Timber Windows Holytown

Holytown has its own timber window makers and we’re called Woodfellas. We build, restore, and install wooden windows from our premises, covering homes and commercial properties throughout Central Scotland.

Every window is custom-built. Responsibly sourced treated pine or hardwood. Double glazing and improved security as standard.

Sash and case for a tenement, casements for a newer extension, or a full set of new windows for whatever type of property you’ve got, we make them all in-house and fit ourselves.

What wooden windows we offer

Two types of timber window. Each designed for different properties and specifications. Both made in treated pine or hardwood. Both including double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash windows

The traditional window design for Scottish properties.

You know what makes sash windows clever? They slide up and down in a timber box frame using cords and counterbalance weights. They’re the original window on most of Holytown’s period tenements, and the only accepted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.

Whether your sash windows need refurbishing, repairing, or replacing altogether, we produce custom ones that replicate the existing profiles and proportions, while still delivering modern thermal and acoustic standards.

Restoration usually covers draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, and it’s the best call where the existing frames are in good condition. We complete full surveys before recommending any replacement.

Outward-opening casement windows

Hinged. Open out to open. Larger opening, easier cleaning from inside. Standard on Holytown properties built from the 1920s on, including extensions, dormers, and newer builds.

Side hung. Top hung. Fixed. We make custom timber casement windows in all three. Every one built to order. Double glazed as standard.

Wood windows, why they’re the best choice

Timber’s centuries-long position as the preferred window material is not just a matter of tradition. It actually outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that matter most to homeowners.

Natural insulation

Timber transfers heat far less easily than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at the same frame thicknesses. This means stronger thermal performance from the frame itself, before the double glazing is even considered.

In Scotland, energy costs are a real issue. The thermal qualities of a timber frame make a tangible impact to those costs, and it’s worth bearing in mind.

Fix it, don’t replace it

Timber window takes a knock? Good news: you can sort it.

Rot in a sill? Remove it and splice in new timber. Damaged part of frame? Rebuild. UPVC can’t do any of that. When it goes, the entire unit ends up in landfill and you’re starting from scratch.

Over the working life of a property, the capacity to look after timber windows rather than carrying out full replacement represents significant savings in both cost and waste.

Sustainability

All timber that goes into our windows is sourced from responsibly managed forests.

Timber is a natural material, it stores carbon as it stands and decomposes naturally when it’s done. UPVC is plastic based on oil, and aluminium production takes a significant amount of energy.

For people for whom the carbon impact of their home is a priority, timber represents the clear option.

Aesthetics and value

Weight. Depth. Grain. No artificial alternative can copy it.

On a traditional sandstone tenement, a blonde stone villa, or a period Scottish cottage, timber windows just fit in a way that UPVC just can’t pull off.

And they add genuine value to a property too, especially period properties where period features are part of the attraction.

Timber windows with double glazing

Every window we produce, sash or casement, comes with double-glazed sealed units fitted. No extras needed.

Two sheets of glass. A sealed cavity between them. The sealed unit is housed inside the timber frame and handles the rest, reducing heat transfer, boosting sound insulation.

Combined with the inherent thermal characteristics of the timber frame, a double-glazed timber window gives you strong thermal and acoustic results across both sash and casement types.

Need a traditional divided-light look? We install glazing bars.

The frames are in good shape, they’re just single glazed. In many cases, we can upgrade to double glazing as part of a restoration programme, keeping what’s worth keeping, boosting thermal performance, no full replacement required.

This is a regular project on Holytown’s older properties. The original sash windows are well-constructed, but the single glazing lets in cold air and street noise, and upgrading to double glazing solves both.

Every unit we install satisfies current building regulations for thermal performance. Always.

Timber windows for conservation areas

There are over 600 conservation areas in Scotland, quite a total.

Where a property is located in one of these areas, UPVC is not an acceptable window material, and the local council authority will often require replacements to replicate the original window in material, design, and profile.

We’ve been producing timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties throughout Scotland for over 20 years. We understand what the council requires, so you don’t have to work it out yourself.

We walk you through consent conditions. We produce windows that meet planning condition. Modern standards included. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more detail.

Wood types we work with

Two timber types, and that’s what we stock across the entire window range.

Most people pick treated pine. It’s pressure-treated to resist rot and decay, accepts a paint finish really well, and handles Holytown’s rain-heavy weather with no issue.

Want a natural timber finish? Need extra durability? Hardwood. By nature more resistant to deterioration. Takes stains and oils beautifully.

Property. Exposure level. Finish. We help you choose the right timber for each project.

FAQ, timber windows

What kinds of timber windows do you make?

We make two main types: sash and case windows and casement windows, both made in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Holytown style, sliding up and down within a box frame. Casement windows are hinged and swing outward. We also build fixed window panels to match any window opening configuration.

Timber windows vs UPVC, which is better?

For performance, lifespan, and appearance? Yes, timber wins. It insulates more effectively at the same frame thickness, lasts considerably longer when maintained, and can be fixed not replaced. It’s also the sole material accepted for listed buildings and greatly favoured in conservation areas.

Can you replace single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?

In most cases, yes. If your current timber frames are in good condition, we can convert the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. The result is improved thermal and acoustic performance while preserving the existing frames and look.
