Timber Windows Hurlford

Woodfellas are the timber window team operating from Hurlford. We build, refurbish, and install timber windows from our Hurlford workshop, working across both houses and business properties throughout Central Scotland.

Custom-built, sustainably sourced timber, double glazing, improved security. Every window we make is made to the same standard. No shortcuts.

Tenements need sash and case, modern extensions want casement, and some properties need a complete new set. Whatever the job, we make in-house and fit ourselves. No middlemen.

Our timber window range

We make two primary types of timber window, each designed for different properties and needs. Whichever you choose, both are made in treated pine or hardwood and both feature double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash windows

Scotland’s original window style.

Sash windows operate by sliding vertically within a timber box frame, using a system of cords and counterbalance weights. They represent the original window type on most of Hurlford’s period tenements, and they’re the only permitted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.

Whether your sash windows need refurbishing, repairing, or replacing altogether, we make custom ones that match the period profiles and proportions, while still delivering modern thermal and acoustic standards.

The existing frames are sound, so why swap them? Restoration, draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, is usually the better option. We carry out full surveys first, before we recommend replacement.

Casement windows

Casement windows are hinged and swing outward to open, creating a wider opening for airflow and making cleaning from inside much easier. They’re common on Hurlford properties built from the 1920s onwards, as well as extensions, dormers, and new builds.

We produce custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed configurations. Like our sash windows, every casement is custom-built and double glazed as standard.

Our timber casement windows section covers all available styles and configurations in full detail.

Why timber windows make sense

Timber windows have been around for centuries, and there’s a good reason they’ve stayed the first choice. It’s not just tradition, timber actually outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that make a difference to households.

Natural insulation

Timber carries heat far less easily than aluminium. Outperforms UPVC at equivalent frame widths. Stronger thermal performance from the frame itself, before the double glazing even comes into it.

Scotland runs on central heating. A timber frame’s thermal characteristics make a measurable effect to what you pay, and that difference adds up over the years.

Repair, don’t replace

Things get damaged. With timber, that’s not the end of the story. You can fix it.

Rot in a sill can be taken out and new timber spliced in. A damaged part of frame can be replaced in section. UPVC isn’t repairable in the same way. When it fails, the entire unit ends up in landfill and you start over.

Over the lifespan of a property, being able to maintain and repair timber windows rather than replacing them saves real money and cuts down on waste.

Environmental credentials

Every piece of timber we select comes from ethically managed forest, that’s how it works.

Timber is a replenishable material that holds carbon throughout its working life and biodegrades cleanly at end of life. UPVC is a oil-derived plastic, and aluminium manufacturing is highly energy-intensive.

If you care about the environmental footprint of your house, timber is the obvious choice.

Character and value

There’s a substance, a depth, and a texture to timber windows that man-made materials just can’t copy.

On a sandstone tenement, a blonde stone villa, or a period Scottish cottage, timber windows achieve an aesthetic rightness that UPVC consistently fails to replicate.

And they add genuine value to a property, especially period homes where original or sympathetic features are what buyers look for.

Double-glazed timber windows

All windows manufactured by Woodfellas, whether sash or casement, come with double-glazed sealed units installed as standard.

The sealed unit is housed inside the timber frame: it’s two layers of glass with a cavity between them, which reduces heat transfer and lifts sound insulation.

The timber frame’s inherent thermal characteristics combined with the double-glazed sealed unit deliver solid thermal and acoustic results across both window types. That’s what you get as standard.

If your property calls for a traditional divided-light look, we can fit glazing bars, just let us know.

Got older timber windows that are still in good shape but only single glazed? In many cases we can upgrade them to double glazing as part of a restoration, keeping the existing frames and boosting thermal performance without a full replacement.

This is a regular job on Hurlford’s older properties. The existing sash windows are well-built, but the single glazing lets in cold air and street noise, and upgrading to double glazing addresses both.

Every unit we install is compliant with current building regulations for thermal performance. That’s guaranteed.

Conservation area timber windows

Scotland has over 600 recognised conservation areas, and if you’re in one affects what you can do with your windows.

If your property is in one of these areas, UPVC is not an acceptable window material, and your local council might well require replacements that match the original in material, design, and profile.

Over 20 years producing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland. We know what the council requires.

We can help with consent conditions and make windows that satisfy planning condition while delivering modern standards. If you want more on the regulations, our sash and case windows page covers them in detail.

Timber types

Across all our window products, we stock two types of timber.

The most requested option is treated pine. It’s pressure-treated to ward off rot and decay, holds a painted finish well, and works well in Hurlford’s rain-heavy weather.

Want a natural timber finish or need extra hardwearing performance? Hardwood is what you need, naturally more resistant to wear, and it accepts stains and oils beautifully.

Not sure which timber to go for? We advise on the right timber for each job based on the property, the exposure level, and the finish you have in mind.

Timber windows FAQ

What types of timber windows do you produce?

Sash and case is the traditional Hurlford window, moving vertically in a box frame, that’s one type. Casement windows are hinged and swing out, that’s the other. Both come in treated pine or hardwood. And we build fixed window panels too, for any opening configuration.

Timber windows vs UPVC, which is better?

For performance, lifespan, and appearance? Yes, timber is the better choice. It insulates better at the comparable frame width, lasts significantly longer when maintained, and can be fixed rather than fully replaced. It’s also the only material accepted for listed buildings and is greatly favoured in conservation areas.

Can existing timber windows be converted to double glazing?

In many cases, yes. Sound current frames? We switch the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. Original frames are preserved, thermal and acoustic results gets better.
