain that no synthetic alternative can match.
Sandstone tenement. Blonde stone villa. Traditional Scottish cottage. Put timber windows in and they belong. Put UPVC in and something’s slightly off, it never quite manages that same fit.
And they contribute tangible value to a property too, especially period properties where period features are part of the attraction.
Double-glazed timber windows
Whether sash or casement, all the windows we manufacture feature double-glazed sealed units fitted. It’s always included.
Two layers of glass. A sealed cavity between them. The sealed unit sits inside the timber frame and handles the rest, cutting heat transfer, improving sound insulation.
Put that double glazing together with the natural insulating properties of the timber frame, and you’ve got excellent thermal and acoustic results across both sash and casement.
For properties that need a traditional divided-light look, we can add glazing bars as part of the installation.
Older frames. Single glazed. Still structurally sound? We can in many cases upgrade to double glazing as part of a restoration. Existing frames are preserved. Thermal performance improves. No full replacement.
This is a common project on Kilbarchan’s older properties. The original sash windows are well-constructed, but the single glazing allows in cold and street noise, and converting to double glazing fixes both.
Building regulations for thermal performance? Every unit we fit meets them. No exceptions.

Conservation area timber windows
There are over 600 conservation areas in Scotland, quite a number.
Where a property falls within one of these areas, UPVC is not an approved window material, and the local planning authority will likely require replacements to mirror the original design in material, design, and profile.
Having produced timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties across Scotland for over 20 years, we have a strong understanding of council requirements.
We can help with consent conditions and make windows that meet planning condition while delivering modern standards. If you want more on the regulations, our sash and case windows page covers them in detail.
Timber options
Across all our window products, we stock two types of timber.
Most customers pick treated pine. It’s pressure-treated to resist rot and decay, takes a painted finish really well, and holds up in Kilbarchan’s rain-heavy climate without any trouble.
Want a natural timber look? Need extra hardwearing performance? Hardwood. Naturally more immune to wear. Takes stains and oils really well.
We advise on the right timber for each project, taking into account the property age, its exposure, and the required finish.
Common questions about timber windows
What styles of timber windows do you offer?
We produce both sash and case windows and casement windows, offered in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case windows are the traditional Kilbarchan style, operating by sliding up and down within a box frame. Casement windows are hinged and swing outward. We also make fixed window panels to suit any window opening configuration.
Timber or UPVC, which is the better window?
On every fronts, performance, longevity, and appearance, yes, timber is the superior choice. It insulates more effectively at equivalent frame thicknesses, lasts significantly longer when regularly maintained, and can be repaired rather than replaced when damage occurs. Timber is also the sole material permitted for listed buildings and is greatly favoured in conservation areas.
Is it possible to upgrade single glazing in timber windows?
In many cases, yes! If your existing frames are in sound condition, we can switch to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration, preserving the existing frames and appearance while improving thermal and acoustic performance.
