Our wooden window options

We produce two main types of timber window, each designed for different properties and requirements. Both are offered in treated pine or hardwood, and both include double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash windows

The traditional window type for Scottish properties.

You know what makes sash windows clever? They move vertically in a box frame using weighted cords and pulleys. They’re the original window on most of Hirst’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements, and the only permitted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.

We restore, sort, and make custom sash windows that match existing profiles and proportions while delivering modern thermal and acoustic results.

Here’s the thing: renovating your original frames with draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades is often the smartest move if the frames are still solid. We always do a full survey before recommending replacement.

Standard casement windows

Casement windows are the hinged type: they open out to open, which gives you a wider opening for fresh air and means you can reach them without trouble from inside. They’re all over Hirst properties dating from the 1920s on, and they’re the natural option for extensions, dormers, and new builds.

Side hung. Top hung. Fixed. We make custom timber casement windows in all three. Every one built to order. Fitted with double glazing as standard.

Why timber windows are the right choice

Timber windows have been around for hundreds of years, and there’s a reason they’ve stayed the go-to. It’s not just tradition, timber genuinely outperforms UPVC and aluminium in a number of areas that count to households.

Natural insulation

Timber transfers heat far less quickly than aluminium. Outperforms UPVC at comparable frame widths. Stronger thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before the double glazing even factors in.

In Scotland, where heating bills are a real challenge, the thermal properties of a timber frame make a tangible impact, and that matters over time.

Fix, don’t replace

Timber window damaged? You can repair it.

Rot in a sill? Remove it and fit new timber. Damaged part of frame? Rebuild. UPVC isn’t repairable. When it goes, the entire unit goes to landfill and you’re starting from scratch.

Over the lifetime of a property, the option to look after timber windows rather than replacing them means significant savings in both cost and waste.

Sustainability

Every length of timber we work with comes from responsibly managed woodland.

Locks in carbon as long as it stands, then biodegrades cleanly. No landfill, no toxic process. UPVC is plastic from oil, and aluminium manufacturing is highly energy-intensive. The difference doesn’t need explaining.

For people for whom the carbon impact of their house is a priority, timber is the obvious option.

Character and value

Timber windows have a weight, a depth, and a natural grain that no man-made material can match.

Traditional sandstone tenement. Light stone villa. Period Scottish cottage. Timber windows belong. UPVC just can’t.

And they contribute tangible value to a property too, especially period properties where original or sympathetic features are part of the attraction.

Double glazing in wooden windows

All windows produced by Woodfellas, whether sash or casement, feature double-glazed sealed units installed as standard.

The sealed unit is housed within the timber frame and uses two sheets of glass separated by a cavity. The result is less heat transfer and improved sound insulation.

When combined with the inherent insulating characteristics of the timber frame, a double-glazed timber window delivers strong thermal and acoustic performance across both sash and casement styles.

We can also install glazing bars if your property calls for a traditional divided-light appearance.

Where older timber windows remain in sound condition but single glazed, we can in many cases convert them to double glazing as part of a restoration, retaining the existing frames and boosting performance without necessitating a full replacement.

It’s a particularly common job on Hirst’s older properties, solid original sash windows, but single glazing that admits cold air and street noise. Readily fixed.

Every sealed unit we fit meets current building regulations governing thermal standards.

Conservation area timber windows

There are more than 600 conservation areas across Scotland, a significant number.

Conservation area, and your windows need attention? UPVC is not an approved material, your local council will likely require replacements that match the original in material, design, and profile. It’s a firm requirement.

Over 20 years manufacturing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland. We know what the council expects.

We can help with consent requirements and build windows that meet planning condition while delivering modern standards. If you want more on the regulations, our sash and case windows page covers them in full detail.

Types of timber we work with

Two timber types, and that’s what we use across the entire window product range.

Treated pine is what most people pick, pressure-treated to resist rot and decay, takes a paint finish well, and handles Hirst’s damp climate with no a problem.

If you prefer a natural timber look, or if you need something extra durable, hardwood is the one, it’s by nature more resistant to deterioration and it accepts stains and oils beautifully.

We recommend the right timber for each job, based on the property, its exposure level, and the finish you need. Just let us know and we’ll guide you.

FAQ, timber windows

What types of timber windows do you make?

We make both sash and case windows and casement windows, made in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case windows are the traditional Hirst design, working by sliding up and down within a timber box frame. Casement windows are hinged and open outward. We also build fixed window panels to suit any opening configuration.

Timber windows vs UPVC, which is better?

For results, lifespan, and appearance? Yes, timber wins. It insulates more effectively at the equivalent frame width, lasts a lot longer when maintained, and can be restored not fully replaced. It’s also the sole material accepted for listed buildings and strongly preferred in conservation areas.

Is it possible to upgrade single glazing in timber windows?

In many cases, yes. If your existing timber frames are in solid condition, we can switch the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. That retains the original frames and character while lifting thermal and acoustic performance.
