Timber Windows Helensburgh

Woodfellas. Helensburgh-based timber window makers. We manufacture, refurbish, and install timber windows from our Helensburgh premises, covering residential properties and business properties right across Central Scotland.

Every window is made to measure. Ethically sourced treated pine or hardwood. Double glazing and enhanced security as standard.

Whether you need sash and case windows for a Victorian tenement, casement windows for a newer extension, or a complete set of replacement windows for any sort of property, we make them ourselves and fit ourselves.

Our timber windows

We produce two main types of timber window, each suited to different properties and specifications. Whichever you pick, both are available in treated pine or hardwood and both include double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash window types

Scotland’s classic window type.

Sash windows slide vertically within a box frame, using a system of weighted cords and pulleys doing the work. They’re the original window type on most of Helensburgh’s period tenements, and the only accepted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.

The best sash windows look exactly like the original. We refurbish, repair, and make custom ones matching existing profiles and proportions, while achieving modern thermal and acoustic results where it counts.

A lot of the time, restoring the existing frames, draught-proofing and double glazing, is the better option if the frames themselves are still solid. We do a full inspection before suggesting full replacement.

Casement windows

Casement windows swing outward on hinges, bigger opening for airflow, easy cleaning from inside. You’ll spot them on Helensburgh properties built from the 1920s onwards, and on rear extensions, dormers, and newer builds.

We manufacture custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed configurations. Just like our sash windows, every casement is made to measure and fitted with double glazing as standard, no exceptions.

For more on options and options, our timber casement windows section has everything you need.

Why timber is the right choice for windows

Timber’s centuries-long position as the go-to window material is not just a matter of tradition. It actually outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that matter most to property owners.

How timber insulates naturally

Timber carries heat far less quickly than aluminium. Outperforms UPVC at comparable frame widths. Better thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before the double glazing even comes into it.

In Scotland, energy costs are a real challenge. The thermal characteristics of a timber frame make a genuine difference to what you spend on heating, and it’s worth knowing.

Repair, don’t replace

If a timber window is damaged, the good news is you can sort it.

Rot in a sill? Take it out, put in fresh timber. Damaged frame section? Rebuild it. UPVC isn’t repairable: it fails, it ends up in landfill, you start again.

Over the lifetime of a property, being able to repair and maintain timber windows rather than having to replace them saves real cost and reduces waste.

Timber sustainability

All timber used in our windows is obtained from sustainably managed forest.

Stores carbon as long as it stands, then breaks down naturally. No landfill, no harmful process. UPVC is plastic from oil, and aluminium production is highly energy-intensive. The difference is clear.

If the environmental footprint of your property matters to you, timber is clearly the right choice. It’s straightforward.

Timber windows, character and value

Timber windows possess a substance, physical depth, and texture that no artificial material can match.

On a sandstone tenement, a pale stone villa, or a traditional Scottish cottage, timber windows just fit in a way that UPVC just can’t pull off.

Value, too. On older properties, where original or sympathetic features are part of the appeal, timber windows bring real worth that UPVC never quite does.

Double glazed timber windows

Every window we produce, sash or casement, comes with double-glazed sealed units as standard. No add-ons required.

The sealed unit sits inside the timber frame: it’s two panes of glass with a sealed cavity between them, which limits heat transfer and improves sound insulation.

The timber frame’s natural insulating properties combined with the double-glazed sealed unit give you excellent thermal and acoustic results across both window styles. That’s what you get as standard.

Traditional divided-light appearance? We can install glazing bars, a straightforward addition that makes a big visual difference.

Still in good shape but single glazed? We can often convert to double glazing as part of a restoration programme, keeping the original frames, boosting thermal performance, and skipping a full replacement.

This is a frequent job on Helensburgh’s older properties. The original sash windows are well-constructed, but the single glazing admits cold air and ambient noise, and upgrading to double glazing solves both.

Every unit we install: satisfies current building regulations for thermal standards.

Timber windows and conservation areas

Scotland has over 600 officially recognised conservation areas, and if you’re in one, it matters.

If your property is in one of these areas, UPVC isn’t an acceptable window material, and your local council might well require replacements that match the original in material, design, and profile.

We’ve been producing timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties throughout Scotland for over 20 years. We know what the council expects, so you don’t have to work it out yourself.

We walk you through consent conditions. We produce windows that tick every planning condition. Modern standards guaranteed. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more detail.

Timber types

Across all our window products, we use two types of timber.

Treated pine: most popular choice. Pressure-treated against rot and decay. Holds paint well. Works reliably in Helensburgh’s damp climate.

For properties where a natural timber look is wanted, or where extra strength is required, we stock hardwood, which is by nature more immune to damage and accepts stains and oils beautifully.

Not sure which timber to go for? We advise on the right option for each job based on the property, the exposure, and the finish you have in mind.

Timber windows, your questions answered

What kinds of timber windows do you offer?

We build sash and case windows and casement windows, both available in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Helensburgh style, moving vertically within a timber box frame. Casement windows hinge and swing outward. We also produce fixed window panels for any window opening setup.

Timber windows vs UPVC, which is better?

For results, longevity, and appearance? Yes, timber wins. It insulates more effectively at the equivalent frame width, lasts a lot longer when maintained, and can be repaired not replaced. It’s also the sole material permitted for listed buildings and highly preferred in conservation areas.

Can you replace single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?

In most cases, yes. If your existing timber frames are in good condition, we can convert the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. That preserves the original frames and look while lifting thermal and acoustic results.
