Timber Windows Inverkip

Inverkip has its own timber window makers and we’re called Woodfellas. We make, refurbish, and install wooden windows from our workshop, serving houses and business properties throughout Central Scotland.

Every window we produce is made to measure from sustainably sourced treated pine or hardwood timber, with double glazing and upgraded security fitted as standard.

Whatever you need, sash and case for a tenement, casement for a newer extension, or a complete new set for any kind of property, we build them in-house and fit ourselves.

Our timber window range

Two main types of timber window, each built for different properties and needs. Both available in treated pine or hardwood, and both feature double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Classic sash windows

The original Scottish window, and still the best.

Sash windows slide vertically within a timber box frame, using a system of cords and counterbalance weights. They are the standard window type on most of Inverkip’s period tenements, and they’re the required replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.

The finest sash windows should look exactly like the original. We renovate, repair, and manufacture custom ones replicating period profiles and proportions, while achieving modern thermal and acoustic results where it matters.

If your original frames are in good condition, restoration, draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, is usually the best option. We complete full assessments before recommending any replacement, so you always know where you stand.

Outward-opening casement windows

Casement windows open outward on hinges, giving a bigger opening for fresh air and making cleaning straightforward from inside. They’re the typical choice on Inverkip properties going back from the 1920s onwards, as well as rear extensions, dormers, and newer builds.

We produce custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed configurations, so whatever style you need, we can deliver it. And like our sash windows, every casement is made to measure and fitted with double glazing as standard.

Why timber is the right choice for windows

Timber has been the leading window material for hundreds of years. Not just tradition, it truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in several areas that make a difference to homeowners.

Timber’s natural insulation

Timber transfers heat far less easily than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at the same frame thicknesses. This translates to superior thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before the double glazing is even considered.

Scotland. Cold. Costly to heat. A timber frame’s thermal qualities make a real effect.

Repair, don’t replace

Things get damaged. With timber, that’s not the end of the story. You can fix it.

Rot in a sill or bottom rail can be cut out and fresh timber spliced in. A damaged section of frame can be replaced in section. UPVC can’t be repaired in the same way. When it goes, the whole unit ends up in landfill and you start again.

Over a property’s working life: repair and maintain, not replace. Cuts money. Cuts waste.

Eco credentials

All our timber is procured from sustainably managed forests.

Stores carbon as long as it works, then breaks down cleanly. No landfill, no harmful process. UPVC is plastic from oil, and aluminium manufacturing is extremely carbon-heavy. The difference doesn’t need explaining.

Your home’s carbon footprint is important? Then timber is the obvious choice. It always has been.

Character and property value

Weight. Depth. Grain. No synthetic material can replicate it.

On a sandstone tenement, a light stone villa, or a period Scottish cottage, timber windows look right in a way UPVC just can’t. Worth noting if the look count to you.

Timber windows also contribute measurable value to a property, particularly period homes where period-appropriate features are part of the overall appeal.

Double glazed timber windows

Whether sash or casement, all the windows we manufacture feature double-glazed sealed units fitted. It’s always installed.

Sealed unit in the frame. Two sheets of glass. Cavity between them. Cuts heat transfer. Improves sound insulation.

Combine the timber frame’s natural thermal qualities with double glazing and you get strong thermal and acoustic results across both window styles.

Need glazing bars for a traditional divided-light appearance? We can fit those as well.

Older frames. Single glazed. Still solid? We can often switch to double glazing as part of a restoration. Existing frames stay. Thermal performance gets better. No full replacement.

It’s a very regular job on Inverkip’s older properties, solid existing sash windows, but single glazing that lets in cold air and ambient noise. Readily fixed.

Every unit we put in: satisfies current building regulations for thermal standards.

Timber windows in conservation areas

Scotland: more than 600 designated conservation areas.

If your property is in one of these areas, it’s worth understanding that UPVC is not an permitted window material. Your local council will likely require replacements that match the original in material, design, and profile.

Having manufactured timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties throughout Scotland for over 20 years, we have a strong understanding of what the council expects.

We can walk you through consent conditions and produce windows that meet planning condition while giving you modern performance. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more depth.

Timber types

Woodfellas works with two types of timber across its entire window range.

Treated pine: most requested option. Pressure-treated against rot and decay. Takes a painted finish well. Works reliably in Inverkip’s rain-heavy weather.

Want a natural timber finish? Need extra strength? Hardwood. Naturally more resistant to wear. Takes stains and oils really well.

We recommend the most appropriate timber for each job, taking into consideration the property style, its exposure level, and the required finish.

Common questions about timber windows

What types of timber windows do you make?

Sash and case is the traditional Inverkip window, sliding up and down in a timber box frame, that’s one type. Casement windows are hinged and open outward, that’s the other. Both are available in treated pine or hardwood. And we produce fixed window panels too, for any window opening setup.

Timber windows vs UPVC, which is better?

Three things: results, longevity, looks. Timber wins on all three. More effective insulation at the equivalent frame thickness. Considerably longer lifespan when looked after. Fixable, not replaced. And it’s the only material accepted for listed buildings, strongly preferred in conservation areas too.

Replacing single glazing to double glazing in timber windows, is it possible?

Most cases, yes. The existing frames are sound, so we convert the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. Original frames remain, appearance stays, and the thermal and acoustic performance gets better, without a full replacement.
