Timber Windows Harthill

Woodfellas are the timber window experts based in Harthill. We manufacture, renovate, and fit wooden windows from our Harthill premises, covering both residential properties and business properties right across Central Scotland.

Every window is made to measure. Ethically sourced treated pine or hardwood. Double glazing and improved security as standard.

Tenement, extension, any property. Sash and case, casement, or a complete replacement set: we make in-house and install ourselves.

Our timber window range

We make two primary types of timber window, each designed for different properties and specifications. Whichever you pick, both are made in treated pine or hardwood and both include double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash windows

Scotland’s traditional window design.

Sash windows slide vertically within a timber box frame, using a system of cords and counterbalance weights doing the work. They’re the historic window type on most of Harthill’s period tenements, and the required replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.

We restore, sort, and build custom sash windows that match the original profiles and proportions while achieving modern thermal and acoustic results.

Restoration often includes draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, and it’s the best option where the existing frames are in good condition. We do full surveys before recommending replacement.

Casement windows

The hinged window. Opens out, lets in more ventilation, easy to clean from inside with no fuss. Casement windows became the norm on Harthill properties from the 1920s on, including rear extensions, dormers, and newer builds.

We build custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed setups, so whatever configuration you need, we can deliver it. And like our sash windows, every casement is built to your size and double glazed as standard.

Why timber windows are the right call

Timber’s historic position as the first-choice window material is not simply a matter of tradition. It truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that make a difference to property owners.

Natural insulation

Did you know timber carries heat far less readily than aluminium, and it outperforms UPVC at the comparable frame thickness? That means stronger thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before you even factor in the double glazing.

In Scotland, where heating bills are a real issue, the thermal qualities of a timber frame make a measurable effect, and that adds up over time.

Repair, not replace

Damage happens. With timber, that’s not the end of the story. You can sort it.

Rot in a sill can be removed and new timber spliced in. A damaged part of frame can be replaced in section. UPVC isn’t repairable in the same way. When it fails, the entire unit goes to landfill and you start again.

Think about it: over the life of a property, being able to repair and maintain timber windows rather than replacing them cuts serious cost and cuts a lot of material waste.

Sustainability

We source all our timber from ethically managed forest, so you can be sure it’s ethically produced.

Timber is a natural resource that sequesters carbon throughout its working life and biodegrades naturally at end of life. UPVC is a plastic derived from oil, and aluminium production is highly energy-intensive, worth knowing if the environment matters to you.

Care about your home’s environmental impact? Timber. Obvious option.

Character and value

The weight, character, and natural grain of timber windows is something no artificial alternative can copy.

On a sandstone tenement, a light stone villa, or a period Scottish cottage, timber windows produce an aesthetic rightness that UPVC consistently fails to replicate.

And they bring genuine value to a property too, especially older properties where original or sympathetic features are part of the appeal.

Timber windows with double glazing

Whether sash or casement, all the windows we make include double-glazed sealed units as standard. It’s always fitted.

Sealed unit in the frame. Two panes of glass. Cavity between them. Cuts heat transfer. Improves sound insulation.

When combined with the natural insulating properties of the timber frame, a double-glazed timber window achieves excellent thermal and acoustic results across both sash and casement styles.

We can also fit glazing bars if your property requires a traditional divided-light look.

Where older timber windows are structurally sound but only single glazed, we can in many cases switch them to double glazing as part of a restoration, keeping the existing frames and boosting performance without necessitating a full replacement.

Regular request on Harthill’s older properties. Existing sash windows: well-constructed. Single glazing: allows in cold air and road noise.

And every unit we fit complies with current building regulations for thermal standards, so you’re covered.

Conservation area timber windows

Scotland has more than 600 officially recognised conservation areas, and if you’re in one, it matters.

If your property is in one of these areas, it’s worth understanding that UPVC is not an permitted window material. Your local council may require replacements that match the original in material, design, and profile.

We’ve been manufacturing timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties across Scotland for over 20 years. We understand what the council expects, so you don’t have to figure it out yourself.

We can advise on consent conditions and make windows that satisfy every planning condition while achieving modern performance. Our sash and case windows page covers the relevant regulations in greater detail.

Timber types

Two timber types, and that’s what we use across the entire window product range.

Treated pine is what most people pick, pressure-treated to ward off rot and decay, accepts a painted finish well, and handles Harthill’s rain-heavy climate with no a problem.

Want a natural timber look or need extra strength? Hardwood is the answer, by nature more resistant to deterioration, and it accepts stains and oils beautifully.

We’ll recommend which timber is right for your job based on the property, the exposure, and what look you’re after.

Timber windows, your questions answered

What types of timber windows do you make?

We make two main types: sash and case windows and casement windows, both offered in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Harthill style, sliding vertically within a timber box frame. Casement windows are hinged and open out. We also make fixed window panels to match any opening setup.

Are timber windows worth it over UPVC?

Three things: performance, longevity, appearance. Timber wins on all three. Better insulation at the comparable frame width. Considerably longer lifespan when maintained. Fixable, not replaced. And it’s the sole material accepted for listed buildings, greatly preferred in conservation areas too.

Is it possible to replace single glazing in timber windows?

In most cases, yes. Sound current frames? We convert the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. Original frames stay, thermal and acoustic performance gets better.
