Timber Windows Kelvindale

Kelvindale has its own timber window makers and we’re called Woodfellas. We build, restore, and fit timber windows from our base, serving homes and commercial properties across Central Scotland.

Every window that we produce is made to measure from sustainably sourced treated pine or hardwood, and double glazing and enhanced security are fitted as standard.

Sash and case for a tenement, casements for a contemporary extension, or a full set of replacement windows for whatever type of property you’ve got, we build them all ourselves and put them in ourselves.

Our wooden window range

Two types. Two sets of requirements. We build one for older properties, one for newer ones, but both come in treated pine or hardwood, and both feature double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash and case windows

Scotland’s traditional window style.

Before UPVC, before aluminium, Kelvindale’s period tenements were fitted with sash windows, sliding up and down in a timber box frame on weighted cords and pulleys. They’re still the required replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.

We renovate, repair, and manufacture custom sash windows built to match period profiles and proportions. The result is modern thermal and acoustic results in a window that fits right in.

The existing frames are sound, so why swap them? Restoration, draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, is often the most sensible route. We complete full assessments first, before we ever recommend going further.

Casement windows

Casement windows swing outward on hinges, larger opening for airflow, easy access from inside. You’ll find them across Kelvindale properties dating from the 1920s onwards, and on rear extensions, dormers, and new builds.

We manufacture custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed configurations. Just like our sash windows, every casement is built to order and fitted with double glazing as standard, no exceptions.

Why timber is the right call

Centuries of timber windows, and they’re not still around out of habit. Timber genuinely outperforms UPVC and aluminium in several areas that make a difference to property owners. The record speak for themselves.

Natural thermal insulation

Here’s something that surprises people: timber actually transfers heat far less easily than aluminium, and it outperforms UPVC at the comparable frame width. That means the frame itself is already doing stronger thermal work before you even factor in the double glazing.

In a climate like Scotland, where heating bills are a real challenge for homeowners, the insulating qualities of a timber frame make a real difference.

Repair, don’t replace

Timber window takes a knock? Good news: you can sort it.

Rot in a sill can be cut out and new timber put in its stead. A damaged part of frame can be repaired and restored. UPVC offers no such alternative: when it fails, the whole unit goes to landfill and the process starts again.

Think about it: over the lifetime of a property, being able to look after timber windows rather than going for full replacement saves serious money and cuts a lot of waste.

Environmental performance

Every piece of timber we use comes from ethically managed woodland.

Timber is a sustainable resource that stores carbon during its lifespan and biodegrades naturally at end of life. UPVC is a plastic based on oil, and aluminium manufacturing is highly carbon-heavy, worth knowing if the environment is important to you.

If the carbon footprint of your house is important to you, timber is obviously the right option. It’s not complicated.

Character and property value

Timber windows have a weight, a depth, and a natural grain that no artificial alternative can come close to.

On a sandstone tenement, a blonde stone villa, or a period Scottish cottage, timber windows just fit in a way UPVC never quite manages.

And they add genuine value to a property, especially period homes where original or sympathetic features are part of the appeal.

Double glazed timber windows

Sash or casement. Every window. Double-glazed sealed units included as standard.

The sealed unit sits inside the timber frame, two panes of glass with a cavity between them, reducing heat transfer and boosting sound insulation.

Combined with the inherent insulating properties of the timber frame, a double-glazed timber window achieves excellent thermal and acoustic performance across both sash and casement types.

We can also install glazing bars if your property needs a traditional divided-light look.

If your older timber windows are still structurally sound but single glazed, we can often upgrade them to double glazing as part of a restoration. This retains the existing frames and improves thermal performance without a full replacement.

This is a regular request on Kelvindale’s older properties. The existing sash windows are well-constructed, but the single glazing allows in cold and ambient noise, and upgrading to double glazing addresses both.

Every unit we put in meets current building regulations for thermal standards. That’s guaranteed.

Timber windows and conservation areas

Over 600 conservation areas throughout Scotland. The odds are yours is one of them.

Property in a conservation area? UPVC: not approved. Council may require replacements mirroring the original. Material, design, profile.

We’ve been manufacturing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland for over 20 years, so we know what the council requires, no surprises.

We walk you through consent requirements. We make windows that tick every planning condition. Modern standards included. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more detail.

Timber types

We use two timber types across the entire window range, here’s what you need to know about each.

Treated pine is what most people choose, pressure-treated to prevent rot and decay, holds a paint finish well, and handles Kelvindale’s wet climate with no a problem.

For properties where a natural timber finish is wanted, or where additional longevity is required, we supply hardwood, which is naturally more immune to damage and takes stains and oils beautifully.

Property, exposure level, finish, three things we look at before helping you choose the right timber for each project. Get those right and the rest follows.

Timber windows FAQ

What types of timber windows do you make?

Sash and case is the traditional Kelvindale style, sliding up and down in a box frame, that’s one type. Casement windows are hinged and open outward, that’s the other. Both are available in treated pine or hardwood. And we produce fixed window panels too, for any opening configuration.

Are timber windows worth it over UPVC?

Three things: performance, lifespan, appearance. Timber wins on all three. More effective insulation at the equivalent frame width. Considerably longer lifespan when looked after. Repairable, not replaced. And it’s the only material permitted for listed buildings, highly preferred in conservation areas too.

Can I replace single glazing to double glazing in existing timber windows?

In most cases, yes. Good existing frames? We switch the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. Existing frames stay, thermal and acoustic results gets better.
