Woodfellas are the timber window team operating from Johnstone. We build, renovate, and install wooden windows from our Johnstone workshop, serving both residential properties and commercial properties across Central Scotland.
Every window is custom-built. Responsibly sourced treated pine or hardwood. Double glazing and improved security as standard.
Tenement, extension, any property. Sash and case, casement, or a complete new set: we make ourselves and fit ourselves.
Wooden windows we make
We make two main types of timber window, each built for different properties and requirements. Whichever you choose, both are offered in treated pine or hardwood and both feature double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Sash windows
Scotland’s classic window type.
Before UPVC, before aluminium, Johnstone’s period tenements were built with sash windows, moving up and down in a box frame on cords and counterbalance weights. They’re still the required replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.
We restore, fix, and manufacture custom sash windows designed to match original profiles and proportions. The outcome is modern thermal and acoustic standards in a window that looks exactly as it should.
A lot of the time, restoring the existing frames, draught-proofing and double glazing, is the smarter call if the frames themselves are still in good shape. We do a full survey before recommending a replacement.

Outward-opening casement windows
Casement windows swing out on hinges, wider opening for airflow, easy access from inside. You’ll spot them across Johnstone properties dating from the 1920s onwards, and on rear extensions, dormers, and new builds.
Side hung. Top hung. Fixed. We manufacture custom timber casement windows in all three. Every one made to measure. Fitted with double glazing as standard.
For more on styles and options, our timber casement windows section has all the detail you need.
Timber windows, why they’re the right choice
Centuries of timber windows, and they’re not still around out of habit. Timber actually outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that count to homeowners. The record say it all.
Timber’s natural insulation
Timber transfers heat far less quickly than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at equivalent frame thicknesses. The outcome is better thermal performance from the frame itself, and that’s before the double glazing factors in.
Scotland. Cold. Expensive to heat. A timber frame’s thermal characteristics make a real impact.
Repair, don’t replace
Timber window takes a knock? Good news: you can fix it.
Rot in a sill or bottom rail can be cut out and fresh timber spliced in. A damaged section of frame can be rebuilt. UPVC isn’t repairable in the same way. When it breaks down, the entire unit ends up in landfill and you start again.
Over a property’s lifetime: repair and maintain, not replace. Cuts cost. Reduces material waste.
Eco credentials
All timber used in our windows is procured from responsibly managed forest.
Timber: renewable. Holds carbon. Breaks down naturally. UPVC: plastic from oil. Aluminium production: highly carbon-heavy.
Care about your property’s carbon impact? Timber. Obvious choice.
Character and property value
Pick up a timber window sash and you feel it, substance, character, texture. No artificial alternative can match that.
Traditional sandstone tenement. Pale stone villa. Traditional Scottish cottage. Put timber windows in and they belong. Put UPVC in and it’s always slightly off, it just can’t that same rightness.
Value, too. On older properties, where period features are part of what makes them special, timber windows bring tangible value that UPVC can’t match.
Timber windows with double glazing
Sash or casement. Every window. Double-glazed sealed units installed as standard.
Two panes of glass. A sealed cavity between them. The sealed unit is housed inside the timber frame and handles the rest, reducing heat transfer, lifting sound insulation.
Timber frame. Double glazing. Combined: strong thermal and acoustic performance across both window styles.
If your property needs a traditional divided-light look, we can fit glazing bars, just ask.
The frames are solid, they’re just single glazed. In many cases, we can upgrade to double glazing as part of a restoration programme, keeping what’s worth keeping, improving performance, no full replacement required.
This is a frequent job on Johnstone’s older properties, where well-built original sash windows are solid but single glazing allows in cold and street noise.
Every unit we install satisfies the latest building regulations for thermal performance. Always.

Listed buildings timber windows
Scotland has more than 600 recognised conservation areas, and if you’re in one changes what you are permitted to do with your windows.
In a conservation area? UPVC is not an approved window material, and your local council may require replacements that match the original in material, design, and profile.
Twenty years of producing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings across Scotland. The council expectations? We’ve been through all of it. We understand what’s required.
We can advise on consent conditions and build windows that satisfy planning condition while giving you modern standards. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more depth.
Timber options
Woodfellas works with two types of timber across its full window product range.
Treated pine is what most people choose, pressure-treated to resist rot and decay, holds a paint finish well, and handles Johnstone’s rain-heavy conditions with no a problem.
If you want a natural timber finish, or if you need something extra durable, hardwood is the answer, it’s naturally more immune to wear and it accepts stains and oils beautifully.
Not sure which timber to pick? We help you choose the right option for each job based on the property, the exposure, and the finish you have in mind.
Timber windows FAQ
What types of timber windows do you make?
We produce sash and case windows and casement windows, both available in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case: the traditional Johnstone style, moving up and down in a box frame. Casements: hinged, open outward. Fixed panels available too, for any window opening configuration.
Are timber windows better than UPVC?
For performance, longevity, and looks? Yes, timber is better. It insulates better at the comparable frame width, lasts considerably longer when looked after, and can be repaired rather than replaced. It’s also the only material accepted for listed buildings and is greatly favoured in conservation areas.
Can you upgrade single glazing to double glazing in existing timber windows?
In many cases, yes. Where existing timber frames are in sound condition, we can upgrade the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. This preserves the original frames and look while boosting thermal and acoustic performance.
